What is the Best Way to Treat Vertigo without Drugs?

A study performed by Taiwanese researchers suggested that a big part of people who visited the emergency department did so with dizziness or vertigo. Often with broken limbs after suffering a fall. To treat vertigo, people are usually told to take vestibular suppressants or other drugs and sent home to cope with it on their own. This seemed quite a cruel way to treat vertigo in the eyes of the researchers, so they went out to research an ancient Asian practices and found something that has worked for many hundreds of years.

This Old Technique Can Be Used to Treat Vertigo

A study performed by Taiwanese researchers suggested that a big part of people who visited the emergency department did so with dizziness or vertigo. Often with broken limbs after suffering a fall.

To treat vertigo, people are usually told to take vestibular suppressants or other drugs and sent home to cope with it on their own.

This seemed quite a cruel way to treat vertigo in the eyes of the researchers, so they went out to research an ancient Asian practices and found something that has worked for many hundreds of years.

The best part about this method to treat vertigo, is that you can access this Asian practice, no matter where in the world you live.

The authors of the Taiwanese study asked people who visited the hospital with dizziness to participate test the effectiveness and safety of acupuncture as a remedy.

They split them into two groups, one that received real acupuncture, and one that received a fake acupuncture treatment where the needles were inserted a centimeter or two from the real acupoints.

An otolaryngologist or neurologist verified that they all suffered from dizziness or a variety of causes of vertigo like vertebrobasilar artery syndrome and Ménière’s disease.

At the beginning, the scientists asked them to complete a questionnaire to record their level of functioning and their limitations when tackling specific activities. This was their baseline score before the treatment.

They then applied the real and fake treatments, and gave them two more questionnaires to complete twice afterwards: the first time 30 minutes after the treatment, and the second time seven days later.

The real acupuncture treatment group gave better scores than the fake treatment group both 30 minutes and seven days after the treatments.

The study indicated acupuncture was safe and that it worked for a variety of people who suffered from different types of vertigo. Many treatments often work for only one type, so that is a big potential advantage of acupuncture.

The Deadly Effects of Vertigo (must read)

There are many different underlying causes of vertigo, but it now seems like one of the most serious of these is so brief that many people don’t take it particularly seriously, especially the effects of vertigo to their daily lives.

The effects of vertigo may last for only a second or two in most cases and people tend to ignore it and pass it off as normal.

It is related to the extreme dizziness that some people feel when they stand up after sitting or lying down.

When you stand up from sitting or lying down, your body needs to increase your blood pressure for a moment to ensure that enough blood reaches your brain against the gravity you have suddenly imposed on it.

But sometimes something goes wrong and extreme dizziness happens.

This condition is called orthostatic hypotension. It happens because their blood pressure drops by at least 20 mmHg systolic points or 10 mmHg diastolic points.

But if the blood vessels in your lower body do not constrict fast enough to increase your blood pressure for that moment, the blood cannot leave your lower body fast enough to go back up to your heart.

This means that there isn’t enough blood available for your heart to pump up to your brain, and your brain starts to cut out until enough blood arrives.

But scientists now suggest that middle-aged people who suffer from this condition may be at higher risk of dementia as they age. This study was published in the journal Circulation.

The scientists analyzed information collected by the Atherosclerosis Risk in Communities population-based study, involving 11,503 participants between 45 and 64 who had no history of coronary artery disease or stroke.

These participants were visited for the first time in 1987 and then observed for the following 20 years.

Researchers measured participant blood pressure when they got up after lying down for 20 minutes.

Scientists discovered that those who met the requirements for orthostatic hypotension were 40% more likely than the others to develop dementia, and had 15% more cognitive decline than the others had.

So what can you do to prevent bad events and deadly consequences of orthostatic hypotension?

To overcome the effects of vertigo, drink enough water to ensure that you have enough blood circulation through your body to maintain a healthy blood pressure. Avoid diuretics like blood pressure medications, excessive caffeine, and alcohol.

Some medications like antidepressants and alpha-1 blockers can also cause it.

The Simplest Way to Heal Vertigo Finally Discovered

Italian researchers recently discovered a simple procedure that cures 85% of people from “incurable” Ménière’s disease that can also cure vertigo.

This is a disease of the inner ear that causes extreme vertigo, tinnitus, hearing loss, and a feeling of fullness in the ear.

As anyone with this condition can testify, it is severely disabling, especially in cases where attacks occur frequently.

And till now, the traditional medical system claims there is no cure for it.

Italian research into vertigo indicates Ménière’s disease is caused by the blocking of the azygos and/or internal jugular veins that lead away from your inner ear.

These veins are supposed to remove fluid from your inner ear.

If they are blocked and cannot do this, fluid builds up inside your inner ear, and that is what is called Ménière’s disease.

By now medical scientists know what to do with blocked arteries or veins. They carry out a procedure called an angioplasty during which they attach a deflated balloon to a catheter, put the catheter into the blocked vessel, and inflate the balloon to force the vessel open.

Researchers in a recent study identified 182 patients who had been diagnosed with Ménière’s disease, resistant to all known treatment and management procedures.

They performed ultrasound and MR imaging on them to confirm that either the azygos or the internal jugular vein was blocked.

Of those. 87% tested positive for these blocked veins, while only 12% of healthy patients did. Proving that this is the cause of Ménière’s.

They then performed the angioplasty procedure on all the Ménière’s patients who agreed to it.

After a two-year follow-up period, an average of 80 percent of them experienced major improvements of some of their symptoms.

85 percent reported an improvement of their vertigo, 70 percent said that the feeling of fullness in their ears declined, 50 percent reported an improvement in their hearing, and 35 percent reported a reduction of tinnitus.

If this is correct, it shows freeing up blood vessels leading to the brain is critical.

Get Rid of Vertigo and Dizziness Over the Internet

Vertigo and dizziness often goes undiagnosed and untreated for years, even decades.

But a new study from the University of Southampton reveals a simple, easy way to get rid of vertigo and dizziness over the Internet.

Participants in this study experienced great relief from their condition without having to leave their home.

Vestibular rehabilitation has been proven an effective way to get rid of vertigo and dizziness

Vestibular rehabilitation is a set of exercises or head movements that helps your central nervous system and brain compensate for the dizziness.

Traditionally, these exercises are performed at a doctor’s or physical therapist’s office. But the researchers wondered if the same results could be gained doing the therapy over the Internet.

296 Vertigo sufferers from 54 primary care practices in southern England were divided into two groups: one that received the online program, and the other that received the normal care available from the British National Health Service. The average age of the participants was 67.

They were asked to complete the Vertigo Symptom Scale Short Form at the beginning, at three months, and again at six months.

The online program significantly reduced the symptoms of dizziness and dizziness-related disability after both three and six months.

The Internet is a fantastic pathway to work on yourself. We’ve helped thousands of vertigo sufferers completely get rid of vertigo and dizziness over the Internet using a simple set of head-balance exercises.

Our exercises differ from the Vestibular rehabilitation exercises used in the study and seem to deliver even better results. Especially since they work for all types of vertigo and dizziness.

What is the Best Way to Prevent Vertigo Patients from Falling?

Computer Protects Vertigo Patients from Falling

Vertigo places vertigo patients at an extreme risk of bad falls.

Researchers from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill and North Carolina State University have now discovered a way to prevent falls in people suffering vertigo and dizziness.

And the cure lies in watching a video on a computer screen, like the one you’re reading now.

They published their method in Nature Scientific Reports.

The researchers made their volunteers walk on a treadmill while facing a curved screen that displayed a moving hallway.

To trick their participant’s brains into believing they were extremely dizzy and/or falling, the scientists added side-to-side movements to the footage on the screen.

This is a clever trick because, while your brain knows you are not falling when placed in this situation, the visuals will make you feel like you are losing your balance and your brain will try to compensate for what you see and feel.

This is where the experiment becomes quite ingenious.

Through 14 cameras placed around their subject’s bodies and electrodes attached to their skins, they recorded how these desperately dizzy walkers altered their walking strides and body postures to stay safely upright.

The details of how each individual person compensates for a loss of balance is valuable, as it can be used to train them to do all this better in situations where their balance is even worse than in this virtual reality setting.

This is where this study is useful for the prevention of falls in people with vertigo.

Training vertigo patients to walk while they feel dizzy cannot take away their vertigo, but it can help them stay upright while they feel like they are spinning.

In the virtual reality study, people’s walking varied a lot more between short and long steps instead of taking steps of approximately the same length as usual.

Vertigo patients also used their core muscle to sway their bodies back and forth while they were walking, instead of holding their bodies more or less still like we usually do.

Their muscles synchronized perfectly with each other to find a coordinated physical response to the dizziness.
