Treat Inflammation of the Sinuses - Sinus Infections

Sinus infections are the ones that affect the cavities, called sinuses, in the bones near the nose. An inflammation of the sinuses causes a disease called sinusitis. The inflammation occurs due to the blockage of the sinuses which leads to the trapping of air and mucus in the sinuses.

The trappings and inflammation of the nasal membrane lining produces great physical discomfort and severe pain. This condition is referred to as a sinus attack. The cause for sinusitis may be an allergy or infection, either due to bacteria or fungi. Some diseases, like HIV, also cause sinusitis. People with abnormal mucus secretion are also prone to sinusitis.

Sinus attack can occur in different parts of the body, particularly the face. These include the frontal sinusitis which affects the area over the eyes, maxillary sinusitis which affects the area inside the cheekbones, ethmoid sinusitis which affects the area between the eyes and the nose, and sphenoid sinusitis which effects the area behind the upper region of the nose and behind the eyes. The sinusitis causes pain in the area affected.

Sinus infections can be classified on the basis of the time for which they last. For instance, an acute infection lasts for upto three weeks, whereas a chronic infection lasts between three weeks to eight weeks or even more. Recurring sinusitis occurs frequently over a period of time.

The most common symptoms of a sinus infection include severe headache, pain in the jaws, pressure around eyes and nose and a thick discharge from the nose. Sometimes these are accompanied by fever, weakness and cough and cold.

Common treatments for sinus infections include the use of decongestants, antibiotics, nasal sprays and pain killers. Home remedies for treating sinusitis vary from inhaling steam, intaking warm fluids, applying a paste of cinnamon with water, to having jalapeño peppers and ripe grapes' juice.

The treatment must always be decided after a prescription from the doctor, that too after an analysis of the cause and nature of sinus infections. However, in absence of any effective relief from the aforementioned treatments, a surgery can also be resorted to. This surgery aims at widening the sinus openings so as to clear the blockages.

Treat Inflammation of the Sinuses - How to Avoid Sinus Infections

Sinus is one of the most common ailments gripping a large number of people. It can be infectious as well as non-infectious. Antibiotics are used to kill the sinus bacteria. Decongestants also help in relieving the pain. But as they say, 'prevention is better than cure'. So, how to avoid the sinus infections?

Sinus infection can be avoided by preventing excessive secretion of mucus. Before discussing how to avoid the sinus infection, let's briefly describe what exactly is the sinus infection and what are its symptoms.

Sinusitis is caused by the inflammation of the nasal membrane due to pollutants. This slows down the work of cilia which is responsible for evacuation of mucus from the nasal membrane. The inflammation results in trapping of mucus in the membrane leading to the sinus infection.

Weakness, exhaustion, recurrent cold or flu, a pain in the upper jaw, feeling of a pressure around eyes, forehead and cheeks, small amounts of mucus going down the throat are all common symptoms of sinusitis.

Keeping the body hydrated is one of the best methods of avoiding sinus infections. Drink hot soups, teas and other hot liquids. This helps in removing the mucus from the sinuses by improving the cilia movements. While on the move, remember to keep ourself hydrated. Avoid the use of air conditioners as the dry up the air.

Placing warm and moist towels or cloth on the face and the forehead for a duration of 4-5 minutes twice or thrice a day aids cilia movement and eases mucus circulation. A salt and water solution can also help in avoiding sinus infections. This solution needs to be sniffed in and out of the nose so as to clean the nose cavities.

A Hydro Pulse Nasal device or a sinus irrigator are modern devices that help in right and painless irrigation of sinuses. These are easily available with the pharmacies in the market. The pulse of water is gentle. The devices are simple and easy to use.

Thus, how to avoid sinus infections has a simple answer to it - by observing a few precautions! However, if the symptoms occur, it is advisable to always consult a specialist.

Treat Inflammation of the Sinuses - Home Remedies for Sinus Infection

One of the most common infections, the world over, is sinus. The bones near the nose contain cavities, also known as sinuses. An infection in the sinuses causes a sinus attack. The sinus swells due to such infections leading to headache, fever, difficulty in breathing and other discomforts. This physical condition is known as the sinusitis. Though there are surgeries for sinusitis, home remedies for sinus infection are a better option.

But what exactly is sinus? There is an opening in each of the sinuses or cavities for a free exchange of mucus and air. A mucus membrane lining connects one sinus to the other. Some infections and diseases, like asthma, cause inflammation of the membrane lining as well as the sinus. This blocks the mucus and air inside the lining and creates a vacuum. Due to this pressure on the sinus walls, a severe pain is caused.

By treating symptoms like headache, severe pain and nasal blockages, comfort can be achieved. But acute sinusitis demands a prolonged treatment.

In addition to antibiotics and sinus therapies, home remedies for sinus infections can prove to be quite effective. Taking in steam from a vaporizer or a container of hot water can provide immediate relief by decongesting the blockage. A hot or cold compress, i.e an absorbent pad pressed on to a part of the body to relieve inflammation, over the inflamed problem area is also effective in reducing the pain, and, thus, is one of the best home remedies for sinus infections.

A paste of cinnamon and water, or ginger with milk or water, or basil leaves mixed with cloves and dried ginger, when applied on the forehead provides instant relief. In addition to these, other home remedies like intake of ripe grape juice, having jalapeño peppers and warm tea, all have positive effects.

The steam of eucalyptus oil, when inhaled, is found to have healing effects for sinus infections. Above all, a great deal of rest coupled with a big amount of water and other fluids' intake are sure to provide relief from the excruciating pain.

However, as mentioned earlier, chronic infection needs prolonged treatment. Moreover, if the problem still persists even after the above-mentioned home remedies for sinus infection, it is advised to consult a doctor.
