If your health is suffering, your gut may be to blame. Check out this list of the four most common gut problems people face – and how to fix them.

Gut health might be trending, but it’s certainly not a new concept. Hippocrates, the father of Western medicine, once noted that all disease begins in the gut. Yet somehow we’ve lost sight of this ancient wisdom, and chronic diseases are at an all-time high.

Science repeatedly demonstrates the importance of a healthy gut for preventing disease. Interestingly, people are still often surprised to learn that their chronic disease stems from an underlying unhealthy gastrointestinal system.

Adding insult to injury, the symptoms of an unhealthy gut are often confused for other seemingly unrelated conditions like skin problems, allergiesautoimmunityobesity, chronic diseases, inflammation, dental problems, body pain, joint problemsinfertility, and more.

Unraveling your own personal gut problems can be a little bit like opening Pandora’s box, but it doesn’t have to be that way. Join my 30DC: 30 Day Paleo Challenge and I’ll help you to start reclaiming your gut health today!

How to Fix the Four Most Common Gut Problems?

Everyone’s gut is a little different. In fact, your gut is as unique as your fingerprint! However, there are common conditions and imbalances that constitute the majority of modern gut health issues.

Here are the four most common gut problems that people suffer from, how to tell if that’s what’s ailing you, and steps you can take to get your gut health back on track.

1. Leaky Gut

What is it?

Leaky gut is when your intestines develop tiny holes that create a passage for gunk (like bacteria and undigested food) to be released into the bloodstream. When these foreign particles enter the body, the immune system produces inflammation as a response.

What it can lead to

It is theorized that a leaky gut can lead to several different symptoms, conditions, and disease states that are often unrelated to the gastrointestinal system, such as:

You might be experiencing any of the below conditions

Common causes of leaky gut

The Fix

Cleaning up your diet is super important. Try my 30-day Paleo challenge to reset your system and start healing your leaky gut. You can also make sure you’re getting plenty of nutrients and herbs that can repair the gut wall, such as glutamine, aloe vera, slippery elm, deglycyrrhizinated licorice, marshmallow root, and bone broth.

2. Dysbiosis

What is it?

Dysbiosis is an imbalance in the gut flora, which is made up of trillions of organisms. There should be mostly beneficial strains of these critters living within us, and when the bad guys outnumber the good, troubles can arise.

What it can lead to

You might be experiencing

Brain fog, depression, anxiety, and mood swings

Cravings for sugar or carbs

Dental problems

Digestive problems, like diarrhea, constipationbloating or gas

Fatigue

Skin conditions

Common causes of dysbiosis

  • Poor digestion (see the next gut problem)
  • Eating too many carbs
  • Overuse of antibiotics
  • Not enough fermented and cultured foods in the diet
  • Lack of diet variety

The Fix

The fix is often two-part. First and foremost, a change in diet is almost always warranted. You might want to start with a Paleo diet, then move to a low/no-carbohydrate diet, low FODMAP diet, or GAPS diet if gut problems persist.

The second step involves treating the underlying infection (either with herbal or pharmaceutical antibiotics). Specific GI testing or organic acid testing can help your doctor identify specific microbial overgrowths to direct treatment.

3. Impaired Digestion or Absorption

What is it?

Digestion and absorption are the two main roles of the gastrointestinal (GI) system. The GI tract runs from your mouth to “down south”, and gut problems can arise anywhere along this line.

Common GI issues include hypochlorhydria (low stomach acid production) which results in undigested proteins. Stomach acid is needed to release the bound minerals inside those proteins so our bodies can absorb them.

After digestion in the stomach is complete, food is passed to the small intestine where it’s met by digestive enzymes from the pancreas and bile from the gallbladder, which are needed to finalize the digestion of food.

If there is a deficiency of pancreatic enzymes or bile, food will not be completely broken down and as a result, may pass through your system intact, leading to malabsorption.

What it can lead to

You might be experiencing

  • Incomplete digestion (you might see undigested food or oils in your stool, diarrhea or constipation)
  • Weakness and fatigue
  • Sore tongue
  • Heartburn
  • Gas, bloatingcramping, stomach pains, and other digestive symptoms

Common causes of impaired digestion and absorption

  • Not chewing your food thoroughly
  • Eating too quickly, when stressed, or while standing up
  • Chronic stress
  • Antibiotic use
  • Conditions such as Celiac disease, Crohn’s disease, and others
  • Motility problems (food is moving either too quickly, or too slowly through your GI system)

The Fix

Chew your food thoroughly – especially those sweet potatoes! The majority of digestion, especially carbs, takes place in the mouth.

Sit down, relax, and take your time when eating.

Don’t drink liquids with meals, as it can dilute stomach acid.

Support stomach acid production by taking raw apple cider vinegar or herbal bitters just before meals.

Try supplementing with digestive enzymes, ox bile, liver support, and other supportive nutrients and herbals.

Keep your stress levels low. Try yogameditation, or a daily walk.

4. Histamine Intolerance

What is it?

Histamine is a natural compound in the body released during allergic and inflammatory reactions. Certain foods also contain small amounts of histamine, like aged cheeses, vinegar, chocolate, beans, shellfish, alcohol, fermented and pickled foods, and many others.

When too much histamine accumulates in the body and is unable to break down, it can cause problems like skin conditions and headaches.

Histamine intolerance affects a little more than one percent of the population, with studies finding that it mostly affects middle-aged women.

Some people’s histamine intolerance is related to genetic issues, such as DAO deficiency. DAO (diamine oxidase) is an enzyme in the body that breaks down histamine. Some people do not produce enough of this enzyme; similar to those with lactose intolerance who do not produce enough of the lactase enzyme.

The only way to know for sure if you have a histamine sensitivity is by conducting an elimination diet by avoiding histamine-containing foods to see if symptoms improve.

Be aware that the Paleo diet may not be appropriate for people with histamine intolerance as many Paleo foods contain natural histamine.

What it can lead to

The condition of histamine intolerance can lead to skin problems, digestive issues, and even mental health issues. These symptoms are generally unrecognized by the medical community as related to histamine.

You might be experiencing

  • Skin conditions, like hives or itchy skin
  • Headaches or migraines
  • Anxiety
  • Food allergies
  • Allergies or sinus issues
  • Nausea
  • Heart racing
  • Vertigo
  • Breathing problems
  • Difficulty sleeping
  • Fatigue
  • Tissue swelling or inflammation
  • High or low blood pressure
  • Digestive issues

Common causes of histamine intolerance

  • DAO (diamine oxidase) enzyme deficiency
  • Dysbiosis or SIBO
  • Poor digestive function
  • Histamine-rich foods
  • Gastrointestinal disorders like leaky gut and IBD
  • Certain medications

The Fix

A low-histamine diet is at the forefront of treatment for the condition. This involves removing high histamine foods and focusing on food preparation methods that minimize histamine production.

An elimination diet can be particularly helpful to identify triggers that are often not obvious or easily identifiable. Treating underlying digestive issues and dysbiosis is also critical.

If you have a DAO deficiency, you may benefit from supplementing with the DAO enzyme before eating histamine-rich meals.

What the Gut!?

By now you might be thinking: “What the gut!? Is having a healthy gut rarer than gold? Why are so many people suffering from an unhealthy gut?” While the answer is complex, it can basically be simplified down to this: modern living.

This world we live in is full of chemicals, processed and refined foods, GMOs and sugar in every possible form. We’re not getting enough fiber, we lack variety in our diets, and eat too quickly. We’re using antibacterial cleaners in our homes and antibiotics and countless other medications to treat the symptoms of our medical problems.

On top of that, we’re under a relentless amount of stress and don’t get enough exercise or interaction with our environment. Plus, we’re sleeping poorly! All of these factors (and many more) can quite literally change the composition of our microbiome.

Over the course of many years, this neglectful behavior towards our bodies can send us into a serious state of imbalance, predisposing us to an unhealthy gut and subsequently a number of chronic diseases.

Before you throw in the towel, you should realize that having a healthy gut is not as difficult as you might think. A return to an ancestral way of living and eating is ultimately the solution to achieving and maintaining a healthy gut and optimal health.

Heal Thy Gut

The good news is that your gut can heal, and in fact, the body spends a large amount of energy to completely replace the gut lining every week or so.

Our bodies are quite literally designed to fix our gut lining, but if we are continually exposing ourselves to gut irritants, we will be perpetually stuck in a battle state.

When given the right ingredients, the gut will heal. In order to create space for this healing to occur, we must remove the triggers that are contributing to our gut problems in the first place.

How do I know? Well, I lived through this myself. After being diagnosed with multiple autoimmune diseases, I made the connection between diet, lifestyle, and disease and immediately turned my health around to put my conditions into remission. I did this by eating a varied Paleo diet avoiding the main triggers of my leaky gut like grains, dairy, and legumes.

Get Hard and Stay Hard as Long as You Want – ED Caused by This Sexual Activity

ED is most often caused by either emotional factors like stress or anxiety or by physical issues such as plaque buildup in the arteries.

But there is another problem that can cause permanent ED if you don’t take immediate action when it happens.

And this one thing happens while making love.

Repeated studies have shown that men are at serious risk of erectile dysfunction if they delay a visit to the emergency room for more than 72 hours after fracturing their penis. Especially if they’re over 50.

You may be asking, “A fractured penis, is that a joke?”

No, it’s more common than you may think.

And while men are often worried about injuries caused by blunt force trauma, as in being hit or kicked, sexual intercourse is by far the most common cause, with 76.5% of penile fractures caused by sex.

A team of researchers surveyed 90 men with an average age of 39 who had suffered penile fractures. They published their results in the International Journal of Impotence Research.

Of those cases, 41% were caused by the doggy style position, 25.5% by the man-on-top (missionary) position, and 10% by the woman-on-top position.

Masturbation, or penile manipulation, did not pose a significant risk.

The missionary and doggy styles caused the worst injuries, and thereby pose the biggest risk for developing ED.

This does not mean you have to cut these sexual activities from your repertoire, but they probably require that you keep just enough of your wits to remain in control of them.

To put it bluntly, penile fractures happen when the penis is shoved into something hard, causing it to break.

During both missionary and doggy styles, it is possible for the penis to slip out and be shoved into the bed, table, chair, or wherever you happen to be.

Doggy style poses the extra risk that you can aim poorly and shove the penis into the woman’s pelvic bone.

Woman-on-top is risky when she suddenly leans forward or backward, bending the penis unnaturally quickly and causing it to break.

So how do you know when your penis has fractured so you can seek immediate medical help to reduce your chance of ED?

Luckily, it is rather obvious. If you hear a cracking sound during sexual activity, your penis appears to be unnaturally bent, there is a lot of blood around, and you suffer severe pain, swelling, and a sudden loss of erection, an immediate hospital visit is crucial.

Luckily, erectile dysfunction most often has less painful causes and is easier to cure.

The home exercises found here permanently heal erectile dysfunction and help you get hard and stay hard for as long as you want…

Get Hard and Stay Hard as Long as You Want – This Is What Happens Immediately Switching to Organic

Eating organic is expensive and often difficult to manage (you’re not spending as much time at McDonald’s). But is it worth it?

A new study from The Swedish Environmental Research Institute put this question to the test, having a family of five switched completely over to organic.

What happened immediately was astonishing!

This was a typical Swedish family who very rarely ate organic. But with the support of The Swedish Environmental Research Institute and a supermarket chain, for two weeks they switched everything to organic.

That included food, cleaning products, all hygiene products, and even the father’s chewing tobacco.

Before switching, urine examples were taken daily, for a week, from every member of the family. The same procedure continued during the two weeks’ organic.

In the beginning, and unbelievable amount of pesticides and other chemicals were found in the samples. That included: 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (herbicides), Atrazine (herbicide), Boscalid (fungacide), Chlormequat chloride (CCC) and mepequat (growth inhibitors), Chlorpyrifos (insecticide), Ethylenebisdithiocarbamates (fungicide), MPCA (herbicide), Pyrethroids, such as cypermethrin and esfenvalerate (insecticides), Propamocarb (fungicide), Thiabendazole, iprodione, diuron, vinclozolin (fungicides).

Long story short, after only two weeks of using nothing but organic, most of these chemicals had completely disappeared.

Now authorities claim that the amount of each chemical was never above risk level.

But there is no long term study taking into account the combined amount of so many different chemicals and what they will do.

I believe these are major causes of many cancers as well as inflammation diseases such as arthritis, type 2 diabetes and cardiovascular diseases (high blood pressure).

Get Hard and Stay Hard as Long as You Want – Not only that, reliable studies have shown that many of the commonly used or “normal” chemicals cause erectile dysfunction.

Get Hard and Stay Hard as Long as You Want – ED Medications Cause This Deadly Disease (what to do instead)

What is the use of managing ED if you’re dead?

That’s a pretty drastic statement. But according to a new research from New York University, the most common ED medications will drastically increase your risk of developing one of the deadliest diseases there is.

The ironic fact is that it’s easy to overcome ED without these medications and therefore avoid the deadly disease altogether.

Phosphodiesterase type 5 inhibitors (PDE5), the active ingredient in Viagra, Cialis, Levitra and most other erectile dysfunction medications, significantly increases your risk of malignant melanoma.

And with both erectile dysfunction and malignant melanoma being on the rise, you can’t afford to take this risk.

The stats for 4,065 Swedish men suffering melanoma and 20,325 cancer-free Swedish men was analyzed.

11% of the melanoma group had taken PDE5 type erectile dysfunction drugs, but only 8% of the cancer free group. This means taking these drugs can increase your risk of melanoma up to 30%.

Pretty scary!

This is only one of myriad potential risks and side effects of erectile dysfunction medications; I hope all men will stop taking them. Plus, popping a pill every time you want to have sex is no fun.

Paleo Protein Bars: What’s the Honest Truth?

Do you travel often? If so, you might have some trouble finding high quality Paleo protein bars to take on the road with you. But have no fear – today we will review the nutrition of all sorts of Paleo bars available on the market.

Now, there is certainly truth in the notion that a processed food bar wouldn’t be strictly Paleo – but there is also a need in today’s world to have some sort of portable option. And ultimately, these bars are a great alternative to stopping at a fast food restaurant.

Paleo protein bars are great for traveling, as an emergency snack – or at any other time when you may not have extra minutes to prepare a whole meal!

Benefits of Paleo Protein Bars

In general, there are some serious advantages to not having to cart around a chicken leg or grass-fed steak in order to eat healthier. No doubt we all have times in life (traveling, meetings, running late, etc.) when we simply cannot get to a hearty home-cooked meal.

These bars help you to stay Paleo – even when stuck on an airplane for 10 hours, or in a hotel room in the middle of nowhere. All-too-often I have found myself stuck between the choices of a fast food hamburger, or a greasy slice of pizza. Not ideal.

Paleo bars have a richer nutritional profile than most of the other processed food bars out there. Being gluten-free and dairy-free, these bars won’t push you off the healthy path you’ve carved out for yourself. And as the Paleo movement moves more into the mainstream – these bars are becoming much more widely available.

Protein Bar Products

Now, we move on to the individual brands. Remember – you can also make your own Paleo protein bars (or Muscle-Building Cocoa Balls). In fact, this may be more cost effective, if you are really looking to consume protein bars on a regular basis.

Having the occasional Paleo bar is great when you’re in a rush but shouldn’t start replacing real, whole food on a regular basis. Remember – that’s ultimately why these products are here – to help you when you don’t have time to bake or cook. So without further ado, here are some of the best Paleo protein bars!

RXBars

Arguably the most well-known of the “Paleo” bars, RXBars are a staple among the CrossFit community. With minimal ingredients, “no BS”, and a delicious taste, these bars are hard to beat.

There are no GMOs, no dairy, no gluten, and no soy – in any of the RXBar flavors. Packed with 12 grams of protein in each bar, RXBars are a great way to get quality protein on the run.

For those that want a sweeter taste than beef jerky, RXBars should be your go-to traveling choice. My personal favorite is the blueberry flavor. Dig in!

NoGii

NoGii has a wide variety of protein bars, but their Paleo choice is truly best. With a huge amount of flavor, and large availability at many different chain stores, these are a great choice – no matter where you find yourself.

Another added benefit of these bars, is the complete lack of high fructose corn syrup. Most comparable bars of these quality, are loaded with tons of artificial ingredients and sweeteners.

Yuck. Don’t fall into that trap. NoGii Paleo bars are ultimately a perfect gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free choice. Find some, and then buy them in bulk!

The Paleo Diet Bar

Relatively newer on the marketplace, is The Paleo Diet Bar. These bars are even officially endorsed by Dr. Loren Cordain himself. With no gluten, dairy, soy or preservatives, they fit the exact mold of a perfect Paleo choice. They are, however, a little bit harder to find. So if you’re looking to purchase these bars, it’s best to order them online.

These Paleo Diet bars are also a little bit higher in calories and sugar, so they should be consumed in 2 servings, if you’re looking to keep these elements of your diet in check. I personally like the cranberry almond flavor best, but there is also the tasty cinnamon raisin flavor. Best of all, the newest formulation of The Paleo Diet Bar has 17 grams of protein – not too shabby!

Rise’s Almond Honey Protein Bar

Even though it is less well known, Rise’s Almond Honey Protein Bar has only 3 ingredients: almonds, honey and whey protein isolate. Hard to argue with simplicity! Whey makes these bars extremely rich for muscle-building, with 20 grams of protein.

If you’re okay with the whey protein, you’ll find that this hidden gem is one of the top bar choices in terms of protein to sugar ratio. With only 3 ingredients, and coming in at just under 300 calories – these bars are also great for buying in bulk.

If you’re extra sensitive to dairy, you may want to pass on these. And if you’re not extra sensitive to dairy? It’s definitely hard to beat the simplicity of just three ingredients. Even some of the best Paleo bars have way more than 3 simple ingredients. So make sure you give these bars a try.

AMRAP’s Refuel Bar

AMRAP’s Refuel Bar is another newer entry into the marketplace, and possesses a slightly different formula than most Paleo bars. With 15 grams of protein, these are definitely a great choice for a healthy snack on the go.

AMRAP’s Refuel bars also offer a solid dose of healthy fat in the form of coconut. Yum. And as the name suggests, it may be best to consume these bars right around your post-workout window.

While I’m personally a fan of the almond and honey flavor, there are also 2 other flavors to choose from, so try all three, to decide which one you like best.

EPIC Bars

This brings us to our last item to review today, EPIC Bars. These fan favorites offer a completely different take on the classic protein bar formula.

EPIC Bars contain grass-fed beef – making them much closer to a portable steak than a protein bar! In terms of taste, these bars are similar to beef jerky, only softer. The bacon flavor is by far my personal favorite.

Recently, EPIC has come out with EPIC bites, EPIC bits and a ‘hunt and harvest’ mix – giving you even more delicious options when traveling. If you’re looking for a protein bar that’s lower in sugar – and a little stricter Paleo – EPIC Bar is definitely the right choice for you.

Check out their nutrition facts below!

The Bottom Line

While real food is always best, no one is perfectly Paleo, all of the time. The bars listed in this article are great for airplanes, long road trips – or even crunch times when you don’t have a snack or meal ready.

But none of these bars contain a substantial amount of vegetables, either – so make sure they do not become the sole backbone of your diet. In practice, I keep a good selection of different bars in my pantry, so – in case of emergencies – I’m always prepared.
