For this reason, a research team decided to examine the effect that the oral contraceptive pill has on women’s risk for this painful, inflammatory joint disease.

They asked volunteers in the Swedish Epidemiological Investigation of RA study to complete a questionnaire on their oral contraceptive use, breastfeeding, smoking, alcohol consumption, and other factors that could influence the results.

When they compared 2,641 arthritic women with 4,251 non-arthritic women, they found that women who had used the contraceptive pill were 15% less likely than never-users to develop rheumatoid arthritis.

This was after they excluded smoking, alcohol use, and other habits known to be contributing factors in the development of this disease.

However, the pill does come with side effects and it does not cure arthritis once it has set in, so researchers warned not to start using it just to manage arthritis.

You read that right. It’s a household cleaner—not some overpriced drug with an unpronounceable, invented name.

Actually, this household cleaner is so effective that it scared the pants off the pharmaceutical industry.

Boron (found in borax) is a naturally occurring element extracted from dried salt lakes. Normally, a healthful diet with unprocessed and organically grown fruits and vegetables provides about 2 to 5 mg of boron per day.

However, harsh soil fertilizers and unhealthful cooking methods greatly reduce the intake of boron from food.

Nowadays, due to the increase of chemical soil fertilizers and processed food, our boron intake has greatly reduced over the past century. And this trend has led to a significant uptick in diseases related to joint inflammation, such as arthritis.

In 1960, Australian plant and soil scientist Rex Newnham was diagnosed with arthritis. He tried to cure the ailment with all kinds of treatments that conventional medicine at the time could offer.

Unfortunately, nothing worked, and his arthritis only progressed.

He decided to look for an answer in plants and discovered that the soil in the area were plants were grown was rather mineral deficient.

Later, a double-blind trial in Royal Melbourne Hospital revealed that patients supplemented with borax had 70% improvement in their arthritis symptoms, compared to 12% in the placebo group.

There is obviously a direct correlation between low boron levels and arthritis. For example, Jamaica has extremely low soil boron levels, and Jamaicans’ arthritis rates are 70% higher than those in Israel, where estimated daily boron intake is 5 to 8 mg and arthritis is found in only 0.5–1% of the population.

Bone examination revealed that arthritis-affected joints had only half the boron content of healthy joints.

The synovial fluid that helps carry nutrients to the cartilage and lubricates joints was found to be boron deficient in arthritic joints.

According to Newnham, supplementing with borax can eliminate pain, inflammation, and joint stiffness in about 1 to 3 months.

After 3 months, he suggests reducing the treatment from 3 daily pills to 1 pill a day (each containing 3 mg of borax) as a preventative measure to avoid future arthritis.

Borax is usually sold as agricultural or technical grade at a 99–99.5% pure concentration. The remaining 0.5 % might consist of potassium, sodium, chloride, sulfates, phosphates, calcium, carbonate, and bicarbonate but no toxic or heavy metals.

Sugar and refined carbohydrates – Avoid the consumption of sugary products and those made of refined or processed white flour. These products usually lack nutrition and even worse may contain AGEs that cause inflammation and pain. Sugar is the #1 fuel for inflammation. Say no also to sodas, candies, and baked goods made of white flour.

Dairy products – While it is not harmful for all arthritis patients, some proteins in dairy products can irritate the tissue around joints. A vegan diet may be suitable for these patients, and the protein can be derived from legumes, vegetables, nut butter, beans and tofu.

Alternative Arthritis Treatment – Deadly Animal Eases Arthritis Pain

The British Daily Express recently interviewed a Cuban man who routinely used scorpion venom to ease his terrible arthritis pain.

He keeps four scorpions around his house so that he could “sting himself” when his arthritis pain became bad, apparently about once a month.

So is there science to back this up?

Apparently, there is. And fortunately, you don’t have to suffer the sting of a scorpion to benefit from this method.

In 2009, The Iranian journal Archives of Razi Institute published a paper by Iranian researchers that tested the venom of the Mesobuthus eupeus, commonly called the lesser Asian scorpion, found, fittingly, primarily in Asia.

They injected rats with a substance that caused a rheumatoid arthritis-like condition.

They then injected one group of these rats with conventional anti-arthritis medication, two groups with scorpion venom of different strengths, and one group remained untreated.

They found that the venom-injected rats experienced as much improvement in movement and reduction in inflammation as those injected with the arthritis drug.

The Journal of Clinical Toxicology published a similar study in 2014 in which Indian scientists tested the venom of the Indian red scorpion, one of the most lethal scorpions in the world, on similarly induced rat arthritis with similar results.

At this stage, these are the only two studies that back the use of scorpion venom.

At the same time, there are plenty of other studies proving that scorpion venom actually causes inflammation and death.

So why are the results so conflicting?

You see, scorpion venom has so many different chemicals in it and different types have different amounts of each chemical.

Therefore, the only way to get reliable results from scorpion venom will be when scientists manage to extract the good, anti-inflammatory parts from the bad inflammatory-inducing part.

A research study conducted by a team from Peking Union Medical College Hospital in China has found promising results with a traditional Chinese herb called Tripterygium wilfordii. The herb is more commonly referred to as ‘thunder god vine’ and has been used for different medicinal uses for many centuries.

In a trial, 207 patients were assigned to one of three groups; the first group received 12.5 mg of prescription drug, methotrexate once a week, the second group received 20 mg of the herb extract and the third group received a combination of both. The patients were tracked for a period of 24 weeks. They were then assessed to check if at least 50 percent reduction in pain and swelling of joints was achieved.

55.1 percent of the patients who took the herb extract and 76.8 percent of those who took a combination of drug and the herb extract showed more than 50% improvement in inflammation. Compare this to only 46.4 percent who got relief from taking only the drug.

The side effects related to the herb extract was also found to be minimal. This inexpensive Chinese herb seems like a potential candidate for treating rheumatoid arthritis safely. Many doctors in China actually recommend this herb extract, available as capsules, for patients older than 50 years.

Apart from its effect on arthritis, the herb is also known to cure pancreatic cancer and other autoimmune diseases. It is, however, believed to lower fertility in men.
