But a new study published in the British Journal of Clinical Pharmacology has given a stern warning about the use of statins.

Apparently, statins users were found to be 38% more likely to develop a specific, extremely dangerous disease; one that can actually cause a stroke and heart attacks (which statins are supposed to prevent.)

The researchers collected the medical information of 9,535 people who participated in the Rotterdam Study between 1997 and 2012.

The participants had an average age of 64.3, and some of them were on statins at the beginning of the study or started to use it at a later stage.

During the 15 years for which they were observed, it was clear that statin users had a 38 percent greater chance of causing the development of type-2 diabetes than those who had never taken statins.

After noticing this finding, the scientists went further and investigated the specific metabolic characteristics of their statin takers.

Compared with non-statin takers, they also had higher fasting insulin levels and insulin resistance scores, meaning that even those who had not yet developed full-blown diabetes were at high risk of it.

Diabetics are at much higher risk of developing cardiovascular diseases (which is exactly what statins were supposed to protect you from). This may be one of the reasons why lowering cholesterol with statins has never been shown to reduce the risk of dying from a stroke or heart attack.

Scientists from King’s College London have just published a study in the Archives of Biochemistry and Biophysics that proves that a delicious type of berries is extremely good for cardiovascular health.

These berries clean your arteries and makes them more flexible, and can therefore lower blood pressure and counteract high cholesterol level.

You can buy these berries in all supermarkets and they are yummy.

Endothelial cells are the cells that line your blood and lymph vessels on the inside.

When they work well, your blood remains liquid and your blood vessels can contract and expand as necessary, to accommodate blood flow.

However, when they are dysfunctional, your blood has a higher chance of clotting and your blood pressure would more likely be high because your blood vessels are not as pliable as they should be.

Using ten healthy men between the ages of 18 and 35, the scientists gave the subjects drinks containing 200g, 400g, or no raspberries.

They then tested the subject’s blood pressure and the flow-mediated dilation (FMD) of their brachial artery.

FMD indicates how well an artery widens when the blood flow through it increases. It is an important measure of good heart health as arteries that can widen to accommodate the increased blood flow that keeps your blood pressure down.

The participants showed a clear increase in FMD, an effect that lasted for up to 24 hours after they drank the raspberry drink.

The researchers attributed the effect to a chemical called ellagitannins, a chemical that is native to raspberries.

The reason why they thought this chemical was involved was as they could see a corresponding increase in the urolithin metabolites in their subjects’ blood streams.

The bacteria in your intestines produce urolithin metabolites when they break down the ellagitannins in raspberries.

Given the size of the effect on FMD, they concluded that raspberries could reduce our risk of cardiovascular disease by 15%, especially if the effect can be sustained over time.

Other foods rich in ellagitannins include strawberries, pomegranates, and nuts.

The liquids they heat are typically made of nicotine, propylene glycol, glycerine, water, and a variety of flavorings.

The authors of the new study were interested in the effects of the heated flavorings on endothelial cells, which are the cells that line your blood vessels.

They tested nine of the most popular flavorings on both donated endothelial cells and on commercially available human aortic endothelial cells in the laboratory and found that all the flavorings had a tendency to harm these cells.

Mint, clove, vanilla, cinnamon, and burnt flavoring caused higher levels of an inflammatory marker, called interleukin-6 (IL-6), and lowered levels of nitric oxide. These two specific changes put us at great risk of heart attack and stroke.

Clove and vanilla increased oxidant stress in the cells.

All nine of these flavorings caused cell death when applied to the cells in high amounts.

Cinnamon, clove, strawberry, banana, and spicy cooling caused cell death, even in low amounts.

Strawberry caused cell death at very low levels.

So, even if e-cigarettes may (or may not) be better than tobacco, you would only be exchanging one bad habit for another.

Most people with sleep apnea go undiagnosed for a prolonged period of time… and sometimes they are never diagnosed. This is not good as it is a life-threatening disease in many different ways.

If you snore loudly, it’s very likely you suffer sleep apnea – even if you have never been diagnosed. In fact, most sleep experts treat snoring as a case of mild sleep apnea or undiagnosed sleep apnea.

The problem is that to diagnose sleep apnea properly, people have to spend a night in a sleep lab and would be plugged up several wires and tubes for the entire night. Not a very pleasant experience.

Until now that is! A new study has revealed a simpler way to diagnose sleep apnea 98% of the time. All it takes is a little device that you already carry with you everywhere.

A team of Thai scientists wondered whether it was possible to record sleeping sounds and diagnose snoring and sleep apnea severity from it.
They presented their study at the 2018 15th International Conference on Electrical Engineering/Electronics, Computer, Telecommunications and Information Technology (ECTI-CON).

To do this, they first recruited 49 study subjects, and asked them to sleep in the laboratory for one night in order to undergo a multichannel polysomnography assessment.

This included an EEG of the subject’s brain activity, their heart rhythm, their muscle activity, their eye movements, their blood oxygen, their chest wall, upper abdominal wall movements, and so forth.

With their polysomnograms results in hand, the researchers categorized them into four groups: 24 people that suffered from severe sleep apnea, 10 people who had moderate apnea, seven with mild apnea, and eight snorers with no sleep apnea.

During the sleep study in the laboratory, the researchers also recorded their subject’s snoring sounds and identified 33 different common snoring sounds.

Through the use of statistical measures, they identified the 10 most common sounds and investigated the precision in which they could predict which group each subject belonged to.

They found that they could accurately separate sleep apnea patients from snorers with only one of the sounds.

They could also divide their subjects into the four groups with an accuracy of 87.8 percent, which may not be as high as a whole sleep study, but would be more than sufficient for a preliminary diagnosis.

So, the future of diagnosing sleep apnea is not far away from becoming a simple phone app that records your snoring to send over to the sleep doctor.

A new study published in the journal Pulse reveals the single biggest cause of snoring and sleep apnea.

Not only does this factor press on your throat and strangle you while you sleep, it also changes the shape of your breathing passages, causing those dreaded night terrors.

According to this review study, approximately 80% of people with sleep apnea were found to be overweight or obese.

This is no big surprise but how it causes it was shocking.

Tomographic scans revealed that obesity causes an increased in the amount of fat stored in your pharyngeal area – this is the part of your throat that is behind your mouth and above your esophagus. Your nasal passages also generally open here to facilitate smooth breathing.

If you are obese, then the fat deposits in this area block your airway and thereby narrow it.

This does not mean that you cannot breathe, but it means that breathing would be more labored and shallow.

But here is the shocking part…

When your body deposits fat in or around your airway, it actually changes the shape of your airway without necessarily narrowing it.

Millions of magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) scans have revealed that obese people who snore or suffer sleep apnea have airways that are oval, with long axes that stretch from the back to the front of their bodies.

If you’re overweight or obese and suffer from sleep apnea (or snore loudly), then it’s very important to lose weight to regain the natural shape of your breathing passages.

But there is another thing that’s even more important.

You need to strengthen the muscles around your breathing passages to support them, in order to keep them in healthy shape in both the day and night.


Treat Obstructive Sleep Apnea - Snoring Causes Alzheimer’s (new study)

New Mayo Clinic research has some terrifying results for those who snore.
It’s not been published yet, but it will be at the American Academy of Neurology’s 71st Annual Meeting in Philadelphia in the middle of the year.

We have, however, obtained their preliminary results regarding the connection between snoring and Alzheimer’s.

And it won’t be soon enough, because you absolutely must take action today!

The study first performed positron emission tomography brain scans on patients to discover whether there was a buildup of the protein tau in the entorhinal cortex.

Tau plaques are usually present in people with Alzheimer’s disease and the entorhinal cortex is one of the most likely parts of the brain that would collect it. This is the part of the brain responsible for different types of memories and the perception of space and time.

The researchers then asked their participant’s partners whether they had noticed breathing pauses during the night.

This is quite a good way to check for sleep apnea, as people with this breathing disorder would involuntarily take multiple breathing pauses per hour that are at least 10 seconds in length. Your bed partner is thus likely to have noticed these pauses over a few months.

When comparing the brains of those with and without sleep apnea, they found tau buildups in the entorhinal cortices of only the sleep apnea sufferers.

Even after they controlled for other factors that are known to affect the buildup of tau in the brain, such as educational factors, age, sex, history of cardiovascular diseases, and so forth, they still found that sleep apnea sufferers had 4.5 percent more tau than the non-sufferers.

Avoid ED Without Pills - Avoid ED by Learning This

This is one of the weirdest findings about ED that I have seen. Apparently, learning something is the biggest factor in helping to avoid ED without pills.

And we are not talking about learning a skill or a technique.

According to a new study from Wroclaw Medical University in Poland, in order to avoid ED, you should learn this “mental thing”.

The researchers recruited 808 male patients who had been diagnosed with ischemic heart disease (clogged arteries) and who were receiving treatment for it at five medical centers.

They completed the International Index of Erectile Function 5 questionnaire to assess their level of ED, a modified Framingham questionnaire that was used to ascertain their level of physical activity, and all their Socioeconomic, demographic, occupational, and lifestyle data were also collected with their medical documentation.

76 percent of participants experienced ED, a staggeringly high rate.

Not so surprising findings:

The occurrence of ED was more common in older men, in those with a lower physical exercise tolerance, in those who were physically inactive, in those with higher blood pressure in the left ventricle, in those with a weaker pumping from the left ventricle, in those who had smoked more at some stage of their lives, in those with diabetes, and in those with the most negative modifiable lifestyle factors.

Interesting findings:

Body mass index, waist circumference, and previous heart attack were all surprisingly irrelevant.

Surprising findings:

Regarding educational status, they divided the subjects into four groups, ranging from basic to vocational, secondary, and higher.

The better educated the subjects were, the less likely they were to have ED and the less severe their ED was if they had it.

So apparently, men could potentially avoid ED by getting a college degree.

But if you don’t have a college degree, getting one now is probably not going to heal your ED.

And the findings were, of course, not absolute, as can be seen by the many men with a college degree who still suffer from ED.


Avoid ED Without Pills - ED Caused By This “Healthy” Food Substitute

You’re aware that losing weight and other healthy lifestyles are important and will directly influence ED.

So, you make healthy food choices.

Makes sense, right?

But be aware—within this healthy food choice is a wolf in a sheep skin … that ruins your love life and may be the main cause of your ED.

Aspartame is one of the leading artificial sweeteners used in most diet or sugar-free foods and beverages.

Scientists recently completed an interesting study on the effects of aspartame, which they published in the International Journal of Impotence Research.

Their sperm moved less and were abnormal and misshapen. These rats also showed defects in the structure of their testes.

Previous studies have proven that aspartame lowers testosterone level and libido, which directly leads to ED.

Bottom line: stay away from diet sodas and other things including aspartame if you want to avoid ED without pills.


Avoid ED Without Pills - Gout and ED Connection (new study)

ED is of course exclusive to men. Gout is also more common among men than women.

But you’d think that’s where the comparison ends.

Not quite, because there is a sneaky connection between gout and ED. One that was not clear till researchers from Keele University, Staffordshire, England recently dug deep into the data.

They first used the Clinical Practice Research Datalink to identify 9,653 men who had been diagnosed with gout between 1998 and 2004.

For comparison’s sake, they then selected 38,212 men from the database who matched the gout cases in all medical details but the gout.

They observed all these cases for an average of 10 years to find out whether men with gout developed erectile dysfunction at higher levels than their healthy peers, and exactly when the ED was diagnosed.

It turned out that men with gout were 31 percent more likely to develop ED than the general men without gout, and that the ED in many of the cases was diagnosed in the year before the gout.

In the year before the gout diagnosis, men were 63 percent more likely than the goutless men to develop ED, 77 percent more likely in the first two years, and then dropped off to 16 percent after five years of gout diagnosis.

To the scientists, this suggested that elevated uric acid was responsible for the ED.
