If you snore (which is harmless enough), chances are high that you also have sleep apnea (which is a life-threatening disease).

But the only way to find out for sure is to undergo a complicated overnight diagnosis in a sleep lap.

Or so we thought until we learned the details of a new study by researchers from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute that was presented at a Transportation Research Board committee meeting in January 2021.

Researchers from the Virginia Tech Transportation Institute investigated more than 20,000 commercial motor vehicle drivers and found that previous studies may have grossly underestimated the occurrence of sleep apnea in this population.

Previous studies had found that anywhere from 7.2 to 30% of drivers suffer from this sleep breathing disorder, although some researchers think it could be as high as 49%.

Instead of sending these drivers to a sleep laboratory for a diagnosis, the researchers gave them an eight-item apnea screening tool to complete.

This tool included questions to assess their levels of snoring, tiredness, breathing pauses, high blood pressure, body mass index, neck circumference, sex, and age.

All these factors had previously been identified as strong predictors or indicators of sleep apnea. The researchers believed that this screening tool might help drivers know when to seek help.

After all, if someone says he is constantly tired during the day and he reports snoring so loudly that he wakes himself up during the night, that is a pretty good indication that his sleep breathing is not normal and that it causes daytime difficulties.

He then knows that he needs help and can have his condition officially tested in a sleep laboratory.

This screening tool is called the STOP-Bang method. Drivers reported that they would never have guessed that they had sleep apnea before they completed it.

This study is useful for two main reasons:

1. It suggests that more commercial motor vehicle drivers may have sleep apnea than previously thought.

2. It suggests that there can be simple and effective screening methods that anyone, from laypeople to doctors, can use to screen for sleep apnea before getting entangled in the expensive and complex process of a laboratory sleep test.

Thus, if you snore, are constantly tired, take breathing pauses while asleep, have high blood pressure, have a high body mass index, have a high neck circumference, are male, and are middle-aged or old, you are likely to have sleep apnea and should get an official sleep test.

The problems caused by sleep apnea are substantially more serious than just poor sleep and daytime sleepiness.

One of the most serious effects of sleep apnea is the onset of dementia, according to a study published in the latest Annals of the American Thoracic Society. It can happen at any age.

The good news is that you can cure sleep apnea and dementia using the same simple method.

A team led by scientists from the University of Calgary understood that sleep apnea could cause cardiovascular disease and that people with cardiovascular disease were more likely to develop dementia.

But they wanted to know whether mild cognitive impairment was also more common in people with sleep apnea, including those with or without cardiovascular disease.

If you have trouble recalling things from memory, have trouble concentrating on your work, struggle to make simple mathematical calculations in your head, or find that your reasoning and decision-making take longer than they used to, you probably have some level of mild cognitive impairment.

The Mayo Clinic describes this as the stage between normal cognitive decline (which occurs in most aging individuals) and the more serious condition of dementia.

For two reasons, it is important to identify the causes of mild cognitive impairment so that it can be addressed.

First, people need properly functioning thinking abilities to work productively.

Second, since elderly people with mild cognitive impairment are more likely to develop dementia, we need to prevent it where we can.

Thus, the Canadian researchers wanted to know whether sleep apnea is a causal factor behind mild cognitive impairment.

For this study, they enrolled 1,084 people who had been referred to three sleep centers with suspected sleep apnea.

They were first given either a home-based sleep apnea test or a full polysomnography (sleep test) in the laboratory.

The researchers then asked them to complete a collection of cognitive tests to measure their learning, coding, and memory: the Montreal Cognitive Assessment Test, the Rey Auditory Verbal Learning Test, and the WAIS-IV Digit-Symbol Coding subtest of information processing speed.

The scientists also collected their sleep and medical histories to exclude factors like cardiovascular disease that could potentially distort their findings.

Their most important finding was that people with moderate or severe sleep apnea were approximately 70% more likely to have mild cognitive impairment than people without this sleep breathing disorder.

Overall, 47.9% of all sleep apnea patients were cognitively impaired; this rose to 55.3% in those with moderate and severe sleep apnea.

This comes as no surprise, since we have long known that the primary underlying cause of all types of dementia is lack of oxygen to the brain. And sleep apnea robs you of oxygen, leading directly to dementia.

Most people who snore loudly have underlying sleep apnea—most often undiagnosed.

If you belong to this group, then you’re at a drastically higher risk of developing dementia, according to a new study published in the Journal of Alzheimer’s Disease.

The good news is that it’s very easy to eliminate snoring, sleep apnea, and dementia in one blow.

The team of Australian researchers knew that previous research had found a relationship between sleep apnea and dementia, with sleep apnea sufferers being more likely to develop dementia than people without sleep disorders.

But since very little research existed that actually examined the brains of sleep apnea sufferers to compare them with those of good sleepers, they decided to close this research gap.

As a target, they decided to focus on a protein called beta-amyloid that is often found in the blood vessels of the brains of people with dementia and Alzheimer’s disease.

They recruited 46 subjects—34 with untreated diagnosed sleep apnea and 12 who had no symptoms of sleep disorders. The former group had an average age of 57.5 and the latter of 58.5.

They were first given a polysomnogram, which is a sleep study that identifies sleep disorders. It measures indicators like breathing rate, blood oxygen levels, heart rate, eye movements, muscle activity, and brain waves.

They were then given a PET scan to measure the amyloid levels in their brains. The scientists also collected information regarding their demographic details and moods.

The subjects with sleep apnea turned out to have higher levels of the amyloid protein in their brains, which shows why they were more likely to develop Alzheimer’s.

Those with severe sleep apnea had higher amyloid burdens than those with mild sleep apnea, which explains why previous studies had found the dementia risk to be the greatest in people with a severe form of this condition.

Not only did people with sleep apnea have a higher amyloid burden, they also suffered from poorer sleep efficiency. In other words, they managed to get less good sleep during the same amount of time spent sleeping than their peers.

They also spent less time in sleep stage 3, which is the stage of deep sleep during which your body regenerates and repairs itself.

The new study’s authors decided to find out whether it had something to do with heart rate variability.

As you would expect, they recruited a group of subjects with sleep apnea and a group of healthy sleepers.

They measured their subjects’ heart rate variability in many different ways and found that those with sleep apnea were more likely to have low variability than those without sleep apnea.

The authors also warned that this disturbance in our hearts’ ability to change its rate appropriately can cause serious cardiovascular disease and even death.

In fact, the problem is bigger than just cardiovascular disease. Your autonomic nervous system is responsible for your heart rate variability, so it is a good test to see whether this part of your nervous system is functioning properly. If it is not, you may also develop respiratory problems, as your autonomic nervous system is responsible for respiratory function too.

Sleep apnea is a life-threatening disease. It has, for example, been linked to an increased risk of stroke and heart attack.

And for a long time, scientists believed it was the lack of oxygen intake while sleeping that caused these secondary diseases.

But a new study published in the journal Sleep Breathing Physiology and Disorders reveals that untreated sleep apnea depletes you of an essential vitamin. And this may be one of the biggest risk factors of sleep apnea.

Greek scientists decided to investigate not only whether sleep apnea sufferers have lower vitamin D levels than healthy sleep-breathers have, but also whether the most common sleep apnea treatment could increase vitamin D.

They recruited 30 people with sleep apnea and 30 healthy controls.

They first measured their subjects’ serum 25-hydroxyvitamin D (25(OH)D) levels, which is the form in which our bodies store vitamin D. They measured these levels at the beginning of the study and again after 3 and 12 months of continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP) treatment.

The subjects with sleep apnea were divided according to how well they adhered to their CPAP treatment. At least four hours of use for at least 70 percent of nights counted as good adherence.

Subjects who followed their CPAP program experienced a smaller drop in vitamin D levels than those who used the treatment inadequately over 12 months.

This association was so strong that they could use it to predict the vitamin D levels of the sleep apnea sufferers over 12 months.

Low levels of vitamin D have been associated with a long list of diseases. It has been proven to worsen arthritis and increase blood pressure and heart plaque buildup, leading to stroke and heart attack.

Therefore, if you suffer sleep apnea, it’s wise to spend extra time in the sun and supplement with vitamin D. We don’t know if it will improve sleep apnea but it will at least help reduce the damage it causes.

The researchers collected the information of 155,448 adult residents of Ontario that had first been collected by the Ontario Health Study. Their subjects had an average age of 46, 75 percent of them were white, and 60 percent were women.

The information included their levels of physical activity, their sleep quality, their sleep apnea status, their weight, their age, their sex, and a whole range of additional sociodemographic, lifestyle, and medical information.

Those subjects who had sleep apnea were more sedentary than healthy sleepers were, reporting that they sat for a median of 4.4 more hours per week.

This means that half of them sat for more than 4.4 hours per week longer than healthy sleepers did, which is already an important finding.

When the researchers analyzed further, they noticed that higher physical activity levels were linked to a reduced risk of sleep apnea.

They found that small increases in physical activity, such as adding 20 minutes to a leisurely walk or 8 minutes of strenuous exercise to a daily routine could reduce the risk of sleep apnea by 10 percent.

It may seem obvious that exercise works probably because it reduces obesity, which is a known cause of sleep apnea.

But these scientists adjusted their results to ensure that known causes of sleep apnea like sex, age, and obesity did not interfere, meaning that exercise was an independent standalone method to prevent and/or treat sleep apnea.

When the benefits of weight loss were added as benefits of exercise to prevention and treatment of sleep apnea, then exercise is even more effective.

Snoring is not only upsetting for a person sharing a bedroom with you; it can also be dangerous for your health.

A number of studies, including one published in the Turkish journal KBB-Forum: Elektronik Kulak Burun Boaz ve Ba Boyun Cerrahisi Dergisi, have found that snoring can actually drastically harm one of your senses.

We know that noise-induced hearing loss can result from loud music through earphones or in clubs and from prolonged exposure to machinery in factories.

But now, researchers claim snoring can also trigger hearing loss.

Researchers recruited 72 subjects, all of whom had been diagnosed with sleep apnea.

The loudness of sound is measured in decibels (DB). The scientists divided their subjects by the loudness of their snoring: above and below 65 dB.

They then tested these people’s hearing on different frequencies of tones and on speech recognition.

Loud snorers had much worse hearing than light snorers.

This was true for sounds in both their ears, for pure tones at various frequencies, and for speech recognition.

They were especially bad at hearing high frequency sounds at 4,000 and 8,000 hertz, which had to be turned up very high before they could hear them.

Unless it is caused by one big explosion, noise induced hearing loss is normally gradual and most people who suffer from it cannot detect its progress.

Because snoring continues for approximately 8 hours a day (or night) and it is a sound that is so close to you, it is no surprise that 65 dB is enough to gradually affect your hearing.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment –  Why Sleep Apnea Cures Don’t Work (and the solution)

It’s terrifying how few people actually benefit from traditional sleep apnea treatments, such as the CPAP mask.

But some do.

So, why does it work for some but not all?

Australian researchers recently found the answer to this question and published their findings in the journal Sleep.

And with those findings, we have a solution that could help everyone suffering from sleep apnea.

From previous research, the researchers identified a problem often overlooked: at least one-third of sleep apnea patients also suffers from insomnia. These people respond poorly to sleep apnea treatment, partly because sleep apnea is not their only problem and partly because they adhere very poorly to sleep apnea treatment programs, such as continuous positive airway pressure.

Another problem is that where doctors diagnose the problem correctly by identifying both insomnia and sleep apnea, they often prescribe sedatives to help the patient sleep better. But such drugs aggravate the sleep apnea, as they relax the airway muscles too much, leading them to collapse, which causes sleep apnea.

In response, the Australian research team decided to investigate whether people with this debilitating double whammy of insomnia and sleep apnea would respond better if insomnia were treated first with cognitive behavioral therapy before the sleep apnea was tackled with continuous positive airway pressure.

They recruited 145 patients with co-occurring insomnia and sleep apnea, often called COMISA.

They first divided them into two groups: one group that received four sessions of cognitive behavioral therapy followed by continuous positive airway pressure, and another group that received their treatments as usual followed by continuous positive airway pressure. Some of the usual treatments involved no treatment at all, and others involved drugs.

After these treatments, the researchers followed their study subjects for six months to see what would happen.

Firstly, they noticed an increase of 87 percent in acceptance of continuous positive airway pressure by the cognitive behavioral therapy group, leading to 61 minutes per night longer use of the airway pressure devices when compared to the treatment-as-usual group.

This lasted for four months.

After six months, combined cognitive behavioral therapy and continuous positive airway pressure had led to a 52 percent improvement in insomnia severity (compared to 35 percent in the other group).

It had also led to a 48 percent improvement in night time insomnia complaints, versus 34 percent in the other group, and a 30 percent improvement in negative sleep-related beliefs, compared to 10 percent in the other group.

Obstructive Sleep Apnea Treatment – Sleep Apnea – Unexpected, Deadly Consequences

If you suffer sleep apnea, you know how being tired during the day can put you and others in danger. You may also know that sleep apnea can cause stroke, heart attack and even dementia.

But a new study reveals more subtle consequences of sleep apnea. And one that’s more fatal than all the others put together.

Fortunately, it also reveals a possible cure for this horrendous disease.

Treatment-resistant depression and suicidal major depressive disorder are two of the worst conditions that you can possibly have, as anyone who has had them will tell you.

A study in the Journal of Psychiatric Research now offers sleep apnea as a possible cause for these conditions, and that link might lead to a solution.

The team behind the research didn’t set out to look at sleep apnea at all. They were interested in whether combining insomnia treatment with depression treatment could reduce suicidal thoughts. But, once research got underway, it struck them that a lot of their subjects with major depression also had sleep apnea.

So, they started a new study. They looked at major depressive disorder sufferers but excluded those who were at risk of sleep apnea, so think people on sleeping tablets, people with obesity and also restless leg syndrome.

But even after excluding people with these risk factors, they still found that 17 of the 125 subjects they tested either in the laboratory or at home had sleep apnea, which makes it 14 percent.

That’s nearly the same as the average occurrence of sleep apnea in the general population, even though the high-risk subjects had been excluded.

So, even though they excluded men who snored, were overweight and felt sleepy during the day, the percentage remained roughly the same. In other words, it was high.

This does not mean that depression causes sleep apnea, or that sleep apnea causes depression, but it does mean that the percentage of sleep apnea sufferers in a population of patients with major depressive disorder with suicidal thoughts is much higher than you might expect.

It’s not known why this happens, but it could be that many cases of major depressive disorder, including treatment-resistant ones (which make up half of all cases), might respond to sleep apnea treatment.

The researchers point out that people with sleep apnea are quite likely to be depressed, too, so depression treatments are unlikely to work for them because their problem is to do with sleep. They don’t have a problem with the neurotransmitters that antidepressants aim to treat, and they don’t have the kind of psychological problem that therapy might be able to help.

This means that if there are lots of hidden cases of sleep apnea among major depressives with suicidal thoughts, it might be better to treat them for sleep apnea than for depression.
