Could Coffee Help Protect Your Liver from Alcohol?

Another noteworthy benefit has been added to the list of perks that coffee may have for your health. New research has found that drinking your daily java may help protect your liver from alcohol-related cirrhosis.

While a little bit of alcohol may actually be healthy, we all know that overdoing it on the spirits is extremely dangerous in a number of ways. One effect of excessive alcohol consumption is the potential for liver cirrhosis, a condition characterized by liver scarring, which can lead the liver to fail.

Another beverage that has been linked to a lot of health benefits — without the detriments — is coffee. Coffee may help to boost metabolism and brain power, as well as potentially lower type 2 diabetes risk, among many other perks.

So How Are Alcohol and Coffee Connected?

A recent study has found that two cups of coffee per day may reduce one’s risk of alcohol-related liver cirrhosis by up to 43 percent.

On coffee, the authors of the new study, published in the journal Alimentary Pharmacology & Therapeutics, wrote:

“Coffee comprises over a thousand compounds, many of which are biologically active and may affect human health. These include caffeine, chlorogenic acid, melanoids and the pentacyclic diterpenes, kahweol and cafestol… The biological effects of coffee include stimulation of the central nervous system, primarily by caffeine, the attenuation of oxidative stress and inflammation, and anti-carcinogenesis… In the context of liver disease, coffee appears to confer a number of protective effects.”

While previous research has shown associations between coffee and liver protection, this new study wanted to make a more large-scale analysis. The researchers involved in the study gathered data from nine previous studies on the subject of coffee and cirrhosis risk, and analysed the results.

Results of the analysis, which included over 430,000 study participants, showed that one cup of coffee per day correlated with a 22 percent decrease in the risk of developing alcohol-related cirrhosis. Two cups were associated with a 43 percent decrease in risk, and three cups added up to a 57 percent decrease in risk.

Four cups of coffee per day was found to correlate with a whopping 65 percent decrease in the risk of developing this condition.

The study authors summarized: “This meta-analysis suggests that increasing coffee consumption may substantially reduce the risk of cirrhosis.

This study did have some limitations. For one thing, only alcohol-related cirrhosis was analyzed. Cases of liver cirrhosis triggered by other factors, such as obesity, were not taken into account — future research shall have to address whether coffee offers the same protective potential in these cases.

Also, the type of coffee that the analysis participants drank was not studied in detail, so it is unclear from this study whether one type of coffee (or brewing preparation) may be more beneficial than other types of liver cirrhosis.

As to why coffee may offer such substantial protection to the liver, researchers are still not entirely sure. However, the authors of this study do hypothesize that the wealth of antioxidants found in coffee — which have significant anti-inflammatory properties — may be a factor.

So while it’s still obviously not safe to go binge drinking and expect coffee to shield your liver from all harm, we now have yet another reason to feel good about our morning brew! As far as brewing the healthiest cup of coffee, start with organic, fair-trade coffee beans, and skip the sugar and artificial creamers!

Black is great, organic cream or coconut milk makes a yummy addition, and if you like it sweeter, try some organic coconut crystals. For more coffee-boosting tips, check out these ways to supercharge your coffee and make your mornings shine!

If you had a rough night last night, you might see signs that your body is overly toxic – like headaches and nausea. See how to kick the hangover blues by giving your liver a little TLC.

Time can cure just about anything, but sometimes hangovers can be so bad you don’t want to wait it out. The trick is to aid your liver to help in the detoxification process, so you can go back to feeling like yourself again.

First, let’s understand what hangovers really are, and why you might be prone to waking up with one so often.

Why Hangovers Happen

A hangover is more than awful feelings. They are the experience of your body struggling to dispel the toxic overload from a night of alcohol, disrupted circadian rhythm and excess adrenal stimulation.

Worse than a headache and dehydration, a hangover is a sure sign that your immune system, digestive tract and organs are taking a hit. When the liver struggles to remove and filter out the excessive toxins from a night of too much fun, we experience blood sugar roller coaster rides and fatigue.

6 Natural Hangover Remedies

There are actually a few great alternatives to alcohol I’ll mention later on in this article. But before that, if you are reading this because you’re in the midst of it, here are a few tips on relieving the discomfort.

Because a hangover is essentially an overly toxic body, the real key to remedying a hangover is going to be supporting the detoxification process and aiding the liver.

Here are a few ways this can be achieved:

1. Skip the Aspirin

It’s common for someone to take an over-the-counter pain reliever when they are hungover; however, I do not recommend this. While they may provide some temporary relief, they actually cause damage to the liver in the long run. Additionally, while pain may subside, it is replaced with a lingering numbness, not a sense of revitalization and renewal.

Try this little exercise instead: Locate the pain or discomfort in your body, and instead of trying to mask it, do the opposite and confront it. For example, if your head hurts, actually focus on your head, bring attention there and see if you can actually feel it more.

This helps in two ways. First, by bringing your attention to the area you will actually promote blood flow there and support the body’s natural healing process. Second, by feeling it more consciously, you will have more of a sense of control over your situation.

There are also more natural painkillers you can use, such as fresh ginger and turmeric. Make a tea using these with lemon balm or kava kava as a base.

2. Hydrate, Hydrate, Hydrate

Dilution is the solution to pollution. As we learned, a hangover is just the body’s way of letting us know it is overburdened.

Water is nature’s solvent. Not only will drinking enough water help your body clear out toxins, it will also hydrate a dehydrated and hungover body.

If you’re sick of drinking plain water, try stirring up one of these 5 infused water recipes!

3. Drink Coconut Kefir

This probiotic beverage is made from raw coconut water. Because it is fermented, it contains little to no sugar, which makes it superior to plain raw coconut water for many reasons. Too much sugar can actually dehydrate the body and feed pathogens.

One of the first things to do when remedying a hangover is to get hydrated. From there, helping the liver detox is key. Probiotics are detoxifiers. They help the body eliminate toxins in the liver, kidneys and digestive tract. Getting probiotics in the form of a food is best.

Coconut kefir is an all-in-one remedy, since it holistically works to hydrate the body with its mineral content, aid detoxification with probiotics and also replenishes B vitamins, which are often lost during alcohol consumption/ This will help alkalize the body, provide powerful enzymes and probiotics, and support the liver and intestinal tract for detoxification.

Tip: For an even better hangover remedy, take a shot containing two ounces of coconut kefir and one ounce of wheatgrass.

4. Take a Detox Bath

Taking a hot bath with mineral salts or Epsom salt is a great way to aid the detoxification process. The magnesium in Epsom salt is a great natural muscle relaxer and also aids in the detoxification process. Light a few candles, dim the lights and play some relaxing music or even nature sounds to upgrade the experience.

Nothing heals quite like pure relaxation; this is why sleep is so healing! When we are resting, our body has its greatest opportunity to regain equilibrium and achieve homeostasis, during which the body releases self-repair enzymes and hormones.

Detox baths are great, too, because there are endless ways to upgrade their detoxification and healing properties.

Try soothing lavender essential oil, vitamin C powder, dried kelp powder, or add something spicy like ginger, cayenne powder, mustard or even wasabi. Anything hot or spicy will stimulate the detoxification process, increasing circulation and blood flow.

The liver is responsible for the blood and circulation. When the liver is detoxifying, it needs good blood flow to properly remove metabolic wastes.

5. Sweat it Out

If you have access to an infrared sauna, you could take this route for stimulating the detoxification process. This is helpful for a few reasons. The first is the obvious: sweating. This is a great way to help expel toxins, but the most effective way to do that is actually via the colon and lungs.

However, saunas are great, because they don’t just promote sweating, they get you breathing, too. A good session in a sauna is actually as good as decent exercise, and can help promote healing as well.

Tip: I would advise against using a sauna early in the day. Try one of the first few suggestions here, and then work your way up to the sauna for additional support.

6. Make a Healthy Swap

Finally, if you are going to drink, remember this rule of thumb: the poison is in the dose. Hard liquor and commercial beer are usually exceptionally high in alcohol and additional toxins; this is usually the cause of most of the destruction in drinking them.

Fortunately, there are some healthier options. For example, instead of beer, opt for a local kombucha beer. These are unpasteurized, raw and contain beneficial bacteria as well as B vitamins. Though they contain higher amounts of alcohol and should still be consumed conservatively, they are higher in quality, lower in toxins and provide some nutritional benefits, to boot.

You can also avoid the morning-after headache by reaching for a Paleo mocktail instead of your go-to cocktail. It’s healthier, and arguably tastier!

Eliminate Shingles Naturally – How Shingles Can Make You Blind (Strong Warning!)

Shingles are horrible. The itch, the pain, the discomfort, and sometimes the months of aftereffects.

Blindness is not on the risk list most of us make for ourselves.

But we should, according to a new study published in La Revue de Medecine Interne, or the French Journal of Internal Medicine. Blindness caused by shingles is much more common than you think.

In a review of the literature on the relationship between viral infections and eye diseases, they found that herpes viruses were the most common culprits, primarily because they reoccur over time.

Herpes simplex, the virus that remains dormant in our bodies and repeatedly reactivates to cause fever blisters, is the greatest risk because it reactivates so often.

But herpes zoster, the chickenpox virus that lies dormant in our bodies and later manifests as shingles, is not far behind.

Between 10% and 20% of all shingles cases occur in or near the eyes.

Because the virus travels along neural pathways, you can often feel it traveling in a line up or down your body on one side before a rash appears.

When it involves the eyes, the rash and blisters most commonly appear on your forehead, on the tip of your nose, and on your eyelids. This happens because some of the nerves that serve your eyes, and through which the virus can travel, run through these regions.

You may also experience headaches, eye pain, redness, eye watering, blurry vision, and sensitivity to light.

The danger of this condition is that it can cause inflammation of your cornea, a condition called keratitis, which happens to be the most common cause of blindness in the world.

If your cornea remains inflamed, its cells can start to die and scar tissue can form. Since the cornea is the transparent layer that forms the front of your eye, scar tissue causes your cornea to become opaque and will block light from passing through. This is when blindness occurs.

Uveitis is another common consequence of eye shingles. This is inflammation of the uvea, which is the pigmented layer of your eye that lies beneath your sclera and cornea, on top of your retina. Inflammation can cause scar tissue here too.

Your retina, which is the layer of light-sensitive cells at the back of your eye that trigger the nerve impulses sent to your brain, is also in the firing line.

If these cells become inflamed, they can also die, in a condition experts call retinal necrosis. This will cause you to lose your light vision.

Possibly because the nerves in and around your eyes are so close to your brain, the scientists found that eye shingles pose a stroke risk in the first year after the episode. During this period, people with eye shingles have a 4.3 times higher risk of stroke than other shingles patients.

If your immune system is weakened, you have an autoimmune disease, you are female, or you’re above 50 years of age, you carry the greatest risk that shingles will move into your eyes. But everyone is at great risk.

The bottom line is that you absolutely must treat your shingles as quickly as possible to avoid these and other dire consequences. Here is the exact protocol thousands of readers have used to eliminate their shingles in days…

Eliminate Shingles Naturally – Strange Shingles and Diabetes Connection

Shingles is not just a skin rash—it can become extremely painful with pain that lasts for years. As you know, it is caused by the varicella-zoster (chickenpox) virus.

Type-2 diabetes is an inflammatory disease that spikes blood sugar levels.

What could these two possibly have in common?

A lot, according to a new study published in the journal Diabetes Research and Clinical Practice. And treating one disease can help with the other.

In the past, numerous studies have established that diabetes can increase our risk of infectious diseases. In a 2018 edition of BMC Infectious Diseases, for example, a Canadian study concluded that people with diabetes were 21% more likely than people with healthy glucose processing to suffer from any infection—especially skin and soft tissue infections, as well as genitourinary (in the genital and urinary organs), gastrointestinal, and respiratory infections.

Shingles, which is caused by a reactivation of the herpes zoster virus that lies dormant in our bodies, is an infectious disease, so a lot of research has been done in the past on the relationship between diabetes and shingles.

This prompted a team of French researchers to do a review of the available literature to see whether diabetes poses an increased risk for shingles and shingles complications.

They searched medical databases for studies on the relationship between the two that were published between January 2000 and December 2018 in French and English. They found 16 relevant studies of sufficiently high quality.

Of these, 11 reported that people with diabetes were more likely to develop shingles as adults, although the exact magnitude of the risk differed between studies, with some studies finding an increased risk of 6% and others finding a risk elevated by 138%.

The shingles risk was higher for women than for men and increased with age.

Not only was the risk of shingles higher for people with diabetes, but their shingles also frequently presented with complications not experienced by people without diabetes.

Postherpetic neuralgia is the most common debilitating complication of shingles, a burning pain in the skin and nerve fibers that can last for years after the rash and blisters disappear.

The literature review also found that post-herpetic neuralgia was more common in diabetes patients than in the rest of the population.

But anyone who had chickenpox as a child can develop shingles. And if you have it (or the aftereffects), it’s more important to ask how you can heal. Fortunately, there are simple steps, explained here, that you can take to get rid of shingles in days…

And if you have type-2 diabetes, shingles is probably the least of your worries. Use these three steps to permanently reverse type-2 diabetes, starting today…

Eliminate Shingles Naturally – Curing This Disease Causes Shingles

The problem with modern medicine is that when doctors try to cure one disease with medication, it causes side effects that can lead to another disease.

According to a new study, this is exactly the case with shingles.

Shingles occurs when the herpes zoster virus, after lying dormant in your body, reactivates and causes painful blisters.

You are most at risk when your immune system is compromised, as it then cannot stop virus reactivation.

A new study in the journal Cancer has just shown how, for example, radiation therapy for cancer puts us at risk of shingles.

The researchers mined data from a Japanese institutional cancer registry and medical records between 2011 and 2015. They identified 17,655 cancer patients whom they divided into a radiation therapy group and a non-radiation therapy group.

They could then compare them to see who would go on to develop shingles.

In the first year after the beginning of the radiation therapy, 2.1% and 0.7% of radiation therapy and non-radiation therapy patients, respectively, developed shingles.

After two years these percentages were 3.0% versus 1.0%, after three years 3.4% versus 1.3%, after four years 4.1% versus 1.7%, and after five years 4.4% versus 1.8%.

This shows clearly that a larger percentage of radiation therapy patients suffered from shingles than the non-radiation therapy patients did.

The researchers concluded that radiation therapy patients were 2.5 times more likely to have shingles than the non-radiation therapy patients did.

When they looked at the location of the shingles outbreaks, they found that these were often at or very close to the site where the radiation therapy was applied.

But most people who develop shingles didn’t undergo radiation therapy. So there is another reason, more obvious and easier to manage to eliminate shingles, as I explain here…

What is the Best Way to Get Your Hypothyroidism Under Control?

The Real Cause of Hypothyroidism and How to Cure It - a new study published in the journal Minerva Endocrinologica that reveals the real cause of hypothyroidism—and with that, a simple way to get your hypothyroidism under control. Read on to find out more.

Click HERE to Discover How You Can Treat Hypothyroidism by Addressing Its Root Causes

Get Your Hypothyroidism Under Control – Horrifying Hypothyroidism and Heart Connection

Subclinical hypothyroidism is a mostly symptom-free condition in which your thyroid hormones test within the normal range while your thyroid-stimulating hormone is mildly elevated.

While it is tempting to think of this condition as not especially serious, a new article in the journal Current Pharmaceutical Design shows that it can have incredibly harmful consequences for your heart health.

The authors of this article reviewed the scientific literature on the relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and heart disease.

They found that it was surprisingly common in the general population, affecting 8% of women and 3% of men.

In studies on elderly people, they found the prevalence to be up to 12.5%.

Since thyroid hormones are involved in helping to regulate the heart’s electrophysiology and ability to contract, it is unsurprising that so many studies have found that people with hypothyroidism have an increased risk of heart disease.

But the research on subclinical hypothyroidism is no less alarming.

1. People with subclinical hypothyroidism are more likely than the rest of the population to suffer from coronary heart disease, especially those below age 65. This occurs when your arteries cannot deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to your heart because they are blocked by, for example, cholesterol or blood clots. It is the most common cause of death in the United States.

2. People with subclinical hypothyroidism have higher levels of fats in their blood, which are called lipids.

3. They are more likely than the rest of the population to suffer strokes.

4. They tend to have high blood pressure.

5. Heart failure is more common in people with subclinical hypothyroidism than in the general population, especially in those below age 65.

6. People who already suffer from heart failure have a smaller chance of being relatively healthy and surviving if they also have subclinical hypothyroidism.

7. They tend to suffer from endothelial dysfunction, which damages their blood vessels.

8. They are more likely to die of cardiovascular disease, and to die early of any cause, than those whose thyroid-stimulating hormone tests are normal.

9. While subclinical hyperthyroidism is definitely related to atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat, this relationship is still disputed for hypothyroidism.

These findings are alarming, especially because people with subclinical hypothyroidism often do not know that they have it, as it is symptom-free for the majority of people.

The good news is that it’s relatively simple to heal both hyperthyroidism and subclinical hyperthyroidism. To get your hypothyroidism under control, you just have to make a few simple lifestyle changes explained here…

Get Your Hypothyroidism Under Control – How Hypothyroidism Affects Your Children

Hypothyroidism can affect your mood, body weight, energy level, and many other health factors. But can it affect your children? Is that even possible?

Yes, says a new study published in the American Journal of Perinatology. And this may actually be one of the greatest problems with the younger generation.

Since the hormones secreted by our thyroids are important for our own growth and development, it is not difficult to understand why researchers wondered whether hypothyroidism diagnosed before or during pregnancy could affect the baby’s cognitive development. Previous research also shows that a mother’s thyroid hormones are extremely important for fetal development.

But there is another reason that this question is worth pursuing. Cognitive and neurodevelopmental disorders like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy are becoming increasingly common among children.

Many available studies examine what these children do differently from their predecessors. But maybe a better question is what their parents are doing differently, or how the parents differ from their predecessors, especially mothers.

In this new study, the researchers focused on ADHD because this is by far the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in the United States.

The scientists collected data from southern California hospitals, and the medical information for the mothers and children was recorded together. The children were observed for at least 17 years, which gave enough information for a thorough study.

The sample contained both males and females and people of different ethnicities. Overall, 329,157 mother-child pairs were examined.

They discovered some interesting facts.

1. When hypothyroidism was diagnosed prior to pregnancy, the offspring were 27% more likely to have ADHD than those of mothers without hypothyroidism.

2. When hypothyroidism was diagnosed within the first three months of pregnancy, the offspring were 28% more likely to have ADHD.

3. For children who were born pre-term, their risk of ADHD increased by 43%, but only if the mothers’ hypothyroidism was diagnosed prior to their pregnancies.

4. For boys, the increased risk was 26%, and for girls it was 19%.

5. The risk for Hispanic children increased by 45%, the highest of all ethnic groups.

The risk for white children whose mothers had hypothyroidism increased by 22%.

Other demographic factors like age during pregnancy, household income, education, employment, etc. did not have an effect.

The mothers’ thyroid hormone levels also had no effect after the first trimester of pregnancy, probably because fetuses start to produce their own thyroid hormones by then.

But the most important thing now is to get your hypothyroidism under control and get off those pills. And you can get your hypothyroidism under control, by following the simple lifestyle suggestions listed here…

Get Your Hypothyroidism Under Control – The Real Cause of Hypothyroidism and How to Cure It

I clench when I hear medical people say there is no cure for hypothyroidism.

The reason they say it, of course, is that they have no idea what causes it. So how can you cure something when you don’t know what’s wrong in the first place?

So I welcome a new study published in the journal Minerva Endocrinologica that reveals the real cause of hypothyroidism—and with that, a simple cure.

Oxidative stress is a common concept that is now included in almost everyone’s vocabulary. Research certainly shows that it is involved in most serious chronic modern-day diseases.

The new study shows that hypothyroidism and other thyroid conditions involve a significant amount of oxidative stress.

Reactive oxygen species are molecules that steal electrons from healthy tissue. That formerly healthy tissue then also lacks electrons and must steal them from neighboring tissue, that must then steal from other healthy tissue too. If this chain reaction of reactive oxygen species stealing electrons from neighboring tissue runs rampant in your body, it can lead to an enormous amount of cell damage and cell death.

Antioxidants, on the other hand, are molecules that have electrons to donate to whichever reactive oxygen species need to steal some. This way, they prevent cell damage because they can donate the electrons that cells have lost and need back.

Cell and even organ destruction occur when too many cells are damaged and die because of a lack of electrons—in other words, because of oxidative stress.

The authors of the new study wanted to prove that this was the case for thyroid diseases.

They were specifically interested in autoimmune thyroiditis, which is inflammation of the thyroid gland brought about when your immune system attacks it in error.

Autoimmune thyroiditis can do serious damage to the thyroid gland and can cause either hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone) or hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone).

Their study was a literature review of studies that investigated the relationship between oxidative stress and autoimmune thyroiditis.

From the existing research, they learned that oxidative stress was definitely involved in autoimmune thyroiditis, when it coincided with both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.
