What Can Increase Heart Failure Risk Besides High Cholesterol and Obesity?

I’m sure by now you are well aware that high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes and obesity can increase heart failure risk. What you may not be aware of is there is one condition that is not related to heart health that can also increase heart failure risk. Read on to find out more.

A new study that appears in the journal Atherosclerosis, a team of German researchers made some terrifying discoveries regarding cardiovascular disease.

One common condition that can increase heart failure risk – usually not associated with heart health – stands above even high cholesterol, type 2 diabetes, and obesity as causing cardiovascular disease that can lead to heart attack and stroke.

In fact, it’s almost as dangerous as high blood pressure or smoking.

Depression which can increase heart failure risk includes near daily occurrence of any seven of these symptoms:

– depressed mood
– diminished interest or pleasure
– significant weight loss or weight gain
– insomnia or hypersomnia
– physical restlessness or incapacity
– fatigue, feelings of worthlessness
– or inappropriate guilt, difficulty concentrating, and suicidal thoughts.

This is according to the experts, the American Psychiatric Association’s Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM).

The German study ranked depression together with some common risk factors for cardiovascular death and found that smoking and high blood pressure led to the most cardiovascular deaths. Not surprising.


But the other findings were more remarkable.

Depression was responsible for 15% of such deaths, followed by cholesterol and obesity for 8-21%, and diabetes for 5-8%.

In other words, cholesterol, diabetes, and obesity do less damage to your heart than depression does!

This is not simply because depressed people tend to engage in unhealthy behaviors like smoking and drinking, as the scientists separated these from depression as influencing factors.

What they couldn’t account for was the impact of stress from feeling low on the cardiovascular system.

We’ve all been warned time and again that too much sugar in the diet affects your health. It leads to conditions like type 2 diabetes, obesity, heart attack and stroke – just to name a few.

Grown up persons should not consume more than 20 – 36 grams of sugar per day and for children, the limit should be 12 grams per day.

But added sugar is also found in big doses in savory stuff like ketchup and salad dressings. So the health benefits of the big salad you were so proud of having for lunch may be completely sabotaged.

Quanhe Yang and his team of researchers in the Centers for Disease Control analyzed national health survey data and found out that added sugar made up 14.9 percent of daily calories in American diet between 2005 and 2010. Then they compared this data with the incidence of deaths related to heart disease.

The risk of heart-related death increases 18 percent for those who received the average 15 percent of daily calories from added sugar, compared to diets containing little to no added sugar.

Here’s an easy way to reduce the risk of death from heart attack – by 50%.

Just drink less of this popular refreshment (and most people think this drink is healthy!) to avoid heart attack and premature death.

Really. That’s all you have to do. How neat is that?

A research group from Iowa University observed the consumption of diet drinks of 59,614 participants in the Women’s Health Initiative Observational Study.

Participant’s average age was 62.8 and none had a prior history of cardiovascular disease at the beginning of the study.

Researchers divided them into five groups depending on how many diet drinks they consumed per week.

10 years later, the verdict was out - Diet Drinks Increase the Risk of Heart Attack

8.5% of those who drank 14 or more diet drinks per week had experienced a primary cardiovascular event.

Compare that to 6.9% in those who drank 5 to 7 drinks per week, 6.7% in the 1 to 4 drinks per week group and 7.2% in those who drank less than one per week.

Those who consumed more than two diet beverages per day were 30% more likely to suffer from heart disease and 50% more likely to die from heart attack than those who never consume diet drinks.

The cause is the dangerous aspartame sweetener in diet sodas.

Aspartame breaks down into dangerous chemicals including methanol, formaldehyde and formic acid. Even regular soda drinks are healthier than diet ones, of course only when consumed in moderation.

Water is, however, best – so leave the rest to avoid heart attack.
