Breast cancer is one of the leading causes of cancer death in women. The chance that you might develop cancer depends on both genetic and non-genetic factors. The latter may include diet, exercise, or exposure to other substances, including medications. 

Hypertension is a chronic condition that is often treated with medications known as antihypertensive agents.

Several different types of antihypertensive agents include angiotensin-converting-enzyme (ACE) inhibitors, angiotensin-receptor blockers (ARBs), beta blockers, diuretics and calcium-channel blockers.

Calcium channel blockers reduce blood pressure by limiting calcium entry into the muscle cells in the artery wall, thereby limiting muscle contraction. 

Channel blockers include amlodipine (Norvasc), diltiazem (Cardizem LA, Tiazac), isradipine (DynaCirc CR), nicardipine (Cardene SR), nifedipine (Procardia, Procardia XL, Adalat CC), nisoldipine (Sular), and verapamil (Calan, Verelan, Covera-PM).

Can blood pressure medications linked to breast cancer?

Long-time users of calcium channel blockers have more than double the risk for getting breast cancer compared to women not using the blood pressure medications.

According to new research, postmenopausal women who use this type of antihypertensive medications for more than 10 years may have a risk of developing breast cancer. Although these blood pressure medications are widely prescribed, data regarding their long-term impact is sparse. 

Overall, the use of antihypertensive agents was not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer—regardless of whether the use was classified as current, former or short-term.

However, the results from the research shows that, based on the type and duration of antihypertensive therapy, calcium-channel blockers had been seen to have a significant association with breast cancer risk.

In fact, menopausal women currently taking calcium-channel blockers for 10 or more years had two and a half times the risk of developing invasive ductal and invasive lobular cancers compared to women who never used such calcium-channel blockers and compared to users of other forms of antihypertensive agents. 

There has been some evidence suggesting that some of these blood pressure medications may be related to breast cancer risk. The study of nearly 3,000 women found that among high blood pressure drugs, only calcium channel blockers carry the heightened breast cancer risk.

The results also indicated that other types of antihypertensive agents, such as beta blockers, diuretics and ARBs, were not associated with an increased risk of breast cancer — even when used long term.

However, several previous studies had investigated the relationship between blood pressure medications and breast cancer, and findings were varied.

Though at least three previous studies have hinted at associations between calcium channel blockers and cancer, there are a few studies that did not find a link. 

Because calcium has so many vital functions in the human body, the fact that a drug affecting calcium dynamics could pose serious risk of developing cancer is not a surprise.

The changes in intracellular calcium concentration are also believed to regulate apoptosis as apoptosis — the programmed death of a damaged cell — is one of the body’s natural defences against cancer.

One hypothesis is that calcium channel blockers could prevent apoptosis in cancerous cells, however data on the subject is mixed and more research is needed.

The researchers concluded that long-term use of calcium-channel blockers might be associated with an increased risk of breast cancer among postmenopausal women. More research is needed to confirm this hypothesis and to evaluate the underlying mechanisms.

Despite the potential for concern raised by this study, the findings don't warrant any modifications of clinical practice. This was a good study, but it doesn't mean doctors should stop prescribing calcium channel blockers because it is an observational study.

Probiotics' benefits seemed greatest among people with elevated blood pressure (higher than 130/85), and probiotics with multiple types of bacteria lowered blood pressure more than those with a single type of bacteria, the researchers reported.

Researchers in India have discovered that a combination of rice bran oil and sesame oil works as well as blood pressure medications in fighting high blood pressure —without any side effects.

They presented their findings in the American Heart Association’s scientific session on high blood pressure research.

The group conducted a 2-month study in New Delhi, India, on 300 men and women with mild to moderately high blood pressure. The average age of the participants was 57.

The participants were divided into 3 groups. The first group received only a blood pressure-lowering medication (Nifedipine) that acted as calcium channel blocker. The second group used the oil blend, and the third group used a combination of oil blend and the medication.

The participants used about an ounce of the oil for cooking every day.
The results were simply amazing.

All the participants showed a significant decrease in systolic blood pressure. Those who used the medication showed a decrease in systolic pressure of about 16 points.

The group that used only the oil blend showed a decrease in 14 points.

The group that used a combination of medications and oil blend showed a 36-point drop.

Their diastolic blood pressure also improved dramatically. A 12-point decrease in the group that took medication, 11 points in those who tried the oil blend, and 24 points in the group that used the combination.

But here is the most interesting part of the research—the oils did something better that the medications failed to do!

They caused a drop in LDL cholesterol level by about 26 percent and a 9.5 percent increase in HDL level. No such effect was observed in those who took only the medication.

It is believed that all the beneficial effects are due to the healthy fatty acids and antioxidants present in the oils such as sesamin, sesamol, sesamolin, and oryzanol.

They created a line of mutant mice in which the gene for epoxide hydrolase was inactivated. They found that when the mice were fed a diet rich in unsaturated fat, the mutant mice had lowered blood pressure.

The study shows how a Mediterranean diet—with olive oil in the forefront—lowers blood pressure at the molecular level.

Even better, the same diet is shown to be effective for lowering blood sugar, Alzheimer’s disease and different types of cancer.

·         Licorice: In high doses, licorice has been shown to cause both an increase in blood pressure as well as a decrease in the level of the vital mineral, potassium.

Other spices known to spike high blood pressure include: Aniseed, Capsicum, Parsley, Bayberry and Coltsfoot.

You’ve probably heard of the Paleo diet (sometimes called the caveman diet) as super effective for losing weight.

The researchers tracked the blood pressure readings of 1361 participants over a period of 11.3 years.

In this period, they found that those who consumed the largest amount of proteins (about 102 grams every day) had consistently low blood pressure readings compared to those who consumed the least amount of proteins (about 58 grams per day).

There could be many reasons for this. It is possible that those who include high proteins in their diet generally choose a healthy diet which is crucial for maintaining healthy blood pressure.

Also, when you consume more proteins, it can make you feel fuller and less likely to snack on high calorie foods – resulting in ideal weight, which in turn benefits the blood pressure.

But that’s not all – proteins also have some direct effects. Certain amino acids like arginine help in dilating blood vessels and cut blood pressure as a result.

To make the high-protein approach even more effective, you should also consume a lot of fiber.

According to the study, those who consumed a diet rich in both protein and fiber had a 51% lower risk of developing heart disease.

The big pharmaceutical companies have, however, used endless resources and influence to trash any study that showed positive effects from this essential vitamin.

Research recently published in the online science journal PLOS One, however, revealed conclusive proof that high blood pressure is caused (and cured) by this one vitamin.

Research on mice recently looked at the connection between high blood pressure and vitamin D. In the two-part study, four groups of mice were given specific diets.

In one part of the study, the mice were given vitamin D-deficient and vitamin D-sufficient diets. In the second part of the study, they were further divided between a high-fat or low-fat diet.

This resulted in the four groups: Vitamin D-deficient, high-fat; vitamin D deficient, low-fat; vitamin D-sufficient, high-fat; and vitamin D sufficient, low-fat.

What the researchers found was that for mice that were in the vitamin D-deficient groups, both high- and low-fat diet, mice developed high blood pressure. It didn’t matter if the diet was high- or low-fat they all became hypertensive.

The mice who were on high- and low-fat diets but were vitamin D-sufficient did not become hypertensive.

What’s more, when the hypertensive mice from the deficient group then received sufficient levels of vitamin D, their blood pressure stabilized and they no longer showed signs of high blood pressure.

Before the study, all researchers had to go on was correlative studies that were criticized by pharmaceutical groups as not having irrefutable proof; this study ends the debate.

But humans are a little bit more complicated than mice. And although taking vitamin D will help manage high blood pressure, it may not be enough.
