In this study, the entire New Zealand population was put under a microscope. The study involved 968,387 adults over the age of 20, of whom 34,056 suffered from gout.

 

They discovered people with gout were more likely to suffer fatal and non-fatal cardiovascular events, 40 and 35 percent respectively.

 

Those with less than six mg/dL (milligrams per deciliter of blood) had a 32 and 27 percent increased risk for fatal and non-fatal heart events respectively. Those with six mg/dL or greater were 42 and 43 percent more likely to experience cardiovascular problems.

 

Allopurinol is the most common drug prescribed for gout sufferers, so they investigated whether these prescriptions could reduce their risk of suffering from cardiovascular events.

 

For fatal heart events, those who were prescribed the drug during the past five years had an increased risk of 41 percent compared to the 33 percent who had not taken it.

 

For non-fatal events, those that took prescribed drugs had a 34 percent increased risk compared to the 38 percent of the non-drug takers.

 

This means that urate-lowering drugs did not work to attenuate the risk that gout posed for the participants. Therefore, drugs cannot control the worst potential consequences of gout.

The authors interviewed 47 men who had undergone penile prosthesis implantation between 2003 and 2012. They asked them about their level of satisfaction with the results. All the men chose to have the surgery performed to cure their ED, rather than for other medical reasons.

 

Of the participants, 79% percent of the men reported being happy with the implants. During the interviews, the most common reasons for reporting satisfaction included these:

 

1. Themes related to the enhancement of self-esteem, confidence, male identity, positive emotions, and general quality of life were mentioned 54 times.

 

2. Themes related to improved erections, vaginal penetration, penis size, and sexual satisfaction were mentioned 54 times.

 

3. Themes related to an improvement in their relationships and in pleasuring their partners were mentioned in 11 times.

 

The researchers concluded that those who were unhappy with the implants simply expected too much. Some were unhappy because they thought their penises would be bigger afterwards, while others expected it to be a panacea for a wide range of their non-sexual life problems.

 

It is possible that the small number of unsatisfied implant recipients can be even further reduced by proper preoperative counselling during which they should be furnished with realistic expectations to close the gap between their expectations and the eventual outcome.

 

If you want to know what the partners think, they seem to be even happier than the implant recipients are. 82% of the partners gave excellent sexual satisfaction scores. And a full 97% of participants and partners would recommend the surgery to others.

 

The satisfaction scores are surprising, given how unappealing the devices seem at first glance. There are essentially two types:

 

1. A non-inflatable implant that is the cheapest and that is entirely hidden inside your body. Unfortunately, this means you walk around with a permanent erection.

 

2. Inflatable implants come in several forms, but the basic components are a reservoir of saline, two cylinders inside the penis, and a pump between your testicles that you press to transfer the saline from the reservoir to the cylinders. When you are done, you press on the pump’s deflation valve to return the saline to the reservoir. All these components are also inside your body.

The easiest and cheapest way to obtain vitamin D is to sit in morning sun for about 25 minutes with 25% of your skin exposed.

 

The best food sources of vitamin D can be found in fatty fish such as herring, sardines, and mackerel, and fish liver oils. Salmon is also a great source of lean protein and omega-3 fatty acids; one small fillet will provide your recommended daily vitamin D intake. Small amounts of vitamin D can also be found in beef liver, cheese, and eggs.

 

You can also take daily supplements. The Institute of Medicine recommends a daily vitamin D intake of 600 international units for adults between 18 and 70 years of age, and 800 international units for those over 80.

 

You should, however have your vitamin D level tested before taking supplements, since too much vitamin D, can be just as bad as too little.

The National Institutes of Health (NIH) says that 23.5 million Americans suffer from autoimmune disease (AD). And according to their estimates, it beats cancer patients by a long stretch, who are at 9 million.

On the other hand, the American Autoimmune Related Diseases Association (AARDA) says that 50 million is the correct number.

Who Guards the Guardians?

 

The story of autoimmune disease begins in your gut. Deep in your small intestine, you’ll find a gateway that keeps your bloodstream safe.

 

This is the gut barrier, and it’s a lining made up of different barriers. It includes gastric acid, mucus and a wall composed of epithelial cells.

 

There’s another contingent in place for good measure, which is your friendly gut bacteria.

 

They’re in the TRILLIONS, and their job is to help with digestive functions like breaking down the food you ate.

 

And more importantly, these guys suppress the growth of harmful microorganisms and keep the bacterial tide in YOUR favor.

 

So, they all work together as a highly sophisticated security system. They let in the good stuff (like nutrients and vitamins) and keep out the bad stuff (like viruses and bacteria).

 

But if something goes wrong with one of the components of this intricate defense network, this leads to all sorts of immunity problems.

 

This is known as a “leaky gut.”

 

And when bad bacteria and other threats manage to exploit weaknesses in your gut barrier, they can get inside your body.

 

Not just inside your gut, but in your bloodstream.

 

Once that happens, your immune system launches an attack against these external threats.

 

It’ll send in antibodies to meet these invaders, but it can get ugly if this goes on for too long.

 

A leaky gut lets too much bad stuff in, and it puts your immune system on full alert all the time. And if this natural mechanism gets worn out, you’re in trouble.

 

This constant, heightened state of alert is called chronic systemic inflammation.

Since your body is so busy dealing with those invaders breaching your gut barrier, it will take longer for you to heal injuries or fight infections.
