Your adrenal glands are two tiny pyramid-shaped pieces of tissue situated right above each kidney. Their job is to produce and release, when appropriate, certain regulatory hormones and chemical messengers.

Adrenaline is manufactured in the interior of the adrenal gland, called the adrenal medulla. Cortisol, the other chemical from the adrenal gland, is made in the exterior portion of the gland, called the adrenal cortex. The cortex also secretes androgens, estrogens, and progestins. Cortisol, commonly called hydrocortisone, is the most abundant -- and one of the most important -- of many adrenal cortex hormones. Cortisol helps you handle longer-term stress situations.

In addition to helping you handle stress, these two primary adrenal hormones, adrenaline and cortisol, along with others similarly produced, help control body fluid balance, blood pressure, blood sugar, and other central metabolic functions.

In the heightened nervous state of adrenal burnout, the body overproduces adrenaline, cortisol and other stress hormones. Constant stress and poor nutrition can weaken the adrenal glands. Eventually, this causes the adrenal glands, the front line in the stress reaction, to show wear and tear and become depleted. This frequently leads to impairment in the thyroid gland, which can cause a further decline in energy level and mood and is one of the reasons why many people have thyroid glands that don’t work well.

When stress continues over prolonged periods of time, the adrenal glands can deplete the body's hormonal and energy reserves, and the glands may either shrink in size or hypertrophy (enlarge). The overproduction of adrenal hormones caused by prolonged stress can weaken the immune system and inhibit the production of white blood cells that protect the body against foreign invaders (in particular lymphocytes and lymph node function).

Eating steadily, all day long. Skipping meals is one of the worst things you can do for your body. According to a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Investigation, one ingredient is almost single-handedly responsible for the increase in Type 2 Diabetes cases in the world.

The scientists demonstrated how sugar, or to be more precise fructose, causes insulin resistance.

Mammals have a protein called carbohydrate-responsive element-binding protein, or simply ChREBP, in the metabolic tissue throughout their bodies.

In a study on a large group of mice, the scientists discovered that this protein is activated in the liver the moment fructose is eaten or injected.

This ChREBP then stimulates the liver to produce glucose, regardless of the amount of insulin that the pancreas produces to regulate it.

In other words, the insulin tries to regulate the amount of glucose your liver produces, but the ChREBP causes your liver to produce huge amounts of glucose, a bit like the Grimm brother’s magic pot that kept on cooking porridge until it filled the whole house, and the whole street, and the whole town.

The pancreas then responds by making more and more insulin, a process that eventually causes the rest of the body’s metabolic tissue to become resistant to insulin.

The scientists first discovered this process in mice, and then verified it by taking autopsy samples from human livers.

Incredibly, even when they genetically modified the mice to activate their liver’s insulin signalling pathways to the maximum, thereby creating mice whose livers should not have been able to produce glucose, fructose still triggered excessive glucose production by their livers.

Interestingly, according to the research, the ChREBP triggers this process only when we eat fructose, not glucose itself.

So, what contains fructose?

The only healthy forms in which to consume fructose are in fruit, vegetables, and whole grains. It is healthy in these forms because it is not the main ingredient.

Fruit, vegetables, and whole grains also contain plenty of fiber that stops your body from absorbing the fructose too quickly. As a result, your liver is not drowned in huge quantities of it.

Other sweeteners like beet and cane sugar contain combinations of glucose and fructose without any fiber to slow down their absorption by your body. Even honey, which many people consider a healthy option, is packed with glucose and fructose.

Most commercial sweeteners that are added to food contain almost pure fructose, as manufacturers have discovered that pure fructose is significantly sweeter than mixed fructose and glucose.

The worst of all – added high-fructose-corn syrup!

Sadly, three months later, their gut bacteria had returned to their previous state and their insulin resistance increased again. So, for now at least, this is not a permanent solution.

You can, however, significantly improve your gut bacteria without fecal transplantation:

1. Eat as wide a variety of foods as possible.

2. Eat lots of fiber to grow harmless bacteria. These include whole grains, beans, lentils, and leafy green vegetables.

3. Eat fermented foods like yogurt, tempeh, and sauerkraut.

Sleep Apnea Treatment - Sleep Apnea Permanently Destroys One of Your Five Senses

Diabetes and sleep apnea are two conditions that can seriously affect a person’s life and health but imagine having the two.

Sleep apnea is life threatening and so is Type 2 Diabetes.

This shocking danger of sleep apnea and diabetes was revealed in a new study presented at the 123rd Annual Meeting of the American Academy of Ophthalmology.

Diabetes causes macular edema and sometimes blindness. It happens because high blood sugar makes the blood vessel walls in your eyes bulge outwards, causing tiny ruptures from which fluid and blood leak into your retinal tissue, resulting in inflammation and swelling in your retina.

Taiwanese scientists analyzed the information of all patients who had been diagnosed with diabetic retinopathy over an 8-year period at Chang Gung Memorial Hospital in Taiwan.

While 45.5 percent of diabetics without macular edema suffered from sleep apnea an incredible 80.6 percent of diabetics with macular edema did, proving a connection between sleep apnea and macular edema.

The studies implied that not only does high blood sugar cause macular edema; it also results in low blood oxygen levels due to breathing pauses.

Researchers have previously shown that sleep apnea causes damage to blood vessels by promoting inflammation and high blood pressure, which means the small blood vessels in diabetics eyes are also damaged by a variety of other cardiovascular factors.

Macular edema is potentially treatable via laser treatments if caught in time.



Sleep Apnea Treatment - Sleep Apnea? Two more Fatal Consequences

By now, we know that people with sleep apnea are more likely than non- sufferers to develop heart disease, diabetes, and Alzheimer’s disease.

But a study in the new edition of the journal JAMA Otolaryngology-Head & Neck Surgery shows a disease caused by sleep apnea. This one is even more serious than any previous ones known.

On the bright side, there is an easy solution for sleep apnea too.

The researchers had access to the medical records of more than 1 million adults from the Korea National Health Insurance Service. From these, they picked 197 sleep apnea sufferers for whom complete records were available. They were all diagnosed between 2004 in 2006.

To match them, they identified 788 people who matched them in age, sex, health conditions, disability, and household income, but who were free from sleep apnea.

None of their subjects had been diagnosed with depression or anxiety by the beginning of the study.

In the next 9 years, people with sleep apnea were 2.9 times more likely to develop depression and 1.75 times more likely to develop anxiety.

This is yet another reason to tackle your sleep apnea as soon as possible.

The authors obtained their participants from the European Sleep Apnea Database, which records the medical records of people who have visited 33 medical centers across Europe.

They identified 20,000 adults who had been diagnosed with sleep apnea and had enough information to rank them from the least to the most severe cases.

When analyzing their complete medical records, they found that two percent of their subjects had also had a cancer diagnosis at some time in their lives.

It turned out that sleep apnea severity could predict the prevalence of cancer, especially in women.

Women with the most severe sleep apnea were much more likely to have a cancer diagnosis than women with mild sleep apnea.

This relationship between sleep apnea and cancer was present in men but was much weaker.

Why does this happen?

Most likely because cancer cells don’t function well in an oxygen-rich environment. When you stop breathing due to sleep apnea, or even when your breathing is constricted due to snoring, your blood oxygen level goes down, which then causes snoring.

This is yet another reason why it’s so important to treat snoring and sleep apnea as soon as possible.
