Subclinical hypothyroidism is a mostly symptom-free condition in which your thyroid hormones test within the normal range while your thyroid-stimulating hormone is mildly elevated.

While it is tempting to think of this condition as not especially serious, a new article in the journal Current Pharmaceutical Design shows that it can have incredibly harmful consequences for your heart health.

The authors of this article reviewed the scientific literature on the relationship between subclinical hypothyroidism and heart disease.

They found that it was surprisingly common in the general population, affecting 8% of women and 3% of men.

In studies on elderly people, they found the prevalence to be up to 12.5%.

Since thyroid hormones are involved in helping to regulate the heart’s electrophysiology and ability to contract, it is unsurprising that so many studies have found that people with hypothyroidism have an increased risk of heart disease.

But the research on subclinical hypothyroidism is no less alarming.

1. People with subclinical hypothyroidism are more likely than the rest of the population to suffer from coronary heart disease, especially those below age 65. This occurs when your arteries cannot deliver enough oxygen-rich blood to your heart because they are blocked by, for example, cholesterol or blood clots. It is the most common cause of death in the United States.

2. People with subclinical hypothyroidism have higher levels of fats in their blood, which are called lipids.

3. They are more likely than the rest of the population to suffer strokes.

4. They tend to have high blood pressure.

5. Heart failure is more common in people with subclinical hypothyroidism than in the general population, especially in those below age 65.

6. People who already suffer from heart failure have a smaller chance of being relatively healthy and surviving if they also have subclinical hypothyroidism.

7. They tend to suffer from endothelial dysfunction, which damages their blood vessels.

8. They are more likely to die of cardiovascular disease, and to die early of any cause, than those whose thyroid-stimulating hormone tests are normal.

9. While subclinical hyperthyroidism is definitely related to atrial fibrillation, or irregular heartbeat, this relationship is still disputed for hypothyroidism.

These findings are alarming, especially because people with subclinical hypothyroidism often do not know that they have it, as it is symptom-free for the majority of people.

Yes, says a new study published in the American Journal of Perinatology. And this may actually be one of the greatest problems with the younger generation.

Since the hormones secreted by our thyroids are important for our own growth and development, it is not difficult to understand why researchers wondered whether hypothyroidism diagnosed before or during pregnancy could affect the baby’s cognitive development. Previous research also shows that a mother’s thyroid hormones are extremely important for fetal development.

But there is another reason that this question is worth pursuing. Cognitive and neurodevelopmental disorders like attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), autism, epilepsy, and cerebral palsy are becoming increasingly common among children.

Many available studies examine what these children do differently from their predecessors. But maybe a better question is what their parents are doing differently, or how the parents differ from their predecessors, especially mothers.

In this new study, the researchers focused on ADHD because this is by far the most common neurodevelopmental disorder in the United States.

The scientists collected data from southern California hospitals, and the medical information for the mothers and children was recorded together. The children were observed for at least 17 years, which gave enough information for a thorough study.

The sample contained both males and females and people of different ethnicities. Overall, 329,157 mother-child pairs were examined.

They discovered some interesting facts.

1. When hypothyroidism was diagnosed prior to pregnancy, the offspring were 27% more likely to have ADHD than those of mothers without hypothyroidism.

2. When hypothyroidism was diagnosed within the first three months of pregnancy, the offspring were 28% more likely to have ADHD.

3. For children who were born pre-term, their risk of ADHD increased by 43%, but only if the mothers’ hypothyroidism was diagnosed prior to their pregnancies.

4. For boys, the increased risk was 26%, and for girls it was 19%.

5. The risk for Hispanic children increased by 45%, the highest of all ethnic groups.

The risk for white children whose mothers had hypothyroidism increased by 22%.

Other demographic factors like age during pregnancy, household income, education, employment, etc. did not have an effect.

The mothers’ thyroid hormone levels also had no effect after the first trimester of pregnancy, probably because fetuses start to produce their own thyroid hormones by then.

Oxidative stress is a common concept that is now included in almost everyone’s vocabulary. Research certainly shows that it is involved in most serious chronic modern-day diseases.

The new study shows that hypothyroidism and other thyroid conditions involve a significant amount of oxidative stress.

Reactive oxygen species are molecules that steal electrons from healthy tissue. That formerly healthy tissue then also lacks electrons and must steal them from neighboring tissue, that must then steal from other healthy tissue too. If this chain reaction of reactive oxygen species stealing electrons from neighboring tissue runs rampant in your body, it can lead to an enormous amount of cell damage and cell death.

Antioxidants, on the other hand, are molecules that have electrons to donate to whichever reactive oxygen species need to steal some. This way, they prevent cell damage because they can donate the electrons that cells have lost and need back.

Cell and even organ destruction occur when too many cells are damaged and die because of a lack of electrons—in other words, because of oxidative stress.

The authors of the new study wanted to prove that this was the case for thyroid diseases.

They were specifically interested in autoimmune thyroiditis, which is inflammation of the thyroid gland brought about when your immune system attacks it in error.

Autoimmune thyroiditis can do serious damage to the thyroid gland and can cause either hypothyroidism (too little thyroid hormone) or hyperthyroidism (too much thyroid hormone).

Their study was a literature review of studies that investigated the relationship between oxidative stress and autoimmune thyroiditis.

From the existing research, they learned that oxidative stress was definitely involved in autoimmune thyroiditis, when it coincided with both hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism.

Brazilian researchers conducted a literature review of previously published studies on the relationship between iodine deficiency, hypothyroidism, and the health of both the expectant mother and the fetus.

The reason why this is important is because pregnant women are vulnerable to an iodine deficiency precisely because so much of their iodine is transferred to their fetuses and because much of it is excreted in their urine.

Our bodies do not make iodine, so to avoid hypothyroidism they must consume enough iodine in their diet.

Moreover, a third of the world population is at risk of iodine deficiency because of low iodine in the soil (including most of Asia and Europe), and because of an excess of highly processed nutritionally poor foods in our diets.

Researchers have known for some time that expectant mothers with an iodine deficiency and hypothyroidism are at risk of miscarriage and that their babies have an increased likelihood of stunted growth or slow neurological development.

From the literature review, the scientists found that iodine-deficient women in their first trimester were at risk of diabetes, placental abruption (when the placenta that feeds the baby partly or completely detaches from the wall of the uterus), oxidative stress, and high blood pressure. Their children were also at risk of slow cognitive development and below average intelligence.

Women who were iodine deficient in their second and third trimesters were at higher risk of producing premature babies and babies with low birth weight. They also carry the same risks to their own health as those with an iodine deficiency in the first trimester.

The most important and promising finding was that the negative consequences of first trimester iodine deficiency can be reversed by increasing iodine intake. The consequences of second trimester iodine deficiency were partly reversible, while those of third trimester deficiency were found to be irreversible.

Luckily, it is not difficult to prevent an iodine deficiency and the consequent hypothyroidism and other health problems. All you need to do is to consume enough of this mineral in your diet.

1. Eat lots of shrimp, tuna, and cod. If you are vegan or vegetarian, seaweeds like wakame, nori, and kombu are equally good.

2. Milk, yogurt, and eggs are not only tasty, but iodine rich.

3. Stack your diet with fruits like prunes, bananas, and strawberries.

4. Iodized salt is probably the main source of iodine in most people’s diet.

 Because the thyroid hormone is so important for regulating energy, the symptoms of hypothyroidism are varied and leave very few of your body’s functions unaffected.

IntechOpen has just published an article showing that two plants can restore thyroid hormone, as well as undo some of the antioxidant damage in the brain that results from hypothyroidism.

The researchers first induced hypothyroidism in female adult rats through a combination of injecting an anti-hyperthyroidism drug and some carefully selected hormones that interfere with the function of the thyroid gland.

They then divided the rats into several groups that received either a placebo (fake treatment), no treatment, or different doses of ginseng and barley supplements.

The ginseng was acquired as a dried root, after which the powder was dissolved in water. The barley was also soaked in water. The rats remained on these treatments for four weeks.

The poor rats were sacrificed after the study so that the researchers could examine their brains to compare the supplement treatment groups with the placebo and no-treatment groups to determine the differences in thyroid and brain function.

The barley increased the amount of thyroid hormone and the transporting proteins in the bodies of the rats, primarily through its high iron and phytosterol contents. It was also able to restore estradiol levels in these female rats.

Through its high tryptophan, phenylalanine, and folic acid contents, and again through the phytosterol it contains, barley could also reactivate some of the neurotransmitters that had become inactive in the brain because of the hypothyroidism, such as NE, DA, and 5-HT. These neurotransmitters are responsible for relieving stress and improving mood and depression.

Ginseng also improved levels of thyroid hormone and their carrying proteins, reduced some harmful hormones responsible for hypothyroidism, reduced some antioxidant chemicals in the blood and brain, and reactivated neurotransmitters in the brain responsible for mood and cognitive function.

As such, it seems that barley and ginseng can both help reverse the damage brought on by hypothyroidism.

But rats are not humans, and barley and ginseng are not enough to completely cure hypothyroidism.

Many people start complaining of an inactive thyroid and the symptoms of hypothyroidism as they age.

This has given rise to a situation where a specific drug to treat hypothyroid has become one of the most commonly prescribed drugs for elderly people in the United States.

But a study in the journal Annals of Internal Medicine now reveals that this drug has no health benefit.

On the contrary, it has been proven to cause stroke and heart attack.

Researchers from Denmark, Switzerland, Scotland, and the United States observed 638 people aged at least 65 years who had subclinical hypothyroidism.

This is a condition in which your thyroid hormones still test approximately normal, but your thyroid-stimulating hormone is too high. It means that your thyroid gland needs more stimulation than usual to produce the same amount of thyroid hormones as it should, and is often a precursor to full-blown hypothyroidism.

The most common symptoms of this condition are depression fatigue, muscle weakness, memory loss, and dry skin and hair.

The participants in this study had their thyroid-stimulating hormones tested and were diagnosed with subclinical hypothyroidism if they tested high twice, three months apart.

In the following year, participants received either L-Thyroxine (also known as Levothyroxine) or a sham drug (placebo) to see whether the two groups differed in symptom improvement.

By the end of this year, there was no difference between the two groups, suggesting that the drug made no difference to the condition at all.

The researchers even identified what they called a high-symptom burden group, participants who had the lowest quality of life, and the weakest hand strength. These are presumably the people who would grab at doctor’s drug prescriptions first, as their symptoms are the worst.

But even in this group, there was no difference between the drugs and the placebo.

As a result, the authors recommended against routine L-thyroxine use for elderly adults with subclinical hypothyroidism.

L-thyroxine or Levothyroxine is a form of the thyroid hormone thyroxine (T4) that is artificially manufactured in the laboratory.

Previous studies have revealed that this drug can cause stroke and heart attack, so since it’s completely useless for hypothyroidism, it’s best avoided.

People with a vitamin D deficiency are more likely to have autoimmune diseases like rheumatoid arthritis, multiple sclerosis, and type 1 diabetes.

So, the researchers expected to find that people with hypothyroidism caused by inflammation had lower vitamin D levels than those with non-inflammatory hypothyroidism.

But no—both groups tended to have too little vitamin D.

This indicates that no matter your type of hypothyroidism, you should make sure to get enough vitamin D.

Taking vitamin D supplements most likely will not be enough to cure hypothyroidism.

Cure Your Hypothyroidism by Tackling its Underlying Causes – This Common Hypothyroidism Treatment Kills

Sometimes the cure is worse than the disease.

There have been many cases where the actual medical treatment to “cure” one condition has led to a multitude of other health problems.

Essentially doctors treat one illness, only for it to be replaced by another health problem.

According to a recent study prepared for the annual meeting of the Endocrine Society, there is one treatment for hypothyroidism that causes early death in 90% of those who receive it.

Thyroid hormone replacement therapy is almost universally accepted to be the best treatment for hypothyroidism and it is often started before people start showing any symptoms of an underactive thyroid.

This new study has found this to be a huge mistake, as this treatment has been linked to many premature deaths in adults.

Your thyroid gland secretes a hormone called thyroxine (T4). To produce this hormone, your thyroid gland needs to be stimulated by the thyroid-stimulating hormone (TSH).

If doctors detect low levels of T4, they prescribe a synthetic version of it called levothyroxine to act as a T4 replacement.

But even when they find that you have normal T4 levels, they often prescribe this hormone replacement therapy, because elevated TSH suggests that your thyroid is underactive.

Scientists analyzed information of 1,054 elderly adults. This information included T4 and TSH readings.

They calculated the risk of death in the participants compared to those on thyroid hormone replacement therapy with their peers.

Those receiving therapy were 60 percent more likely to die early. This is alarming, but it gets worse.

When they compared people with normal T4 scores and normal TSH scores to people with normal T4 but elevated TSH scores who were receiving hormone replacement therapy, they found that people in the latter group were 90 percent more likely to die early.

Hormone replacement therapy was bad for people with hypothyroidism, but it was even worse for people who were treated prematurely.

These findings suggest two things.

1. Thyroid hormone replacement therapy increases your risk of death.

2. Elevated TSH scores as we age are normal and not a sign of hypothyroidism.

This is the reason why it is better to follow a healthy lifestyle to ensure that your body can balance its hormones naturally.
