Computer Protects Vertigo Patients from Falling

Vertigo places vertigo patients at an extreme risk of bad falls.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University have now discovered a way to prevent falls in people suffering vertigo and dizziness.

And the cure lies in watching a video on a computer screen, like the one you’re reading now.

They published their method in Nature Scientific Reports.

The researchers made their volunteers walk on a treadmill while facing a curved screen that displayed a moving hallway.

To trick their participant’s brains into believing they were extremely dizzy and/or falling, the scientists added side-to-side movements to the footage on the screen.

This is a clever trick because, while your brain knows you are not falling when placed in this situation, the visuals will make you feel like you are losing your balance and your brain will try to compensate for what you see and feel.

This is where the experiment becomes quite ingenious.

Through 14 cameras placed around their subject’s bodies and electrodes attached to their skins, they recorded how these desperately dizzy walkers altered their walking strides and body postures to stay safely upright.

The details of how each individual person compensates for a loss of balance is valuable, as it can be used to train them to do all this better in situations where their balance is even worse than in this virtual reality setting.

This is where this study is useful for the prevention of falls in people with vertigo.

Training vertigo patients to walk while they feel dizzy cannot take away their vertigo, but it can help them stay upright while they feel like they are spinning.

In the virtual reality study, people’s walking varied a lot more between short and long steps instead of taking steps of approximately the same length as usual.

Vertigo patients also used their core muscle to sway their bodies back and forth while they were walking, instead of holding their bodies more or less still like we usually do.

Their muscles synchronized perfectly with each other to find a coordinated physical response to the dizziness.

You Can Cure Vertigo and Dizziness Cured Using Two Natural Methods (worked for 95% patients)

What if…

• You could cure vertigo and dizziness through a method that has a 95% success rate.

• This method to cure vertigo and dizziness didn’t require medications or surgery.

Who wouldn’t want that? Just imagine, for a second, how much better your life would be. No more worrying about when you’re going to suddenly start feeling dizzy.

Good news: such a method to cure vertigo and dizziness actually exists. Right now.

Cervical vertigo is dizziness associated with neck arthritis, neck or head injuries, neck surgery, inner ear disorder, or any of the other problems that affect the cervical region in the neck.

About 84 patients suffering from cervical vertigo in the Rehabilitation Department of No. 2 People’s Hospital were divided into two groups.

One group received natural Chinese massage treatments. The other group received Chinese massage plus acupuncture treatment.

While the first group showed an impressive 80% overall improvement in pain and discomfort, the results of the second group were even more successful.

The combination of massage and acupuncture resulted in 95% effectiveness!

Considering how painkillers, medications, and surgery can cause different side effects and complications, treatment options like physical massage therapy and acupuncture are natural, safe, and free of any side effects.

But… guess what? There’s another way to treat vertigo… and it’s very effective at eliminating it for good.

How to Stop Vertigo and Dizziness from Ruining Your Life?

If you suffer frequent vertigo and dizziness, when you’re not having an episode, you’re probably dreading when it will hit you next.

It’s extremely stressful not to know when you’re going to have to stop the car, sit down, take a day off from work or activities or however else this condition ruins your life.

A study recently published in the Journal of Psychosomatic Research, reveals one quick thing you can do to stop vertigo and dizziness from affecting your life so negatively.

It’s something you can do right now and doesn’t cost a dime.

Many studies have shown that people who suffer from vertigo are substantially more likely than the general population to suffer from depression, anxiety and somatization.

This study wanted to find out which people were handicapped the most by their vertigo:

– those with depression,
– those with anxiety,
– those with somatization,
– or those without any of these psychological conditions.

By the way, somatization is a condition in which people with psychological disorders experience those disorders as physical symptoms, like anxiety presenting as nausea or pain without there being an underlying physiological condition that gives rise to the nausea or pain.

They recruited 111 patients with vertigo and measured their vertigo-related disability at the beginning of the study and after a period of 12 months.

They also measured their depression, anxiety, and somatization.

All three psychological problems caused the vertigo-related handicap to be worse than in those who experienced no psychological distress. Depression had by far the strongest aggravating effect.

To put it simply, those who worried the most about their vertigo were also the most limited by their disease. And this had nothing to do with the level of their condition.

So, if you can pep yourself up and focus on the positive things, your vertigo may not get better but the limitations it puts on your life will be less.

What Is the Best Way to Treat Vertigo for Women?

Treat Vertigo - Vertigo Caused by This Hormone Deficiency

It is often considered very difficult to diagnose and treat vertigo. However, a new study published in the journal, The Laryngoscope, reveals a simple cause and potential cure for the most common form of vertigo.

The cause is a simple hormone deficiency in postmenopausal women, and a method already exists to boost the production of this hormone.

There may be a simpler solution than going the medical route.

Researchers have studied benign paroxysmal positional vertigo that normally occurs when you move your head. The symptoms are extreme dizziness and even nausea and vomiting in the worst cases.

Oestradiol is one type of the female sex hormone oestrogen. The other types are estriol and estrone.

The researchers drew blood from women between the ages of 50 and 80 who had presented with vertigo. They used a group of women without vertigo as a control.

They found that those with vertigo had the lowest oestradiol levels, and those without vertigo had normal or close to normal oestradiol scores.

To confirm these findings, they gave female rats hormone replacement therapy to replace the oestradiol they lacked.

Consistent with their findings, the oestradiol replacement led to an increase in a protein called otoconin 90. When otoconin 90 is in abundant supply, you are less likely to develop benign paroxysmal positional vertigo.

This Simple Home-Based Therapy Can Cure Vertigo

A new British and Swedish study reveals disturbing findings on doctor’s ability to help people to cure vertigo.

A total of 296 vertigo sufferers, age +50, were either sent for face-to-face visits to a doctor, or were directed to a simple website with information and techniques to battle vertigo.

The Vestibular rehabilitation website for helping to cure vertigo was compiled by health psychology and primary care researchers at the University of Southampton and consisted of video demonstrations, text directions, personal feedback, and cognitive-behavioral coping strategies.

The general practitioners to whom the other group was sent were situated at 54 primary care practices in the south of England.

To measure the severity of vertigo, the researchers gave their participants the Vertigo Symptom Scale–Short Form at the beginning of the study, after three months, and again after six months.

By the end of both the three-month and six-month periods, the Vestibular rehabilitation group suffered less vertigo than the general practitioner group.

Moreover, after both these periods, the vertigo-related disability scores were also much lower in the Vestibular rehabilitation group than in their peers who received the standard treatment.

This shows that people can often have much better results by taking charge of their conditions themselves rather than relying on doctors that may sometimes be misguided.

Is Vertigo A Scary Sign Of Increase Stroke Risk?

Because vertigo is so unpleasant and scary, many people rush to the emergency room when it happens to them. But often it is not due to serious causes like increase stroke risk. Read on here to find out about the chances of having a stroke if you have vertigo symptoms.

Is Your Vertigo A Sign Of Increase Stroke Risk?

Because vertigo is so unpleasant and scary, many people rush to the emergency room when it happens to them. But often it is not due to serious causes like increase stroke risk.

An article in the journal Mayo Clinic Proceedings found that, even though dizziness accounted for 4% of emergency room and 5% of clinic walk-ins, only 15% of these were due to dangerous conditions, only 5.4% to stroke, and a further 5.7% to a mini stroke.

So how do you know whether to take vertigo seriously as a sign of an urgent health problem?

It goes without saying that any symptoms that accompany the vertigo, especially slurred speech, paralysis, and loss of consciousness, should be taken seriously.

But other than those, a new study in the Journal of Stroke and Cerebrovascular Diseases has now contributed to the question by evaluating whether vertigo plus sudden hearing loss, vertigo alone, or sudden hearing loss alone poses the greatest chance of increase stroke risk.

They obtained the medical records of 218,656 patients from the National Health Insurance Research Database of Taiwan from 2002 to 2009.
678 had vertigo plus sudden hearing loss, 1,998 had sudden hearing loss alone, and 215,980 had vertigo alone.

They followed the patients for three years until 2012 or until they had a stroke or died.

This is what they found about the chances of increase stroke risk if you have or don’t have vertigo symptoms:

#1 - 5.5% of those with vertigo plus sudden hearing loss ending up having a stroke.

#2 - 3% of those with sudden hearing loss alone suffered a stroke.

#3 - 3.9% of those who experienced vertigo alone had a stroke.

Once they had crunched all the numbers, they concluded that people with vertigo plus sudden hearing loss were 1.93 times more likely than people with only sudden hearing loss to have a stroke, and 1.63 times more likely than those with only vertigo to have one.

When they counted only the cases where the vertigo and sudden hearing loss occurred within three days of each other, the risks of stroke were much higher, at around 2.91 times higher than for sudden hearing loss alone and around 2.25 times higher than for vertigo alone.

This study is useful for two reasons.

Firstly, it draws our attention to the fact that stroke is not actually one of the common causes of vertigo.

Secondly, and possibly more importantly, it alerts us to the fact that we should not ignore vertigo as a mere ear problem if it is accompanied by sudden hearing loss, as this combination of symptoms are more likely than vertigo alone to indicate that a stroke might be in progress.
