You
have heard over and over again that high blood pressure is deadly.
But
how about low blood pressure? Is it possible that it is as bad or even worse than high?
In
some cases, the answer is yes and then you have to take immediate action to
raise your low blood pressure to a healthy level.
Low
blood pressure can be dangerous for two reasons.
It
can either restrict blood supply to essential organs, or it can indicate that
you have some other serious condition.
Restricting
blood flow to your essential organs poses obvious risks:
#1
- If your brain does not receive enough blood, its cells die. In a 2013 study
in the journal JAMA Neurology, researchers showed that people whose
diastolic pressure was below 70 mmHg experienced faster brain atrophy than
people whose blood pressure was in the normal range.
#2
- In 2016, a study co-authored by researchers at Imperial College London found
that people with clogged arteries who also have low blood pressure are at
higher risk of death, heart attack, and hospitalization for heart failure than their peers with clogged arteries and normal blood pressure.
In
addition, low blood pressure can indicate that you have one of the following serious
and potentially deadly conditions:
#1
- Internal bleeding reduces the amount of blood in your vessels and
consequently lowers your blood pressure. This type of bleeding can be caused by large cancerous
tumors.
#2
- An abnormally slow heart rate, called bradycardia, causes low blood pressure and can be a result of heart disease or progressive heart
failure.
#3
- Low blood pressure can be a sign of hormonal insufficiencies like that of
cortisol and the thyroid hormone. Cortisol insufficiency can cause your body to go into
severe shock, from which it is possible to die,
upon extremely stressful events.
Thyroid
hormone insufficiency can cause exhaustion, depression, and, for women, babies
with retarded physical and intellectual growth.
#4
- Some bacterial infections can lead to extreme septic shock when the bacteria
spread from the original site of infection. These bacteria typically damage
blood vessels, lower blood pressure, and possibly cause death.
#5
- Vitamin B12 deficiency causes low blood pressure, and this can lead to severe
mental and intellectual retardation. Because these can only be obtained in
sufficient amounts from animal products, vegans should consider vitamin B12
supplementation.
