As a timely reminder, scientists have just released two studies that show that this class of painkiller is both an ineffective and dangerous treatment for arthritic patients.

 

Studies presented at the 2019 ACR/ARP Annual Meeting in Atlanta revealed some worrying facts.

 

Opiates have become commonplace. Seen as a quick temporary pain relief fix, they appear to be handed out like candy. Not only are patients becoming addicted, opiates also come with a host of other problems, some of which can be very dangerous.

 

The first study showed a big increase in opioid-use disorder hospitalizations among people with five musculoskeletal conditions including osteoarthritis, rheumatoid arthritis, gout, fibromyalgia, and lower back pain.

 

Because all these conditions involve chronic pain, sufferers are at extreme risk of receiving large opioid prescriptions.

 

People who constantly take large amounts of opiates will inevitably become dependent on them, not to mention, their effects will eventually wear off. Weaning yourself off opiates can be a long and arduous task, and in some cases, sufferers simply can’t come off the drugs due to addiction, and in other cases, the withdrawal symptoms upon cessation of use are devastating. This is the definition of opioid use disorder.

 

Researchers at the University of Alabama at Birmingham were not interested in the occasional accidental overdoses that happen, but rather in the use disorder.

 

They found hospitalizations increased 3.5 times for lower back pain and 24 times for gout with the two types of arthritis in-between. They also discovered arthritis patients who use opioids actually get very poor value for their money, especially when considering the addiction risk.

 

They collected 23 previously published randomized controlled trials with 11,402 subjects. All the subjects had arthritis.

 

At two, four, eight, and 12 weeks, the subjects reported a very small improvement in pain and function, but it was indeed very small.

 

In addition, they reported no improvement in quality of life, meaning that the opioids had not improved their quality of sleep, their depression levels, and their willingness to participate in normal life activities.

 

This is why it is important to find a remedy for arthritis that does not involve opioids, as they are both ineffective and harmful.

People with rheumatoid arthritis had lower levels of vitamin D in their bodies than their healthy peers did.

 

While vitamin D is usually a great suppressant of inflammatory cytokines, once an area is seriously inflamed, it becomes resistant to the positive effects of vitamin D.

 

That is, inflamed cells do not allow vitamin D to reduce their inflammation.

 

This means that vitamin D can help to prevent inflammatory diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, but it won’t be as effective for people who have already developed these conditions, unless they can get huge amounts of it directly into their affected joints.

 

This could also indicate that the standard amount of vitamin D needed for people already suffering arthritis should be much higher than those who haven’t developed the disease.

 

Generally, it’s recommended to spend 20 minutes outside in direct sunlight every day. If you have arthritis, you’ll want to spend much more time outside.

 

If you’re going for supplementation, make sure it contains between 1500 and 5,000 IU (International Units) of vitamin D3 per day.

In the past two years, several scientific articles appeared in academic journals that discussed the effectiveness of a new, non-invasive and hugely effective treatment for the relief of arthritis pain, inflammation and the restoration of movement in affected joints .

In the 2016 edition of the journal, Lasers in Surgery and Medicine, researchers gave 34 osteoarthritis patients between 5 and 10 low-level laser treatments to various joints.

Just before this study, the journal, Lasers in Medical Science published another study in which scientists compared two groups of 50 patients with knee arthritis: one received conventional physical therapy and the other received conventional treatment together with low-level laser therapy.

 

While 9 of the conventional therapy patients needed a knee replacement after 6 years, only 1 patient in the combined therapy group did, showing that low-level laser therapy is extremely effective and should be incorporated in arthritis treatments.

 

Low-level lasers are simple, non-destructive, red or infrared light between the wavelengths of 600nm and 1000nm (nanometres).

 

They’re very safe and you can even get similar home-use devices.

 

The exact mechanisms through which lasers relieve arthritis symptoms are not yet understood, but it is known that light at these wavelengths enters cells and warms them. This seems to promote energy production inside the cells together with other poorly understood chemical changes.

Living with Fibromyalgia

 

Fibromyalgia is a chronic and painful condition that is extremely hard to diagnose. The main symptoms are constant pain and stiffness in the musculoskeletal parts of the body, soft tissue tenderness and sleep disturbances leading to extreme tiredness. The pain is mostly felt in the neck, back, pelvic girdle and hands, though any other parts of the body may be affected.

 

This disease is very hard to diagnose because so many of the symptoms are similar to other problems like chronic fatigue, rheumatism and arthritis. Doctors must rely a great deal on their patients’ description of symptoms.

 

Diagnosis: Fibromyalgia Test

 

There is a manual standardized test that can be given to discover if there is pain at specified points of the body. If 11 out of 18 of these specified points are tender, and the patient has had pain in all four quadrants of the body for at least three months then Fibromyalgia is certainly suspected.

 

A compounding problem is that these symptoms can come and go from week to week. Numbness, tingling and burning may also be present and the pain can be affected by emotional stress, trauma and also by weather conditions such as humidity and cold. Too little or too much activity can also play a part in the amount of pain experienced.

 

Sometimes fibromyalgia can be triggered by an illness or injury, but it is also thought to be genetic. New research has shown that it may be caused by an interpretive defect of the central nervous system that causes abnormal pain perception.

 

Treating Fibromyalgia Symptoms

 

Once the condition has been diagnosed, there is much the patient can do to relieve the symptoms. Certainly the advice of a medical health-care provider should be sought and followed, but there are many alternative treatments that offer relief from the symptoms and most doctors agree that sufferers of fibromyalgia should put into place a multi-faceted treatment regimen that includes nutrition, exercise, dietary supplements, acupuncture, aroma-therapy, relaxation techniques and even the use of hot-cold therapies and humor to aid in pain relief.  

 

Over the counter pain relief medication such as ibuprofen can be used, while low doses of anti-depressants from the doctor can certainly help the sufferer to get better sleep. Lidocaine injections into tender pain points may also be needed for relief. Gentle exercise and stretching will prevent the muscles from wasting away and is also beneficial in reducing pain and stiffness

 

Fibromyalgia Help and Support

 

Because living with a chronic illness such as FM can be so debilitating, sufferers need emotional support as well as physical. Joining a fibromyalgia support group can provide helpful insights into the disease, while counselling sessions with a trained professional can open communication with friends and family who often cannot understand the extensive disabilities caused by fibromyalgia.

 

If you are a fibromyalgia sufferer, it is important to keep a hopeful attitude even in the face of debilitating pain, because this disease does tend to improve over time and there are always new and different treatments being discovered.  

 

The Difficulties of Living with Fibromyalgia

 

It's not easy to live with fibromyalgia.  It is not easy due to the fact that, like myself, you have no knowledge about how you are going to feel when you wake up in the morning.  One day there's pain beyond belief and the next you can feel as if you are walking on clouds, no pain and a day full of activity.  

 

My day normally starts with about 20 minutes of trying to stretch out my muscles and have them functioning normally again.  Then I have to pick up my little girl from her bed, and that can be a painful experience.  After that it's time to change her diaper, and that is also a huge problem for me as my fingers normally are not working properly.  Fortunately, my daughter has learned already to be patient with me.   After about half an hour it's time to try out clothes and see if it's going to be a good day or a bad one.  A bad day is a no tight clothes day.  Then it's breakfast time but normally I can't eat breakfast due to stomach problems also caused by my fibromyalgia. 

 

Then the day goes on.  If I have the strength, I will try to go out and do the shopping and also take out my kids.   The worse thing about fibromyalgia is that one gets so tired.  The pain can be so hard that nothing works and even if you have had a good night's sleep, you can wake up feeling as if you have never slept at all.  It takes control over every little thing you like to do.  One day I have all the strength I can ever use and the next day I have no strength at all. 

 

Fibromyalgia takes all the good in you, and makes you feel horrible if you do more than your body can take.   I remember once I was at a dance, felt pretty good that evening and had no pain whatsoever.  The day after the dance I could not get out of bed, I had to call for help.  I have also had to have home assistant, and help with almost everything for some periods of my illness.  It's been so bad that I haven't even been able to take my kids out to play.  

 

The weather is also a big problem for almost everyone with fibromyalgia. For me that means that when the temperature is between 0-15 degrees Celsius, I'm in severe pain.  Those days, I can do hardly anything, and that means for me about 6 months a year.   There are a few things that you, who don't have this illness can do:

 

1.   Remember that even if someone has fibromyalgia, it doesn't mean you can see it.  We have no evidence on our bodies that prove our illness and too often we get to hear that we are lazy, and "How can you be ill, it doesn't show".  Those words hurt.  Because we have often had to fight a battle with our doctors to make them realize that we have fibromyalgia and prove it to far too many people.  

 

2.   Also think about the fact that sometimes even a soft touch can hurt, so don't pat us on the back saying "you'll get better!".  It's an illness that is there for life.  

 

3.   Don't make demands on us, because what we can do today, we might not be able to do tomorrow.

And weirdly enough, this can be a problem even if your neighbourhood is quiet and seemingly well fit for sleeping. Even if you live in what some call “sleep towns”, it may be causing you to stay up in the night.

In a new study published in the Journal of Clinical Sleep Medicine, South Korean scientists used information from the National Health Insurance Service-National Sample Cohort (2002-2013) to identify 52,027 adults aged 60 and older with available health data.

They used this information to identify those who used one of two hypnotic drugs, zolpidem ortriazolam (sleeping pills).

They then consulted satellite mapping of artificial outdoor light obtained from the National Centers for Environmental Information to figure out whether the amount of such lighting was associated with the use of these hypnotic drugs.

They found that 22% of their subjects used one of these drugs to sleep, and that those exposed to the most amounts of outdoor light had substantially more subscriptions to these drugs.

Not only that, but they also used higher daily doses and the duration of their prescriptions were found to be much longer as compared to those with lower light exposure.

From these findings, they concluded that artificial outdoor lighting might cause the sleep disturbances that have become so common in the last few decades.

In essence, these outdoor lights work in the same way as TVs, computers and smart devices, tricking your body into thinking it’s daytime when in fact your body should be getting ready to fall asleep.

A healthy sleep routine depends on our internal circadian clocks. These mechanisms help our bodies tell time, so they know when to be active and when to be at rest.

But if something happens to our circadian clock, our body and mind get confused about the time of day, which can lead to insomnia.

A new study now proves that inflammation can turn the circadian clocks of mice on and off and could thereby lead to insomnia.

The researchers induced inflammation in mice, either through a high-fat high-carbohydrate diet or by injecting it.

They then noticed that the inflammation triggered an excess of the genetic factor called NF-kappa beta (NFKB).

NFKB then started a biological chain reaction that ultimately led to the tissue destruction that was caused by the inflammation.

Now, it also happens that the NFKB factor controls the processes through which our circadian clocks work; in other words, the processes through which our bodies can tell time.

Therefore, if you have an autoimmune disease, such as arthritis, type-2 diabetes or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS) and there is a lot of inflammation in your body, you probably do not sleep very well.

Up until now, researchers have believed that it was simply a function of pain, discomfort, and stress. Now we know that insomnia brought about by these diseases is in fact driven by the same factor that causes tissue destruction when there is plenty of inflammation is present.

An article that appeared in the Journal Advances in Nutrition in 2016 also found that people who ate a lot of inflammation-inducing foods, such like sweets and high-trans-fat diets, tended to suffer from insomnia symptoms, such as having difficulty falling asleep, difficulty staying asleep, and early awakening.

On the other hand, people on the Mediterranean diet, known to be one of the best anti-inflammatory diets around, suffered from the fewest insomnia symptoms.

This new study shows why high-inflammation diets may cause insomnia and how anti-inflammatory diets may help people remain free of it.

Overcome Insomnia - Can’t Sleep? There’s a 52% Chance You Suffer This Dangerous Disorder

It comes as no surprise that insomniacs score higher on depression and anxiety tests than good sleepers do. After all, lack of sleep can drive you somewhat crazy, right?

But a study in the latest edition of the journal Comprehensive Psychiatry suggests that it is much more than just mood disorders that insomniacs should worry about.

In fact, more than half of all insomniacs suffer a hidden but very destructive disorder.

Researchers decided to find out whether insomniacs were more likely to suffer from personality disorders than psychotherapy patients were.

For subjects, they recruited 171 insomnia patients and 171 psychotherapy patients who were presented to their clinic.

They matched them on age and gender and gave them the standard diagnostic questionnaire to identify the personality disorders from which they suffered, if any.

Interestingly, 52% of insomniacs scored positively for at least one personality disorder, which was substantially higher than the findings in the psychotherapy group.

While looking at specific personality disorders, insomniacs were most likely to suffer from a narcissistic personality disorder, histrionic personality disorder, borderline personality disorder, and non-specific personality disorders.

Given these findings, the authors of this study recommended that insomnia patients be screened for personality disorders, as there could be a possibility that their sleep disorder stems from these psychological problems.

However, there is an upside, which would be that insomnia which is resilient to standard treatments could become treatable by treating the personality disorders from which they result from.

But the scientists didn’t comment on the other side, such as once insomnia patients could be assisted to sleep well, would their personality disorder also be healed as well?
