A team of Korean researchers tested the relationship between acid reflux and a range of head and neck cancers.

They ran two separate studies.

They collected medical information from the Korean National Health Insurance Service National Sample Cohort from 2002 to 2013. All the patients considered were older than 40, since this is the age where these forms of cancer become more common.

In the first study, they identified patients with acid reflux who had sought treatment and matched them with twice as many people from the general population without acid reflux. They then checked on who went on to develop cancer of the lips, oral cavities, oropharynx, hypopharynx, and larynx.

In the second study, they identified people with larynx cancer, matching them with four times as many people without cancer, and then corresponded this with who had a history of acid reflux.

In the first study, they found that people with acid reflux were 2.32 times more likely than healthy people to develop cancer of the larynx.

Cancers of the lips, oral cavities, oropharynx, and hypopharynx were not more common in the acid reflux group.

In the second study, they found that people with cancer of the larynx were 2.03 times more likely to have a history of acid reflux than those without this type of cancer.

This definitely suggests that acid reflux poses a serious risk for larynx cancer.

But larynx cancer is not the only danger, nor is acid reflux. In fact, another study has shown that you are one thousand, three hundred, and forty-five percent more likely to get one of six other fatal types of cancers.

According to a recent study, published in the Naunyn-Schmedeberg’s Archives of Pharmacology, a specific type of tea not only helps people to lose weight, but it can also drastically assist in improving type 2 diabetes.

In fact, the effects of drinking this tea were similar to taking two types of medications that are recommended to non-insulin dependent type-2 diabetics in order to control their condition.

Researchers from the Keimyung University School of Medicine conducted the study to find out whether green tea was able to help people lose weight, as well as regulate the glucose levels of type-2 diabetes.

The results revealed specific ingredients within green tea, called gallated catechins, that worked to inhibit the glucose uptake in the intestines.

The study itself began with the presumption that people could ingest enough of the gallated catechins to lower the blood glucose levels within the body from one cup of green tea, a quantity that could be consumed daily.

But it turns out that this isn’t necessarily so.

You see, as helpful as gallated catechins are when in the gut, it increases insulin resistance when entering the bloodstream, which is very bad for diabetic or obese patients.

To conduct the study, the researchers fed both diabetic and healthy mice a high-fat diet and then supplemented this with extracts of green tea.

As a preventative measure for the potentially harmful effect of gallated catechins, they bound the gallated catechins with polyethylene glycol, a non-toxic resin, so that the former wouldn’t leak into the bloodstream.

The results were quite clear: the mice that were fed high doses green tea extract with the polyethylene glycol addition not only lost weight, but also experienced a great reduction in glucose intolerance and insulin resistance.

The mice, however, who only received the extract without polyethylene glycol reaped almost no benefits from the green tea.

As long as the green tea extract is combined with polyethylene glycol, drinking a couple of cups of green tea should provide enough gallated catechins to drastically inhibit glucose uptake in the gut and therefore improve both cases of obesity and type-2 diabetes.

The effects of drinking green tea (with polyethylene glycol) were the same as taking two types of medications that are recommended to non-insulin dependent diabetics to control their condition.


Reverse Type-2 Diabetes Symptoms - Diabetics Facing Any Type Of Surgery Beware

If you suffer from type 2 diabetes and are facing any type of medical procedure in the near or far future, you need to pay especial attention to today’s article.

According to a new study published in the journal Diabetes Care, this could lead to sever consequences.

And there is only one thing you can do to avoid it.

Researchers recruited patients from the hospital, who needed surgery between 2013 and 2016 and who were 54 years and older, categorizing them according to their diabetes status.

Of the 7,565 patients, 30% had diabetes and 37% had pre-diabetes, which is higher than the average numbers in the healthy and younger populations.

The patients were followed for six months after their surgery to see how well they recovered and also to enable the scientists to compare the groups with each other.

After these six months, diabetics were 29% more likely than nondiabetics to have died and 32% more likely to have suffered major complications.

In addition, they were 50% more likely than their nondiabetic counterparts to have been admitted to the intensive care unit, 67% more likely to have needed mechanical ventilation, and they also needed a longer hospital stay to recover.

This applied to any type of surgery, not just serious vascular surgery.
The only thing you can do to avoid these surgery complications is to focus on tackling your type 2 diabetes.

Scientists have known for a long time that type 2 diabetics are more vulnerable to blindness than their healthy peers due to the damage to the blood vessels in their eyes and the group of eye disease that can result from that.

But an article in the journal Laryngoscope now shows that another sense is even more affected by type 2 diabetes than sight.

A team of scientists examined the medical data of 978 participants in the 2013-2014 National Health and Nutrition Examination Survey, all of whom were elderly or in their 50’s.

The available health information included all the markers that indicate type 2 diabetes or type 2 diabetes risk and the results of an eight-item self-administered scratch-and-sniff smell test.

Those who were the most insulin resistant were twice as likely as the least resistant to have smell dysfunction.

Blood insulin scores, fasting blood glucose levels, and glycohemoglobin (a test of long-term glucose control) did not have an effect on smell.

This meant that you could start developing smell dysfunction even before having full-blown diabetes, and that it will continue even if your diabetes is well controlled.

Given that many individuals with high blood pressure can end up on multiple medications, beetroot juice is a great option. Just be aware that beetroot juice can have a burning effect on the throat on its own. If you want to avoid that, mix it with a carrot/apple juice combination.

Unfortunately, beetroot juice is also a “love it” or “hate it” type of drink. Some people just can’t drink it, no matter how healthy it may be.


Get Your Blood Pressure Down - High Blood Pressure and Dementia Connection Explained

The journal Stroke has just published a study on the connection between high blood pressure and dementia, which was conducted by a team of scientists led by the UC Davis School of Medicine.

Not only does this connection give us a way to detect dementia 20-30 years before it strikes, it (more importantly) also leads us to find a solid cure for both high blood pressure and an early onset of memory loss and dementia.

To be precise, the study traced the connection from lifestyle, to high blood pressure, to atherosclerosis, to a decrease in brain matter.

For data, they used health statistics from approximately 1,900 people whose information was collected by the Framingham Heart Study.

They considered three important test scores:

– an arterial tonometry measurement of blood pressure
– a carotid femoral pulse wave velocity measurement of artery hardening (atherosclerosis)
– an MRI brain scan as a measurement of brain volume and structure.

They found that when compared to people with normal arterial structure, those with hardened arteries had higher blood pressure, less white brain matter, and structurally damaged grey brain matter.

Using this data, the researchers speculated the following connection:

1. Lifestyle factors like high cholesterol diets and a lack of exercise caused both high blood pressure and a buildup of plaque in your arteries.

2. This will cause your arteries to harden or stiffen.

3. Stiff arteries further increase blood pressure, because your heart must pump a lot harder to get blood through these inflexible plaque-clogged arteries.

4. Together, all this arterial damage restricts the blood flow to your organs, including your brain.

5. Insufficient blood flow to the brain then causes atrophy in the white and grey matter.

This shows us that lowering blood pressure and improving cardiovascular health is essential to our cognitive function further down the road.


But an interesting aspect for me is that this is further proof of the main underlying cause of Alzheimer’s and Dementia – a cause that I’ve been preaching for years now.

I’m talking about lack of oxygen-filled blood to the brain.

A new research study conducted by the scientists of Queen Mary College at the University of London has recently published an article in Hypertension, the journal of the American Heart Association, which had astonishing results.

Since the overall point of the study was to determine whether optimal choices in diet and lifestyle could indeed affect blood pressure levels, the hypothesis was correct as the answer was an emphatic and resounding “yes!”

The amount of nitrate used in the study was equal to consuming either two beets or a bowl of lettuce. This shows that just ONE meal that was high in nitrate is enough to lower your blood pressure throughout the day.

Remember, when it comes to high nitrate foods, you aren’t limited to beetroot; you can also add carrots, fennel, lettuce, radishes, cabbage, spinach or green beans to your meals for the same results. It seems that variety is not only the spice of life; it might actually prolong it!

Compared with the medication group, they improved every aspect studied, from pain to regurgitation, to cough, to physical, psychological, and social functioning. And all without any risk of medicinal side effects.

The researchers further suggested that the acupuncture would not have to continue at the frequency of three treatments per week once the condition has been brought under control. After all, few people would consider that to be a tolerable commitment of time and effort.

Most often we think of Acid Reflux or heartburn as mere inconvenience. It may keep you up at night and prevent you from enjoying a good meal but it’s not dangerous.

Okay, it’s been linked to ulcer but we’re talking about something much more serious.

New study published in journal JAMA Otolaryngology: Head & Neck Surgery, proves that acid reflux increases your risk of six types of cancers by up to 286% (almost as bad as smoking).

The Louisiana researchers used the Surveillance, Epidemiology, and End Results Medicare database to identify 13,805 people with upper airway and upper digestive tract cancers who were added to the database between 2003 and 2011.

They were all 66 years and older.

They examined them for GERD and compared them with a randomly picked group of 13,805 Medicare beneficiaries without cancer or GERD.

GERD (Gastroesophageal reflux disease), is a very common digestive disorder that most often the cause of acid reflux or heartburn.

They found that elderly people with GERD were, compared to those without GERD:

– 2.86 times more likely to have cancer of the larynx
– 2.54 times more likely to have cancer of the hypopharynx
– 2.47 times more likely to have cancer of the oropharynx
– 2.14 times more likely to have cancer of the tonsils
– 2.04 times more likely to have cancer of the nasopharynx, and
– 1.40 times more likely to have cancer of the sinuses.

All these structures are in the back of your throat or at the top of your esophagus.

The reason acid reflux can almost triple your risk of these cancers is that it lets strong stomach acid run up to your throat, damaging the cells in that area. It’s in essence the same as exposing your cells to strong chemicals.

This shows that acid reflux (GERD) should not be treated lightly. If you have frequent heartburn, you should take immediate action to cure your condition.


Cure Acid Reflux and GERD - Innocent Heartburn Drugs Found Deadly (new study)

Most people experience a little heartburn (acid reflux) once in a while. Nothing serious, right?

And why not grab a couple of common heartburn pills. Can’t do any harm, right?

Because the journal BMJ Open recently published a study by researchers from the Saint Louis Health Care System, Washington University School of Medicine at Saint Louis, and Saint Louis University that suggests that taking one popular kind of acid reflux drug will increase your risk of dying soon by 25%.

Researchers used data collected by the U.S. Department of Veterans’ Affairs to identify people who had been prescribed a proton pump inhibitor (or PPI) and people who had been prescribed an H2 blocker.

Like PPI, H2 blockers also prevent the cells of your stomach from producing acid, but they are considered to be weaker and safer than PPIs.
The 349,312 subjects were followed for five years.

Compared with those who took H2 blockers, those who took PPIs had a 25% greater chance of dying during that five-year period.

The risk of death was not associated with any specific cause of death. They were just more likely to die of any cause.

Approximately 8% of American adults take PPIs, often unnecessarily and under almost no medical supervision. So, a 25% or higher risk of death translates to thousands of deaths per year.

And this makes a new study that happened in the University of Louisville and presented at the American Association of Anatomists annual meeting a big deal.

This is as it revealed a two minutes daily habit that prevents and could even reverse arthritis.

In past studies, researchers have highlighted the fact that people with chronic gum disease are more than twice as likely as the general population to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

These studies made scientists think that the bacteria responsible for gum disease, called porphyromonas gingivalis, might actually be the cause of other inflammatory diseases, rather than just co-occurring with them.

They put together their new research and from that, authored a paper in the Journal PLOS Pathogens in 2013, offering a hypothesis of how this works.

In studies on mice, they found that porphyromonas gingivalis produced an enzyme called peptidylarginine deiminanse (or PAD), which is not found anywhere else in the body.

The problem with PAD is that it converts certain proteins into citrulline proteins, and our immune systems really hate citrulline proteins!

Our immune systems treat them as harmful foreign objects that need to be destroyed. If citrulline proteins occur in our gums, our immune systems attack our gums. If they appear in our joints, our immune systems attack our joints.

Well, keep your chin up, because researchers at Royal Veterinary College in London report that there is this one awesome vegetable that keeps arthritis pain away and cartilage damage to a minimal.

Mom was right all along – broccoli is good for you and you should be eating it as often as you can. The reason why broccoli is so good for osteoarthritis is because of a chemical compound present in it.

Broccoli has a phytochemical called sulforaphane that has been known to block inflammation and also reduce damage to cartilage.

Researchers have identified that sulforaphane provides benefits against osteoarthritis by blocking certain enzymes in our system that cause inflammation and joint destruction.

In a study from the University of East Anglia and University of Oxford, the effects of sulforaphane on cultured cartilage cells were observed.

When inflammation was induced, normal cells released a lot of enzymes that break down cartilage. On the other hand, sulforaphane-treated cells did not produce as much of the cartilage-damaging enzymes, and hence showed a reduction in cartilage damage.

Sulforaphane improves gait balance, joint movement and bone architecture, thus helping to offer tremendous improvements in those who have been suffering from osteoarthritis.

The only problem is, patients suffering from arthritis need to eat huge quantities of broccoli to gain its benefits. Not everybody can down 5 pounds of broccoli a day. A drug company in the UK is currently testing a sulforaphane pill based on these studies. Just one dose is equivalent to eating 5.5 pounds of broccoli.

So, are supplements the only way to get sulforaphane?

Not necessarily. There are many other vegetables that contain high doses of sulforaphane. Brussels sprouts, cabbage, cauliflower, bok choy, kale, collards, mustard, turnip, and radish are good sources of sulforaphane and a diet that includes generous helpings of these healthy veggies might just be the thing you need to cut down the pain and discomfort.

The main thing to beat arthritis is to have a solid strategy. There is no one magic pill that cures everything. Do a little bit of this and a little bit of that, and before you know it, the pain is gone forever.


Preventing Arthritis in Fingers and Knees - New Arthritis Paradox Discovered

Arthritis (especially osteoarthritis) is often thought to be caused by the overstraining of the joints. For example, knee arthritis occurs from being overweight.

But the opposite may actually be true, according to a new study in the journal npj Microgravity.

Inside your knees, there is tissue called meniscus. This tissue is responsible for distributing your body’s weight evenly across your knee joint.

It consists of cartilage and gets broken down if you have arthritis.
A team of researchers noticed that astronauts who spent a lot of time in space had an increased risk of osteoarthritis. Interestingly, in space there is no gravity and therefore no strain on their joints.

The researchers placed meniscus cells in a bioreactor built by NASA that simulated space conditions.

After just three weeks, they observed genetic changes in the cells that normally occur when arthritis begins to take hold.

From this, they concluded that microgravity caused genes responsible for healthy meniscus tissue to switch off while simultaneously causing genes that led to the breakdown of this tissue to switch on.

The harmful effects of microgravity on weight-bearing joints might result from the fact that they are precisely engineered to withstand tension and large biomechanical forces.

When this tension and force in the form of body weight is removed in space, the joints cannot perform the functions for which they exist, thus triggering their degradation.

This is similar to what happens to the cartilage of people who don’t exercise at all. Their bodies seem to realize that their joints aren’t being used, and consequently starts breaking their cartilage down.

So, the key to fight arthritis is not to take all strain off the joint but to exercise it moderately, along with ensuring you make the right movements.
