This Commonplace Food Can Fight Diabetes

Scientists have known for some time that whole grains seem to prevent type 2 diabetes, but they don’t understand exactly why yet.

But a new study led by Finnish researchers published in the American Journal of Clinical Nutrition adds more to this debate by looking at the effects of whole grains on consumers.

Researchers asked 15 volunteers to eat whole grain rye bread or wheat bread supplemented with rye fiber for four weeks. Next, they had to eat low-fiber wheat bread for four weeks.

This involved adding 6 to 10 slices of bread to their diet each day but still carrying on with eating their regular foods.

Testing at the end of both periods revealed lower blood serotonin levels after the whole grain period than after the low fiber one.

But just to be sure they weren’t missing anything, the authors tested this diet out on mice too. After nine weeks on rye or wheat bran, they got the same results. There was less blood serotonin after eating whole grains.

Now, in case you were wondering, this lower serotonin level is not going to make anyone depressed. It’s a neurotransmitter that explains why people taking ecstasy think they love everybody, and why SSRI antidepressants work so well.

In the brain it makes us happy, but in the gut, serotonin is produced when your body needs to clear everything out sharpish. These two do their jobs completely independently, and a drop in one doesn’t affect the other.

So, don’t worry about eating whole grains and getting depressed!
Now you can see that high fiber equals low serotonin, and you know previous studies have confirmed that low serotonin means lower blood glucose, you’ll see that it does indeed reduce the risk of type 2 diabetes.

Whole grains are cheap and plentiful, so that means you can afford to stack your diet with grains like brown rice, buckwheat, corn, millet, tiff, and any bread that labels itself as 100% whole grain. Do this and you’ll definitely be keeping your colon happy, as well as the rest of you!

Fight Diabetes - One Oil Beats Diabetes, Blood Pressure and Cholesterol

Type 2 diabetics are sometimes recommended to go on a low-fat diet.
But new Spanish research, published in the journal PLOS ONE reveals one oil you should load up on if you type 2 diabetes, high blood pressure, or high cholesterol.

It’s actually a well-recognized oil. But what’s new is how it so drastically improves your gut bacteria – even better than probiotics.

Researchers split their mice into three groups:

– one fed a standard diet,
– the second fed a high-fat diet with the fat mostly consisting of extra-virgin olive oil,
– and the third fed a high-fat diet with butter instead of olive oil.

After the feeding period, they collected feces from the mice to test for intestinal bacteria, and they also measured their blood pressure, cholesterol, body weight, blood glucose, and insulin levels, all characteristics of people with diabetes.

Regarding these metabolic markers, the mice on the standard and olive oil diets had approximately the same blood pressure, glucose, and insulin levels.

The total cholesterol of the olive oil group was higher than that of the standard diet group. This was, however, almost entirely due to a rise in HDL (healthy) cholesterol.

The butter group, on the other hand, experienced a large rise in body weight, blood pressure, and cholesterol and a moderate rise in the level of insulin in their blood, suggesting that they were slowly becoming resistant to insulin, a main characteristic of diabetes.

Even more interestingly…

The butter group had a lot more bacteria from the proteobacteria group in their intestines. This has previously been associated with inflammation. It is a normal part of our gut bacteria but is considered to be unhealthy when it occurs in large amounts.

There were other differences as well…

The butter group had the unhealthiest bacterial profile and the highest levels of bacteria previously found to be harmful or related to high cholesterol, blood pressure, and body weight.

Therefore, it seems like olive oil has some of its healthy effects through the ways it modifies our gut bacteria and, conversely, that other fats may be unhealthy because of the negative contributions they make to these bacteria.

Fight Diabetes - These Beans Reverse Diabetes and Drop Blood Pressure

A study recently published in the British Journal of Nutrition shows that specific types of beans can drastically improve type 2 diabetes and lower blood pressure.

They’re widely available everywhere either fresh, roasted or as a supplement. And if you want a milder version of them, you can actually drink them.

Green coffee beans are the seeds of coffea fruits that have not yet been roasted. They are higher in a chemical called chlorogenic acid than roasted seeds, as the roasting destroys some of this chemical.

Chlorogenic acid and the green coffee beans that contain it have become very trendy and are thought to have all kinds of health benefits.

This new study suggests that at least some of these benefits are real.

The Iranian researchers recruited 43 male and female volunteers from a diabetes clinic in Tehran. Their ages ranged from 18 to 70. They all had a body-mass index of more than 25 kg/m2.

Researchers split them into two groups:

– one group that received a fake treatment,
– and another group that received two capsules of 186 mg of green coffee bean extract every day for a period of eight weeks.

They asked both groups to eat mostly plant-based foods, and to leave their levels of physical activity unchanged.

When they compared the groups after the eight weeks, they found that the green coffee extract consumers had lower fasting blood glucose, more sensitive responses to insulin, and lower systolic blood pressure.
