Cure Vertigo and Prevent Stroke: Is Your Dizziness a Sign of a Stroke?

If you experience a sudden onslaught of vertigo or dizziness that then passes, chances are you were suffering something called a mini-stroke.

A mini-stroke itself is relatively harmless, but because they’re almost always followed up by more mini-strokes and often a final big stroke, this is a serious issue that needs to be addressed.

But most of the time, symptoms like vertigo and dizziness do not necessarily indicate a stroke.

A Canadian research team and an American MD/Professor had an interesting debate in the January 2016 edition of the Annals of Neurology.

The Canadian team thought that too few people who visit the ER with dizziness go on to have strokes later, while the American professor believed that too many of them did.

This is obviously important, because if many people who complain of dizziness are suffering a light stroke and go on to suffer a more severe one, ER physicians will have to start using MRI brain scans on a lot more people who visit the ER with vertigo and dizziness.

This can become incredibly expensive, as millions of people visit the ER with dizziness or vertigo every year. In fact, since MRIs are so expensive, it could completely implode some countries’ medical systems.

The Canadian researchers examined the information of all patients discharged from ER departments in Ontario between 2006 and 2011 with a diagnosis of peripheral vestibular disorder.

Peripheral vestibular disorder is the name for a variety of inner ear and vestibular nerve conditions. It is the most common cause of vertigo.

They checked whether these people suffered a stroke within 30 days after their discharge from the ER.

Of the 41,794 vertigo patients, 76 (0.18%) had a stroke within the first 30 days of their ER visit. In other words, they probably had a light stroke, not peripheral vestibular disorder.

Those diagnosed with peripheral vestibular disorder were 9.3 times more likely to have a stroke in the next 30 days than similar people without vertigo.

But the Canadian team believed that, 0.18% (less than 2 in a thousand) of incorrect diagnoses are simply too low to start implementing widespread and expensive MRI scans on everyone presenting at the ER with dizziness.

In the same journal, Dr. David E. Newman-Toker from Johns Hopkins University used statistics previously unearthed by American researchers showing that three to five percent of people who visit the ER with dizziness have had, or will still have, a stroke.

Accordingly, he thinks more should be done to reduce or eliminate these mistaken diagnoses.

He argued that, with 4.4 million Americans visiting the ER annually with dizziness, three to five percent of mistaken diagnoses translates to 120,000 to 200,000 missed strokes per year.

Yikes! In fact, even 0.18% is 7,920 missed strokes per year, which is a lot.

You Can Reverse Vertigo Naturally Using This Method

Even if vertigo and dizziness is the number one complaint doctors receive, there is still no way to reverse vertigo naturally or by any means using the traditional treatment.

Chiropractors and physical therapists have been able to help with some simple forms of vertigo. But till now, one of the most difficult form of vertigo and dizziness has been absolutely non-treatable.

A new study, however, reveals a solution that works for almost everyone to reverse vertigo naturally. And it’s so simple that you may be complication-free within days.

Meniere’s disease is an inner ear disorder with symptoms that range from vertigo to tinnitus to hearing loss.

Unlike the most common form of vertigo that is caused by crystals that fall into your inner ear canals, Meniere’s disease is considered to be chronic and incurable. The type of head movements that cure common vertigo by dislodging crystals from your ear canals do not work here.

In the June 2016 edition of the Journal of Upper Cervical Chiropractic Research, a doctor/chiropractor described his research on 300 Meniere’s disease patients.

After various tests, he discovered that 90 percent of them were experiencing a misalignment of their atlas vertebrae.

Like titan Atlas whose job it was to hold up the heavens, your atlas vertebra is the topmost vertebra of your backbone, the one that connects with the base of your skull, holds up your head, and allows it to turn and nod.

It is carefully aligned with your spinal cord and your occipital bone, which is the bone at the back and base of your skull that encircles your spinal cord.

This alignment is neurologically vital, as your brainstem connects to your atlas vertebra. If these alignments are disturbed, there is pressure on your brainstem, and your brainstem controls everything from breathing and sleep to balance.

So what causes misalignment between atlas and your spinal cord and occipital bone?

Physically, the atlas vertebra is a ring with a few arches. These arches need to stay aligned with each other to keep your head 100 percent straight on your atlas.

According to this study, whiplash injuries and other blows to the head wreck the positions of these arches so that the bottom and back arches fall out of alignment with each other, pull your head and atlas out of alignment with each other, and put pressure on your brainstem.

Before chiropractic treatment on the atlas vertebra, the doctor asked the participants to rate the severity of their vertigo on a 10-point scale, with 10 being utterly unbearable.

The average score before the treatment was 8.5. This dropped to 3.0 with in the first six weeks, 2.0 after one year, and less than 1.0 after three years of treatment.

Where the atlas alignment remained in place, the average score was 0.8 after six years. The treatment succeeded for 97 percent of patients.

Thus, it seems as if upper cervical chiropractic treatment can cure the vertigo caused by Meniere’s disease.

Interestingly, this is exactly what our vertigo and dizziness exercises do.

Instead of using chiropractic adjustments, you align your neck and head position yourself using these simple exercises to reverse vertigo naturally.

They also load your brain with oxygen, because a lack of oxygen is another common cause of vertigo and dizziness.

What is the Best Way to Eliminate Vertigo at Home?

If you suffer Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), you may have tried to eliminate vertigo using a technique called “Epley maneuver” to move the crystal particles inside your inner ear. This is a very successful technique to eliminate vertigo, when performed by doctors or physical therapists but more difficult as do-it-yourself technique. When Dr Carol Foster – an expert in vertigo – experienced BPPV herself, she developed her own home technique to eliminate vertigo that ended up being easier and more successful than Epley maneuver.

A Simple Technique to Eliminate Vertigo at Home Discovered

If you suffer Benign paroxysmal positional vertigo (BPPV), you may have tried to eliminate vertigo using a technique called “Epley maneuver” to move the crystal particles inside your inner ear.

This is a very successful technique to eliminate vertigo, when performed by doctors or physical therapists but more difficult as do-it-yourself technique.

When Dr Carol Foster – an expert in vertigo – experienced BPPV herself, she developed her own home technique to eliminate vertigo that ended up being easier and more successful than Epley maneuver.

She calls it “the somersault maneuver”

After successfully treating her vertigo with “the somersault maneuver”, Dr Carol Foster conducted a study to find out which of the Epley maneuver and her half somersault maneuver worked best as a home treatment for vertigo.

Watch this Vertigo Treatment Video - Carol Foster, MD Vertigo Treatment

She published her findings in the journal Audiology and Neurotology Extra.

She recruited people with vertigo, divided them into two groups, and taught them either the Epley maneuver or the half somersault maneuver. After she observed that they could do it, she sent them home with instructions to continue it for six months.

She then tested them to see which group’s treatment was the most successful. The best test of vertigo is called nystagmus, which are the rapid involuntary movements of your eyes that occur when you are extremely dizzy.

After two months self-administered maneuvers under her supervision, the reduction of nystagmus was greater in the Epley maneuver group, but both procedures worked quite well.

After six months, however, the half somersault maneuver ended up more effective, with more failures in the Epley maneuver group.

So how should you do the half somersault maneuver?

Directions:

#1 - Kneel on the floor and look up at the ceiling.

#2 - Lean forward with your head as if you going to do a somersault. Your head should touch the floor with your chin tucked in so you face your thighs. Hold this position for about 30 seconds.

#3 - Turn your head 45° in the direction of the ear that causes your vertigo and hold it for 30 seconds.

#4- While holding your head at this 45° angle, raise it quickly until it is level with your back while you are on all fours. Hold for 30 seconds.

#5 - While keeping your head at the 45° angle, raise it all the way until the top of your head points to the ceiling.

#6 - Then stand up and turn your head so you are facing forward again.

The trouble with this technique (as well as Epley maneuver) is that it helps only for one type of vertigo and doesn’t work for everyone.
Another problem is that they take a long time to develop permanent results and you’ll probably have to keep on doing them.

What is the Best Way to Reverse Vertigo?

You Can Reverse Vertigo with These Common Vitamins

If you have tried everything for your vertigo without success, a new study now suggests there might be some hope of a relatively cheap and completely natural remedy to reverse vertigo.

If you have Meniere’s disease, you are probably sick of doctors who inform you there is no cure. In fact, medical science has tried various remedies, and one is as ineffective and horrifying as the other, from diuretics to cortisone to ear injections to surgery.

Meniere's disease is a disorder of the inner ear that causes episodes in which you feel as if you're spinning (vertigo), and you have fluctuating hearing loss with a progressive, ultimately permanent loss of hearing, ringing in the ear (tinnitus), and sometimes a feeling of fullness or pressure in your ear.

In most cases, Meniere's disease affects only one ear. Meniere's disease can occur at any age, but it usually starts between the ages of 20 and 50.

But a new study now suggests that there might be a simpler treatment to reverse vertigo that is related to Meniere’s disease that does not require drugs or hospitalization.

Researchers have known for some time that free radicals are extremely active in the inner ears of people who have been exposed to antibiotics, chemotherapy drugs, and some other drugs. In addition, previous studies have also found free radicals in the inner ears of people whose hearing had been damaged by loud music.

This made researchers at the Hiroshima University School of Medicine wonder whether antioxidants could fight off the symptoms of Meniere’s disease and either halt the progression or completely reverse the symptoms of this condition. They set out to find out and published their study in the journal Acta Oto-Laryngologica.

They gave 25 patients three oral antioxidants daily: 300mg of rebamipide, and either 600mg of vitamin C or 300mg of glutathione.
Overall, of the 25, 18 showed a clear reduction of disability.

More specifically, of the 27 ears with hearing disorder, 12 showed an improvement, of the 27 ears with tinnitus, 17 improved and, most promising of all, of the 22 people with vertigo, 21 improved significantly.

From this, the scientists concluded that radical scavengers had the potential to treat many of the symptoms of Meniere’s disease, especially the vertigo which is, by far, the most disabling of the symptoms that can lead to serious falls, car accidents, sick days, and so forth.

Up to now, this is still the only study on the ability of antioxidants to remedy vertigo, but five years after this study, Israeli scientists decided to explore whether antioxidants could restore hearing in people who suffered from sudden hearing loss. After all, hearing is the one Meniere’s disease symptom on which this first study had almost no success.

The Israeli team divided their 87 patients into a group that received the treatment and a group that received a placebo.

The treatment to reverse vertigo consisted of 600mg of vitamin E and 1,200mg of vitamin C daily.

By the end of the study, the hearing of those in the treatment group had improved by 29.4 dB at a rate of improvement of 63.3 percent. Those in the placebo group improved by 18.5 dB and 44 percent.

As a result, there might be something to the idea that ear problems often involves free radicals that damage cells and affect either balance or hearing or both.

Vertigo Caused by Your Sleep Quality (but easily solved)

Vertigo is a dangerous, annoying, and lifestyle-changing problem, some people suffer falls, panicked dizzy spells, and other complications resulting in loss of driving abilities and even injury.

But it’s studied so little that many vertigo sufferers are left with little to no relief, except for pills and potions. What’s worse, it seems to affect every aspect of life, including sleep.

So, Japanese researchers started investigating the relationship between sleep quality and a specific form of vertigo.

And the results were astonishing!

Their study, published in a 2010 edition of The Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, arose as a result of hearing many sleep complaints by vertigo sufferers. It compared the sleep quality of 35 people with Meniere’s disease with that of 35 healthy subjects.

Those with Meniere’s disease which had poor sleep quality, spent considerably less time in deep sleep than the healthy controls did, meaning that their quality of sleep was lower.

Because they spent so much time sleeping lightly, they spent more overall time sleeping than the healthy subjects, likely as an attempt to compensate for the poor sleep they were getting.

Those people who had poor sleep quality were also more likely than the non-vertigo sufferers to be aroused by sounds throughout the night.

One interesting discovery they made was that people with Meniere’s disease were more likely to suffer from sleep apnea than the healthy population.

Sleep apnea is a condition that causes the afflicted person to stop breathing while asleep. This occasionally wakes them up, but it is more common that they remain asleep during these spells.

The researchers suggested that these periods of low or no oxygen intake compromised the circulation of oxygen rich blood to the brain and inner ear, which causes the nausea, hearing loss, and spinning sensation.

The researchers considered if continuous positive airway pressure (CPAP), would improve vertigo symptoms. CPAP is a machine used for sleep apnea. It involves a ventilator that applies mild air pressure into your nose while you sleep. It’s supposed to ensure your airway does not collapse or become obstructed while you sleep, which typically happens if you have sleep apnea.

Researchers concluded that the CPAP use showed some benefit in relieving vertigo and hearing loss experienced by people with Meniere’s disease.

Based on these findings, they strongly recommended against sleeping tablets for insomniacs with Meniere’s disease because of the possibility that these might inhibit their breathing and thereby worsen their vertigo even more.

That only works if you can keep a CPAP on your face – all night. Many people hate them and don’t comply with their use. If this is you, or if you’d like to be rid of the machine altogether, you’ll need to try alternative, natural methods.

What is the Best Way to Treat Vertigo without Drugs?

A study performed by Taiwanese researchers suggested that a big part of people who visited the emergency department did so with dizziness or vertigo. Often with broken limbs after suffering a fall. This Old Technique Can Be Used to Treat Vertigo

A study performed by Taiwanese researchers suggested that a big part of people who visited the emergency department did so with dizziness or vertigo. Often with broken limbs after suffering a fall.

To treat vertigo, people are usually told to take vestibular suppressants or other drugs and sent home to cope with it on their own.

This seemed quite a cruel way to treat vertigo in the eyes of the researchers, so they went out to research an ancient Asian practices and found something that has worked for many hundreds of years.

The best part about this method to treat vertigo, is that you can access this Asian practice, no matter where in the world you live.

The authors of the Taiwanese study asked people who visited the hospital with dizziness to participate test the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture as a remedy.

They split them into two groups, one that received real acupuncture, and one that received a fake acupuncture treatment where the needles were inserted a centimeter or two from the real acupoints.

An otolaryngologist or neurologist verified that they all suffered from dizziness or a variety of causes of vertigo like vertebrobasilar artery syndrome and Ménière’s disease.

At the beginning, the scientists asked them to complete a questionnaire to record their level of functioning and their limitations when tackling specific activities. This was their baseline score before the treatment.

They then applied the real and fake treatments, and gave them two more questionnaires to complete twice afterwards: the first time 30 minutes after the treatment, and the second time seven days later.

The real acupuncture treatment group gave better scores than the fake treatment group both 30 minutes and seven days after the treatments.

The study indicated acupuncture was safe and that it worked for a variety of people who suffered from different types of vertigo. Many treatments often work for only one type, so that is a big potential advantage of acupuncture.
