It is my pleasure to introduce Jim Morris, a former vegan bodybuilding champion.

Update: Morris died on January 28, 2016 at the age of 80.

Jim was a soft-spoken, humble man who was a professional bodybuilder for over 30 years and competed against many of the greats, including Arnold Schwarzenegger. He said that his health greatly improved after he made the switch to a plant-based diet in 1985.

Q: Who was your hero as a child?

Al Jones was my hero.

My parents separated when I was a year old. Al was a co-worker at the laundry my mother worked at. He had a family of his own, but he would find time to spend with me. Al would help me with my scouting merit badge projects.

He took me to museums, car shows (Motorama), Coney Island, the Sportsmen’s Show, the circus, and Broadway theaters. During our time together, I learned a lot about life through his example.

[Interesting fact: From 1974 to 1988, Jim was Elton John’s personal bodyguard. In effect, Jim is a hero himself.]

Q: Do you meditate?

I meditate daily. It is part of my life, and I do it without planning, schedule, or limit. It happens on its own and is open-ended.

Q: What are your hobbies outside of fitness?

I spend most of my day in my yard. I enjoy moving stuff and being a part of the ongoing creative process in the yard.

Q: What words of wisdom would you tell your 13-year-old self?

Believe in yourself!

I didn’t start bodybuilding until I was 19 years old. Ever since the first day, the gym members started asking me questions about how I had built my body; I was hooked.

Q: What are some of your bodybuilding feats?

  • In 1972, I won Mr. USA.
  • In 1973, I won the AAU Mr. America competition.
  • In that same competition, I also won Most Muscular, Best Arms, and Best Chest subdivisions, along with setting records for Largest Winning Margin (30 points), Oldest Winner (37 years-old), and Only Openly Gay to win.
  • In 1974, I won Mr. International.
  • In 1978, I was inducted into the Physical Fitness Hall of Fame.
  • In 1996, I came out of retirement and won Mr. Olympia Masters Over 60.
  • In 2015, I was inducted into the Venice Muscle Beach Hall of Fame.

Q: Why did you initially become vegetarian?

In 1985, my partner Jim Brown and I bought a house and immediately found ourselves with three adopted dogs. I quickly learned of their personalities as sentient beings, and mainly watching them interact with Jim. I came to realize them as individuals and equal beings. From there, it was automatic for me.

In January of 1969, I went to Los Angeles to ask Bill Pearl’s advice about bodybuilding. I was so taken with him, I moved to Los Angeles to learn from him. Bill taught me the mechanics of training and training others. With Bill’s guidance, I was able to win the Mr. America.

I decided to become a vegetarian in 1985 at age 50. In 2000 at age 65, I became a vegan.

(Pearl became a vegetarian at age 39 and is the most well-known vegetarian bodybuilder next to Jim)

Q: In what ways has your health improved?

During the first 15 years [of being plant-based], my overall system became more unified and strong. Since becoming vegan:

  • I no longer have any joint pain or stiffness.
  • I no longer have any allergy symptoms.
  • I no longer wear eyeglasses.
  • All of my digestive problems have cleared up.

Q: Tips on bulking up?

To bulk up, I increase the weight/poundage I am training with, which stimulates my system to eat more food, and then I eat whatever my appetite indicates.

Q: Supplements or hormone therapy (as your age would require)?

  • Take 200 mg of testosterone weekly.
  • Four teaspoons of hemp seeds daily.
  • One aloe vera leaf daily.

Q: If you have to pick only three exercises, what would they be?

Q: How has your training regimen changed over the years?

I think what you’re asking is: “How have you dealt with the advancing age in your training?” (Expecting some sort of compromised intensity.)

My training regimen and my life are one and the same.

All of the components of my life – goals, nutrition, and activities – are the same as those of my training regimen.

I do not think of them as different.

As I learn and incorporate that knowledge into my life, it becomes part of my always-changing training regimen.

Depending on my circumstance at the moment, I will workout differently in the gym.

So the changes in my regimen are constant, as they always have been and always will be.

The last time “I got into shape” was to do the PETA poster of the Rodin “Thinker” sculpture two years ago [photo on the right].

That followed the 75th commemorative photo session two years earlier, so I was in pretty decent shape to begin with. So starting from that point was easy.

Q: What unique tips can you share that have led to your success in bodybuilding all these years? Why do you think you have been able to train well into your 70s?

I have accepted responsibility for my life. Which includes conscious responsibility for the condition of my body.

I have always kept my midsection in shape. No matter what condition of the rest of my body, fat or skinny, whatever. My waist has always been my priority.

It has kept me from wasting time with processed and non-nutritious food. Keeping my waist tight has enabled me to keep my posture, which keeps excess strain off my joints and muscles.

Q: What future trends do you anticipate in health and fitness?

Veganism will be the next “organic.”

I think “meals” as we know them [with multiple food groups] will become obsolete.

There will be mostly nutrient-specific meals which may consist of only one type of food. I think people will eat only when they are hungry, and then one item will be enough to satisfy them.

I think workouts and exercises will be more functional and geared toward enhancing our day-to-day movements and habits.

Q: What advice do you have for someone who wants to try vegan bodybuilding?

Go for it.

The only difference is in the food. Everything else is the same. The workout, the exercises, the poundages, and the rest periods – everything except the food.

And while you are at it, eliminate processed and refined food as well.

What is the Best Way to Completely Cure Your Gout?

A new study published in the journal Cell Metabolism reveals that gout is much more dangerous than previously thought.

Millions of deaths blamed on type 2 diabetes, obesity and other conditions were actually caused by elevated uric acid – the underlying mechanism of gout.

And this may all be caused by one ingredient, almost all of us consume daily.

Uric acid is a chemical that is created when our bodies break down purines.

It is important to consume purines, as they help build cells. But, uric acid has the tendency to crystallize and cause kidney stones or gout.

To prove uric acid was the primary killer in fruit flies that consumed a lot of sugar researchers gave them a lot of water to drink.

This did not improve their obesity or metabolic problems; but it substantially reduced the amount of crystallized uric acid in their bodies.

Interestingly, even though they still had the same weight and metabolic conditions, they no longer died prematurely, showing that it is kidney stones from crystallized uric acid that were responsible for premature deaths.

But it’s not just kidney stones we need to worry about.

Researchers conducted a human study and compared high and low-sugar diets.

Those who consumed a lot of sugar had worse kidney function, more purine, and more crystallized uric acid in their bodies.

From this study, we can learn two things relevant to gout:

1. It does not matter how much purine-rich food you consume and how much you avoid – if you consume a lot of sugar, your gout will remain.

2. During celebrations when sweets are hard to avoid, drink more water than usual to prevent the uric acid from crystallizing.

It is obviously not advisable to consume as much sugar as you wish so long as you drink water, as you will be desperately unhealthy with diabetes, heart disease, and obesity. But as an occasional damage control strategy, water can be valuable.

Drinking more water and cutting down on sugar isn’t enough to completely cure your gout. To do this, you must tackle its true cause, which I’ll explain how to do here…

Completely Cure Your Gout - New Technology Diagnoses Gout Without Needles

The word “needle” conjures up negative images for many people, especially when it comes to medicine. It’s perhaps the most universally hated medical device in the world. After all, blood tests are painful and inflict unnecessary stress.

Gout sufferers would be all too familiar with needles and blood tests.

But the good news is that using needles isn’t the only way to diagnose the condition.

New research published in Nature Biotechnology shows that this torture isn’t necessary at all.

One of the biggest problems with sweat sensors is that they require too much sweat to test accurately. They cannot measure chemicals precisely in the tiny amounts of liquid we sweat out.

Secondly, those that are accurate are very expensive.

Scientists have worked out how to make cheaper sensors from graphene in which they use commonly available carbon dioxide lasers to engrave the tiny channels into which the fluids go.

Their sensors can measure respiratory and heart rates that can help diagnose heart disease and fitness-related conditions, blood uric acid for gout diagnosis, and blood tyrosine for liver disease and metabolic disease diagnosis.

They tested gout patients and people without gout to compare their readings. The sensor accurately measured the gout patient’s uric acid to be higher than that of the healthy volunteers.

To ensure that the sensors were right, the scientists drew blood from these subjects and compared their blood readings with their sweat sensor readings. The sensors showed the same readings as the blood tests.

They next tested the sweat of healthy gout-free volunteers while they were fasting and again after they ate a meal packed with purines, a chemical in food that our bodies break down to uric acid.

The sensor correctly measured the higher uric acid levels after the meals.

But you know you have gout, so the most important question is how can you completely cure your gout? This is actually easy to do if you turn the traditional gout treatments on their head. I’ll explain this here…

Completely Cure Your Gout - Gout Caused by This Fat, Not Uric Acid (study)

Gout is caused by a high uric acid level. Everyone knows that, right?

But according to a new study published in Clinical Rheumatology this is not the case.

It’s actually caused by a common type of fat.

Cut out this fat and literally watch your gout melt away.

Triglycerides are fats that appear in your blood and are usually tested alongside your cholesterol.

Free fatty acids are long chain acids that are attached to nothing else. In other words, they are free, and bound to nothing.

A triglyceride is an ester built up from glycerol and three fatty acids. In other words, three free fatty acids and glycerol bind together to form triglycerides.

When you eat, your body converts the calories that it doesn’t need immediately to triglycerides, which are then stored in your fat cells to provide you with energy later.

Triglycerides are normally thought of as the main constituent of body fat and, therefore, they are a very harmful substance.

But this new study now suggests that the free fatty acids, before linking with glycerol to form triglycerides, might be involved in gout attacks.

The scientists recruited 60 people with acute gout, 60 in gout remission, 60 with high uric acid that showed no symptoms, and 60 healthy controls.

They then drew and tested their subject’s blood for free fatty acids – triglycerides, cholesterol, and a variety of other health markers.

From the analysis, they drew two strong conclusions:

1. The free fatty acids in the blood of the acute gout patients was much higher than in that of the subjects in the other three groups.

2. The four groups did not differ on triglycerides and LDL cholesterol, even though triglycerides are considered to be harmful and LDL cholesterol is normally called bad cholesterol.

This means that doctors can use blood tests for free fatty acids to monitor your gout.

It also means that you should probably reduce the amount of fat in your diet if you have gout.

There’s an unprecedented amount of people taking statins and following dietary advice from the American Heart Association to cure their high cholesterol problems.

But, if they’re following such expert medical advice, why are high cholesterol and cardiovascular disease cases skyrocketing around the world?

A research group from Dublin put a revolutionary theory to a test in a study published in the journal Nutrition & Diabetes – if something isn’t working, do the exact opposite!

It was related to eating more of something that we’ve always been told was bad for us.

And, this so-called “bad” food does wonders for our cholesterol levels.

Most of us grew up with the advice that dairy is unhealthy and we should restrict our intake of milk, butter, cheese, cheese, and cream.

The good news is what you’ve been told isn’t entirely true.

Previously, we were told dairy products contain saturated fat, and saturated fat increases our levels of LDL (bad) cholesterol.

However, a recent study proved otherwise.

Researchers asked 1500 adults to keep food diaries for four days. They also collected their subject’s fasting blood samples and conducted various other tests.

Those who ate more dairy products had the lowest body mass indices, the lowest percentage of body fat, the smallest waist circumference, the smallest waist-to-hip ratio, and the lowest systolic and diastolic blood pressure, which are all signs of good health.

The subjects were split into three groups. They consumed:

1. Butter and cream;
2. Whole milk;
3. Reduced fat milks and yogurt.

If the traditional advice is correct, you would expect the last group to have yielded the healthiest results – however, they had higher total cholesterol and triglyceride (blood fat) levels than the other groups.

Those who drank the most milk, whole or low-fat, had lower circulating levels of some inflammatory markers than their peers, and also had higher insulin sensitivity.

A study that has just appeared in the British Journal of Dermatology has found that one popular cosmetic habit causes psoriasis.

This is quite alarming considering many dermatologists have previously promoted this habit to ease psoriasis symptoms.

The researchers analyzed information already collected by the Nurse’s Health Study II. In total, there were 80,923 participants, all of whom were women.

They were asked about their annual use of tanning beds in high school and college, between ages 25-35, and over the last two years.

For each of these periods, they were asked how often they used tanning beds from zero to more than 24 times per year.

32.4 percent admitted to having 1-2 tanning bed sessions per year, 13.38 percent reported 3-11 annual uses, and 1.7 percent reported more than 12 sessions.

While only 2.3 percent of women reported developing psoriasis, the risk was higher for women who tanned indoors than for women who did not. There was a:

1. 16 percent greater chance for women who tanned indoors once or twice a year.

2. 23 percent greater risk for women who tanned indoors 3-11 times per year.

3. 63 percent increased risk for women who tanned indoors 12 or more times per year.

This is quite alarming, as many dermatologists even prescribe tanning beds to relieve psoriasis symptoms.

But avoiding tanning beds does nothing to eliminate psoriasis symptoms permanently. Hundreds of people have however been able to completely eliminate their psoriasis using simple diet and lifestyle changes explained here…

Eliminate Psoriasis Symptoms Permanently - This ONE Ingredient Causes Psoriasis

The traditional medical system considers psoriasis untreatable.

But a new study published in the Journal of Investigative Dermatology proves not only that it’s preventable, but also curable.

And all you have to do is cut out this ONE (maybe two) ingredients.

Mice were fed a high-fat high-sugar diet that mimicked the typical Western diet. This was enough to cause easily observable skin inflammation within the first four weeks, even before the mice started putting on weight.

This implies that the skin damage that later becomes psoriasis is present because of the food, and not the extra weight.

They also put other groups of mice on different diets to compare them with the Western dieters.

• One group received a normal diet without excessive fat and sugar,
• Another group received a high-fat diet without excessive sugar.
• The third group received a high-fat, high sugar diet.

The high-fat high-sugar group was the only group that exhibited skin inflammation.

A Western Diet is made up of saturated fats and simple, rather than complex, carbs. It also contains little fiber.

The researchers even managed to find a mechanism that is likely responsible for this finding – bile acids.

When you eat fat, your liver produces bile acids that travel to your intestines and help to absorb the fat.

When the mice were given a drug that removed the bile acids from their intestines, their levels of skin inflammation were lower, proving these acids play a role in the production of skin inflammation as a result of a high-fat, high-sugar diet.

We cannot recommend these drugs of course, as they can cause stomach upset, pain, constipation or diarrhea, nausea, vomiting, loss of appetite, and low levels of vitamins B and K.

The easiest solution is simply to eat less fat and fewer simple carbohydrates. Also, it is recommended to follow an anti-inflammatory diet.

A healthier diet is all well and good, but to permanently cure psoriasis, you need a little bit more to eliminate psoriasis symptoms permanently, as I’ll explain here…

WebMD claims no one really knows what causes psoriasis – and there are some that actually believe this.

But to cure something, we need to know where it came from in the first place.

So naturally, we welcomed new research that was published in the Journal Of The American Academy Of Dermatology, which revealed a bad habit that increases the risk of psoriasis by a whopping 300%

And here’s the thing – it isn’t even your bad habit.

New warnings have been made regarding smoking while pregnant, as this can lead to psoriasis in children.

Researchers collected and analyzed data of 25,812 children from the Danish National Birth Cohort. This information spanned across different age groups – at gestational week 12, at six months, and at 11 years, which allowed researchers to compare the child’s development.

Children who were exposed to tobacco smoke during their prenatal months were 39 percent more likely than children of non-smoking mothers to develop psoriasis.

If the mothers-to-be smoked 16 or more cigarettes per day during their pregnancies, the kids were almost three times more likely to have psoriasis in their childhood.

The study also revealed that the kids whose mothers were on nicotine replacement products while expecting were also 36 percent more likely to have psoriasis than the kids whose pregnant mothers neither smoked nor utilized nicotine replacement therapy – therefore nicotine is the culprit.

This new information doesn’t really come as such a surprise since a large study in the American Journal of Epidemiology recently stated that smokers had almost twice the psoriasis risk than non-smokers.

In the study 264 people with high blood pressure with an average age of 57.5 were recruited. 39 of the participants had blood pressure above 160/100 mmHg.

The lifestyle intervention program consisted of weekly emails for four months, two emails per month for the next four, and one email per month for last four.

The emails contained links to videos recorded by former hypertensive patients in which they explained the lifestyle modifications that enabled them to lower their blood pressure, tools for tracking their diets and activity levels, and other educational materials.

The first program included clear interactive activities and concise information from people in real-life counselling settings. The second online program just included information that you could obtain from any good book.

The participant’s blood pressure from both groups was checked quarterly over a period of a year. Those that received the more personalized comprehensive treatment dropped their blood pressure by 10 mmHg. The other group only experienced a 6 mmHG drop.

In addition, they had lower arterial stiffness and higher circulating levels of nitric oxide.

A number of studies, including one published in the Turkish journal KBB-Forum: Elektronik Kulak Burun Boaz ve Ba Boyun Cerrahisi Dergisi, have found that snoring can actually drastically harm one of your senses.

We know that noise-induced hearing loss can result from loud music through earphones or in clubs and from prolonged exposure to machinery in factories.

But now, researchers claim snoring can also trigger hearing loss.

Researchers recruited 72 subjects, all of whom had been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

The loudness of sound is measured in decibels (DB). The scientists divided their subjects by the loudness of their snoring: above and below 65 dB.

They then tested these people’s hearing on different frequencies of tones and on speech recognition.

Loud snorers had much worse hearing than light snorers.

This was true for sounds in both their ears, for pure tones at various frequencies, and for speech recognition.

They were especially bad at hearing high frequency sounds at 4,000 and 8,000 hertz, which had to be turned up very high before they could hear them.

Unless it is caused by one big explosion, noise induced hearing loss is normally gradual and most people who suffer from it cannot detect its progress.

Because snoring continues for approximately 8 hours a day (or night) and it is a sound that is so close to you, it is no surprise that 65 dB is enough to gradually affect your hearing.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment –  Why Sleep Apnea Cures Don’t Work (and the solution)

It’s terrifying how few people actually benefit from traditional sleep apnea treatments, such as the CPAP mask.

But some do.

So, why does it work for some but not all?

Australian researchers recently found the answer to this question and published their findings in the journal Sleep.

And with those findings, we have a solution that could help everyone suffering from sleep apnea.

From previous research, the researchers identified a problem often overlooked: at least one-third of sleep apnea patients also suffers from insomnia. These people respond poorly to sleep apnea treatment, partly because sleep apnea is not their only problem and partly because they adhere very poorly to sleep apnea treatment programs, such as continuous positive airway pressure.

Another problem is that where doctors diagnose the problem correctly by identifying both insomnia and sleep apnea, they often prescribe sedatives to help the patient sleep better. But such drugs aggravate the sleep apnea, as they relax the airway muscles too much, leading them to collapse, which causes sleep apnea.

In response, the Australian research team decided to investigate whether people with this debilitating double whammy of insomnia and sleep apnea would respond better if insomnia were treated first with cognitive behavioral therapy before the sleep apnea was tackled with continuous positive airway pressure.

They recruited 145 patients with co-occurring insomnia and sleep apnea, often called COMISA.

They first divided them into two groups: one group that received four sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy followed by continuous positive airway pressure, and another group that received their treatments as usual followed by continuous positive airway pressure. Some of the usual treatments involved no treatment at all, and others involved drugs.

After these treatments, the researchers followed their study subjects for six months to see what would happen.

Firstly, they noticed an increase of 87 percent in acceptance of continuous positive airway pressure by the cognitive behavioral therapy group, leading to 61 minutes per night longer use of the airway pressure devices when compared to the treatment-as-usual group.

This lasted for four months.

After six months, combined cognitive behavioral therapy and continuous positive airway pressure had led to a 52 percent improvement in insomnia severity (compared to 35 percent in the other group).

It had also led to a 48 percent improvement in night time insomnia complaints, versus 34 percent in the other group, and a 30 percent improvement in negative sleep-related beliefs, compared to 10 percent in the other group.

If you suffer sleep apnea, you know how being tired during the day can put you and others in danger. You may also know that sleep apnea can cause stroke, heart attack and even dementia.

But a new study reveals more subtle consequences of sleep apnea. And one that’s more fatal than all the others put together.

Fortunately, it also reveals a possible cure for this horrendous disease.

Treatment-resistant depression and suicidal major depressive disorder are two of the worst conditions that you can possibly have, as anyone who has had them will tell you.

A study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research now offers sleep apnea as a possible cause for these conditions, and that link might lead to a solution.

The team behind the research didn’t set out to look at sleep apnea at all. They were interested in whether combining insomnia treatment with depression treatment could reduce suicidal thoughts. But, once research got underway, it struck them that a lot of their subjects with major depression also had sleep apnea.

So, they started a new study. They looked at major depressive disorder sufferers but excluded those who were at risk of sleep apnea, so think people on sleeping tablets, people with obesity and also restless leg syndrome.

But even after excluding people with these risk factors, they still found that 17 of the 125 subjects they tested either in the laboratory or at home had sleep apnea, which makes it 14 percent.

That’s nearly the same as the average occurrence of sleep apnea in the general population, even though the high-risk subjects had been excluded.

So, even though they excluded men who snored, were overweight and felt sleepy during the day, the percentage remained roughly the same. In other words, it was high.

This does not mean that depression causes sleep apnea, or that sleep apnea causes depression, but it does mean that the percentage of sleep apnea sufferers in a population of patients with major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts is much higher than you might expect.

It’s not known why this happens, but it could be that many cases of major depressive disorder, including treatment-resistant ones (which make up half of all cases), might respond to sleep apnea treatment.

The researchers point out that people with sleep apnea are quite likely to be depressed, too, so depression treatments are unlikely to work for them because their problem is to do with sleep. They don’t have a problem with the neurotransmitters that antidepressants aim to treat, and they don’t have the kind of psychological problem that therapy might be able to help.

This means that if there are lots of hidden cases of sleep apnea among major depressives with suicidal thoughts, it might be better to treat them for sleep apnea than for depression.
