Asthma Breathing Exercises - What Is Shallow Breathing and What It Can Do for Your Asthma

Breathing is one of the main problems which with asthmatics have to deal each and every day. They have to cope with that annoying feeling of chocking and of significant lack of air each and every day.

Yet, there is one method which can increase the amount of time between asthma attacks and can give asthmatic persons the possibility to breath normally or at least almost normally all day long. This technique is called Buteyko exercise and it involves an alternation of control pause and shallow breathing.

Even though you are not willing to perform the entire exercise, you should at least try the shallow breathing. This technique, which involves the inhalation of small amounts of air each time you breathe, can really improve your breathing and can prolong the time between the asthma attacks.

In order to perform correctly shallow breathing, you will have to keep your posture straight and your chest in a natural position. Then, start inhaling low quantities of air through your diaphragm. Avoid filling your thoraces with air, as your interest is to take in lower amounts of air. Inhale no more than 2 or 3 seconds and use the same time in order to exhale. This will prevent you from filling your lungs with too much air.

It is essential that you perform shallow breathing only by using your nose. So, whenever you are practicing this type of breathing make sure you keep your mouth closed. If by no means can you do that, use a tape to keep your mouth closed. This way you will be forced to breath only through your nose, which is extremely good for an asthmatic.

Last, but not least, try to get used shallow breathing and replace your old style of breathing with this one. This way you will raise the level of carbon dioxide and will start breathing normally.

You may not feel very comfortable with this at the beginning, but once you start practicing on a regular basis everything will seem much easier and in the end, you will get used with practicing only shallow breathing.

By constantly evaluating the quality of their breathing, the asthmatics begin to normalize their breath rate, which is the first step towards a normal life, without any medicine or inhaler around.

The Buteyko breathing exercise is made up of three main stages: the control pause, which means that you have to exhale all the air from the lungs and then keep your breath up to one minute. The more you can keep your breath, the better your health is. Yet, it is important not to push yourself or try to hang on more than one minute.

Another important step in performing this exercise is shallow breathing. This type of breathing involves deep breathing through the nose with your diaphragm. A normal shallow breathing should last 2 or 3 second for the inhale and equally as much time for the exhale.

Last, but not least, it is important to have a diary in which to put down the results of your exercises.

This exercise practically means the alternation of control pause and shallow breathing for a certain amount of time. After each set of control pause and shallow breathing, you must check your pulse and put down the results of your exercise (the amount of time you were in control pause, as well as the way you feel after doing this exercise).

In order to be effective, this exercise must be done at least three times a day. You will see that you will be able to breathe more easily, and the asthma attacks will become rarer and less severe.

Blood flow to the brain gets worse with age, and this is what causes most cases of dementia.

Simply put, if your brain doesn’t receive enough blood, then it doesn’t work as well.

Exercise is one of the best ways to increase cerebral blood flow—which is why there’s a new study about it in the journal Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise—but which sort is best?

Previous research seems to show that continuous exercise is better than interval exercise at increasing cerebral blood flow.

But what if you’re older and can’t manage a continuous 30 or 40 minutes of exercise anymore?

Does that mean you have to do just give up on the benefits of increased cerebral blood flow?

There is another approach called interval training, where you alternate between bouts of exercise and bouts of rest. But there isn’t much research available at the moment to say if it increases cerebral blood flow in the elderly to help them avoid dementia, so this is a gap in the research that the authors of the new study decided to fill.

They recruited 11 young volunteers with an average age of 25 and 10 older participants with an average age of 69.

All the subjects were male. They asked them to do some continuous cycling and some interval cycling.

The continuous training consisted of 10 minute’s cycling followed by 10 minute’s rest.

The interval training consisted of 10 separate one-minute bouts of cycling, interspersed with 10 separate one-minute periods of rest.

Both groups had to exercise at around 60 percent of their maximum intensity, making it a reasonable program that wouldn’t be too strenuous for older people.

During the exercise periods, they found that cerebral blood flow was higher during continuous than during interval exercise, but only in the younger participants.

When they included both the exercise and rest periods in their analysis, they discovered that cerebral blood flow was actually higher for the interval than for the continuous exercise group, for both young and old volunteers.

In other words, interval training is better than continuous exercise at promoting cerebral blood flow for all ages.

According to a new study presented at the American Physiological Society annual meeting at Experimental Biology 2018 in San Diego, one common ingredient can drastically improve your cognitive function.

And unlike drugs, it has no side effects and is completely free in most places.

In the study, recreational cyclists with an average age of 55 who had entered a large cycling event on a hot day with temperatures between 78 and 86°F were used.

They asked these cyclists to complete a trail-making executive function test as quickly and accurately as possible before and after the event.

The test involved the linking of numbered dots using a pencil and served as a measure of executive function, a psychological term for the ability to focus, retrieve needed information accurately from memory, and to plan and carry out steps to fulfil a goal.

Before the vent began, the scientists tested the cyclist’s urine to be able to categorize them into a group that was normally hydrated and one that was dehydrated.

Compared to their pre-cycling test, the normally hydrated group completed the post-cycling test a lot faster.

The dehydrated group, on the other hand, showed no improvement.
This shows that the elderly and those in their upper middle ages can reap cognitive benefits from exercise, but only if they are hydrated properly.

Older studies have found that, if you are dehydrated by only 2%, you will do poorer than usual on tasks that require attention, psychomotor abilities, short-term memory and fast retrieval.

In addition, you will struggle to form an accurate assessment of your own physical and emotional environment.

According to the literature, long-term memory, working memory, and executive function start deteriorating only when we are more than 2% dehydrated.

In other words, to stave off dementia and keep your brain functioning at optimal levels, drink a glass of water at least every two hours and drink more while you exercise.

Traditional Alzheimer’s research is mostly focused on genetic factors. Little notice is unfortunately paid to diet and other lifestyle choices.

When sugar (or glucose) riches your bloodstream, many of its molecules bind to protein molecules in a process called glycation.

Not only can glycation damage proteins in this way, but the by-products of the glycation process are often harmful to our bodies as well.
Some previous studies, such as one published by German and Australian researchers in the journal Biochimica et Biophysica Acta in 1997, have found that beta-amyloid, one of the proteins that seem to form plaques in the brains of Alzheimer’s disease sufferers, are mostly a by-product created during the process of glycation.

That already suggests that an excess of dietary sugar can contribute to Alzheimer’s disease, as it makes glycation more likely.

But the London and Bath researchers discovered another extremely harmful effect of glycation.

At the onset of Alzheimer’s disease, glycation damages an enzyme called macrophage migration inhibitory factor (or MIF).

MIF enzymes are a part of your immune system. When abnormal proteins start to build up in your brain, these MIF enzymes are supposed to be part of the response to remove them and/or to limit the potential damage.

This is how Alzheimer’s disease manages to get going. Glycation damages your MIF enzymes, and your damaged MIF enzymes are then incapable of playing their role of preventing abnormal protein plaques to form all over your brain.

In other words, if you eat too many simple sugars that build up as glucose in your bloodstream, glycation becomes more likely.
When glycation occurs in your brain, you are at serious risk of Alzheimer’s disease.

British tabloids love to misunderstand science if it gets in the way of a good story, so they pointed to the study as proof that drinking cola caused erectile dysfunction. But the research didn’t even look at ED so they’re way off beam. It merely raised the question of whether there was a link between high sugar consumption and erectile dysfunction.

Since then, no one has chosen to take up the question in a research setting. But Polish scientists did look at previous research in 2011 and put together reasons why consuming sugary soft drinks could be a cause of erectile dysfunction.

So, even though it’s not conclusive, if you experience erectile dysfunction then avoiding these types of drinks might be a good idea for you. And even if there is no direct link, your body will thank you for not filling it with sugar anyway.

There is a common drink that has often been blamed for ED. And according to a new study, rightfully so.

In a 2016 study on men, Japanese researchers found out exactly how much alcohol men can drink safely without compromising their sexual function.

They published their study in the journal Alcohol.

The study made use of 340 men between 19 and 70 years of age, all of them having undergone blood tests to exclude other medical conditions.

They tested men’s level of sexual function through a questionnaire called the Sexual Health Inventory. The lower your score, the worse your ED is.

Unsurprisingly, both the heavy drinkers and those who drank the most regularly received the lowest scores on this inventory, meaning that they suffered the worst ED.

But what counted as heavy drinking?

After that, you should purchase a vacuum cleaner with extra filtration and start vacuuming all your furniture and carpets. The items which cannot be washed or which is recommended that you wash only once or twice a year are the once which retain most of the dust mites and their eggs, so make sure that you vacuum them at least once a week.

Then, wash the beddings, the curtains, the blankets and duvet covers at a high temperature. It is recommended that you do not wash them below 60 degrees Celsius, otherwise the dust mites and their eggs may survive the washing process and this is something that you do not want to happen.

If you have children, sterilize all their toys by washing them in hot water. If the toys are not washable, you can put them in the refrigerator and leave them there at least one night. Dust mites cannot make it in low temperatures.

The mattress can also be a good place for mites, so take it out at least once in a month and let it air. Do not avoid that in the cold days of winter. Moreover, it is highly recommended to take it out in the cool air, as dust mites and their eggs will die at low temperatures, as mentioned previously.

These measures will make your house a safer environment, both for you and for the asthma sufferers as they will keep the dust mites away for good.
