Avoid High Cholesterol - The Cholesterol And Eggs Debate Concluded (winner declared)

Eggs are high in cholesterol, so for decades in order to avoid high cholesterol, doctors have warned you against them.

But eggs are also delicious, high in nutrition and very convenient, so you’d maybe want to eat more eggs than your doctor likes.

With this in mind, researchers from the University of Copenhagen headed out and declared exactly how many eggs you can eat to satisfy your taste buds, arteries and your doctor and at the same time to avoid high cholesterol.

The researchers analyzed the highest quality studies on this matter published in the past 10 years. Their conclusion was clear:

#1 - In healthy people, seven or more weekly eggs do not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease or type 2 diabetes.

#2 - In type 2 diabetics, a group that is especially at risk of cardiovascular disease, seven or more weekly eggs do not increase the risk of cardiovascular disease and do not worsen diabetes.

#3 - Dietary patterns, physical activity, and genetics have a far larger effect on cardiovascular disease risk than the number of eggs you consume.

Thus, so long as you exercise, eat your fruit and vegetables, and reduce your consumption of sugar and refined carbohydrates, you can eat anything between seven and 14 eggs per week.

In fact, the people with the highest risk of cardiovascular disease who ate the most eggs had lower cholesterol and plaque in their arteries than those who ate fewer eggs.

So how is this possible?

The fact is, our bodies create 85% of the cholesterol in our bloodstreams. And cholesterol in food doesn’t directly transfer into your bloodstream.
It’s not high cholesterol, not even high LDL (bad) cholesterol, that builds up as a plaque in your heart causing stroke and heart attack.

This Food Can Drop Cholesterol and Replace Statin Cholesterol Drugs

Statins which are commonly prescribed to drop cholesterol have serious, potentially deadly side effects.

But a new study now shows that one type of statin can be naturally obtained from your food… without side effects!

In a new study from Sriwijaya University in Indonesia, this food was found to drop cholesterol by a whopping 60%.

Lovastatin is a statin that can cause abdominal pain, nausea, constipation or diarrhea, muscle pain and weakness, and so forth.

But lovastatin also reduces the amount of an enzyme called HMG-CoA reductase in your body. HMG-CoA reductase plays a big part in your body’s manufacturing of cholesterol, so reducing it prevents your body from making too much cholesterol.

Lovastatin also occurs naturally in some food types in smaller amounts, so the researchers wondered whether this natural form of it could do the same physiological job.

The Indonesian scientists identified fermented fish as a food type that contains lovastatin.

In Indonesia, carp fish fermented by the bacterium lactobacillus acidophilus is a popular fish paste called bekasam, so they started there.

They made their own bekasam by gutting and washing carp fish and then leaving it in a culture of lactobacillus acidophilus for 30 minutes.

They then removed it from the bacteria, mixed it with salt and rice, and left it to ferment for seven days.

They then applied the paste to HMG-CoA reductase enzymes in the laboratory and discovered that it could reduce the presence of this enzyme by an amazing 60%.

Unfortunately, the bacterium lactobacillus acidophilus is not freely available in shops, so you will have to make your fish without it.

Sauerkraut contains plenty of bacteria from the lactobacillus family, so you can add small pieces of carp or mackerel to the leftover liquid in a sauerkraut jar, add your favorite herbs and spices, and leave it in the fridge for a few days.

If this sounds too unappetizing, a fermented Chinese tea called pu-erh, oyster mushrooms, or red yeast rice (another Chinese delicacy) also contain lovastatin.

Why Dog Owners Have Lower Blood Pressure and Cholesterol Level?

Swedish scientists have just published a study in Scientific Reports that shows that dog owners have a lower risk of cardiovascular disease and overall risk of death than those who don’t have dogs.

In Sweden, it is compulsory to register yourself as a dog owner, and you also get a registration number when you visit a hospital.

With all this information easily available, researchers compared the hospital records of dog owners and non-owners over 12 years to see who was more likely to be hospitalized and die.

Those who owned dogs originally bred for hunting, like retrievers and terriers, had the lowest risk of both heart disease and death.

This indicates that owning a dog that needs a lot of exercise motivates you to go out for a long walk every day, which is one of the best things you can do for your heart in helping to lower blood pressure and cholesterol.

However, this is not the only reason dogs are heart healthy.

Companionship has long been linked with good health. And what better companion than a loving dog?

Older studies, like one from the American Heart Association published in a 2013 edition of the Journal Circulation, reveals that dog owners get more exercise, have lower cholesterol, have lower blood pressure, respond to stress in a way that does not elevate their blood pressure, and have a better chance to survive after an acute heart event.

Now having a dog is not for everyone and even if you do, it may not be enough to lower blood pressure and cholesterol to a healthy level.

The Myth of High Good Cholesterol Explained

You’ve heard it a million times: to prevent heart attack and stroke you need to lower bad cholesterol (LDL) and achieve high good cholesterol (HDL).

But scientists from Oxford University, Peking University, and the Chinese Academy of Medical Sciences have just published a study in the journal JAMA Cardiology that proves that it is nowhere near as simple as this.

In fact, LDL and HDL may have nothing to do with stroke and heart attack. And now there is an explanation.

LDL cholesterol is usually called bad cholesterol, as it builds up in our blood stream and artery walls.

HDL cholesterol, on the other hand, is thought of as good cholesterol, because it removes the LDL cholesterol from our blood stream.

So, decrease LDL and increase HDL – as the mantra goes.

The billion-dollar medical companies go with their trillion-dollar cholesterol drugs to help people to have high good cholesterol (HDL).

How do these drugs boost HDL? They block a production of the cholesterol ester transfer protein (or CETP).

Blocking this protein will result in high good cholesterol (HDL), so it should accordingly reduce our risk of coronary artery disease … right?

Interestingly, there is a genetic variant in some people that blocks the actions of this protein naturally and thereby serves as a genetic HDL elevator.

Researchers analysed the CETP-related genetic variants of 151,217 Chinese adults.

They expected that, the more of these genetic variants a person had, the higher his or her HDL cholesterol would be, and the lower the chance of developing coronary artery disease would be.

They followed their participants for 10 years to see which of them developed coronary artery disease and strokes.

Those with the most CETP-related genetic variants did have the highest HDL cholesterol, but contrary to expectations, they did not have a lower risk of clogged arteries, heart attack and strokes.

What’s the explanation?

The fact is that the amount of LDL or HDL cholesterol in your blood stream has nothing to do with the cholesterol build-up in your arteries.

This One Food Can Increase Bad Cholesterol (and ruin your health)

According to a new study from University of London, one type of food can singlehandedly run increase bad cholesterol level through the roof.

And this is exactly the type of food that’s becoming more and more popular.

In fact, you should avoid eating this type of food more than once per week.

By now we all know that takeaway meals increase our cholesterol, but we often don’t realize just how harmful it can increase bad cholesterol.

Researchers did their study with young school kids, but this is unlikely to be terribly different for adults.

They analyzed information from 1,948 primary school kids from 85 schools London, Birmingham, and Leicester. They asked the kids about their consumption of takeout meals and about the food they consumed in the previous 24 hours.

In addition, the scientists tested their physical measurements and fasting blood samples.

26% of the kids reported hardly ever/never consuming takeaway meals, 46% ate such meals less than once a week, and 28% ate them once or more per week.

More frequent takeaway meal consumption was related to significantly higher total cholesterol, LDL cholesterol, and body fat content.

Those who ate more takeaways consumed more calories but less protein and vitamin C.

The takeaway of this study is simple: takeaways can increase bad cholesterol, cook more at home and do less takeaways.

What Can Terribly Happened If You Have High HDL Cholesterol?


Shocking results from a new study published in the journal Nature Communications reveals how high HDL cholesterol level (the “good” cholesterol) can cause partial or complete blindness.

Shocking results from a new study published in the journal Nature Communications reveals how high HDL cholesterol level (the “good” cholesterol) can cause partial or complete blindness.

This is especially alarming since you’ve been given advice for decades to raise it and millions of people are taking prescription drugs aimed at boosting high HDL cholesterol level.

The researchers were examining the consequences of high and low body mass index, waist to hip ratio, cholesterol, triglycerides (circulating fat), and blood pressure when they made this discovery.

They went about it in a particularly clever way by using genetic information to exclude the interference of environmental factors.

Think about it: if you want to find out whether high cholesterol causes cancer, you can analyze the information of thousands of people, find those with high cholesterol, and check whether they are more likely to have cancer than those with low cholesterol.

But there is a problem with this kind of study. People with high cholesterol may not only have high levels of cholesterol in common, but also particular eating habits and lack of exercise.

In this case, how can researchers tell whether the cancer is caused by high cholesterol or by poor diet or lack of exercise?

To get around this problem, scientists often use the genetic variant previously established to cause high cholesterol, rather than high cholesterol itself, to establish a link with cancer rates. Presumably, since people are born with a genetic variant, this excludes dieting, exercise, and other environmental factors from the equation.

That is what the researchers in the Nature Communications study did.
They took the genetic variants related to cholesterol, blood pressure, and the other conditions listed above from participants in two studies, overall, just over 160,000 people.

They then listed the diseases from which each of these people suffered, and compared the two lists with each other.

There were many unsurprising findings, such as that those prone to obesity were more likely to have type II diabetes and arthritis, and that those with high cholesterol were at risk of coronary artery disease.

But the interesting discovery was that, together with protecting against diabetes, hypertension, and cardiovascular disease, high HDL cholesterol (commonly called good cholesterol) increases our risk of developing age-related macular degeneration.

Macular degeneration is a more common cause of blindness than cataracts and glaucoma.

It happens when the cells that make up the middle part of your retina, called your macula, deteriorate and die. This causes the central part of your visual field to become blurry and later dark.

If these studies are right, it means that you should never try to increase your HDL levels artificially using medications.

The key is to create a balance between good (HDL) and bad (LDL) cholesterol, using simple lifestyle changes.
